Epic view of the point break, decent food, was better than other options in the area we experienced, nice staff, great margaritas, we will definitely come back again next time we visit Santa Catalina.

This was our first visit to Panama and were looking for reasonable accommodation at a good scuba diving location. Hotel Santa Catalina was perfect for our 11 day stay - on the coast (not beach), great view, close to a number of restaurants, and very quiet.

Hotel room was spacious, with room cleaning on request (no pesky knocks on the door), porch, hammock chairs - everything needed for a relaxing afternoon. More importantly A/C, fridge, coffee maker, microwave all worked. Bed very comfortable. Good value for the price.

Couple of things could be improved. I was there to scuba dive (early start) so no breakfast or coffee on dive days. Supper and lunch menu never changed and the quality of the meals could be improved. However, good restaurants nearby so no big deal. Favorite itinerary - 3 tank dive, beer at Surfer’s Paradise to watch sunset and margaritas and Nachos at Mama Ines overlooking the beach.

Santa Catalina is kind of an undiscovered gem, a very small town about five hours driving from Panama City, is an amazing surfing spot with beautiful beaches and the sailing point to discover the nature wonder of Coiba National Park. Hotel Santa Catalina is probably the most complete hotel in town, rooms are big and comfortable, they've ac, hot water, tv, wifi, hammock, parking, on site restaurant and an infinite pool! Staff are very helpful specially if you're visiting Santa Catalina for the first time. Room rates includes a very good breakfast, El Estero beach is only 800m walking distance.

I and a friend spent 4 nights here in February 2020. Santa Catalina is way off the beaten path and Hotel Santa Catalina is a beacon of comfort in a very laid back surfer community. Awesome location between the two major sandy beaches. Both of which are easy walking distance. The pool and pina coladas at sunset were awesome. The hotel restaurant, Pescado, was very good but a little inconsistent. Also there are other good restaurants within easy walking distance. The staff was very helpful even thought some struggled with English and my poor Spanish. The room we had was very comfortable. No major negative comments. Highly recommend.

We stayed as a family of 5, 3 teenage boys.
I booked direct via email which was very easy.
The hotel is a short way out of town by car and has a large plot with attractive looking rows of rooms (white with terracotta roofs).
We had a huge open plan room with a single bed and a king sized double bed below and on the mezzanine level another single and a normal double. It’s all pine clad so you feel like you’re in a ski chalet. It’s a little dark even with all the lights on. However the fan and AC worked well, although the mezzanine was always a little bit warmer.
It’s rather hard to cook in the small kitchen space but was fine to prepare breakfast. There was no salt pepper etc. It had a cleaning cream block but no washing up liquid. It did however have a huge fridge. I recommend you do a supermarket shop before you get to Santa Catalina, as the shops are small and expensive and bring condiments and coffee/tea/salt pepper etc.
The gardens are well kept. At the end of the plot is a swing, the restaurant and bar and then beyond that the lovely pool.
It’s all very nicely done.
The beach beyond is not one you’d sit on as at high tide there is very little beach and at low tide it is covered in rocks and trees. Apparently you can surf directly off the beach but this is only recommended for very good surfers. The boys cycled down to the other local beach, the bikes aren’t exactly road worthy but did the job. My husband and I drove the boards down. The boards are free to use. They also have SUP and kayaks but due to the surf you are unlikely to use them on the beach in front of the hotel and would need to take them to one of the other beaches by car.
The hotel restaurant does amazing cocktails (get the passion fruit margarita) and drinks aren’t too expensive. The food was a bit below par (see other review).
I did a yoga class $18, which was fantastic. It’s on an outside yoga podium and they provide mats. They do yoga retreats here.
They are also very helpful when you leave items in arranging for them to be sent on. We left my sons phone and they delivered it to our hotel in Panama city which was lifesaver.
It’s a lovely hotel with lovely views.

Sitting sadly in Miami following a wonderful stay at Hotel Santa Catalina in Panama. The hotel will always hold a special place in our hearts because the staff are so welcoming and warm. And the restaurant fed us well....we tried everything on the menu!! Our room was cool and spacious giving enough room for my husband to spread out all his diving and fishing gear without getting in my way. Safety is definitely not an issue just don’t be stupid!!

The only issue, even if you could call it one was the number of small children around. Had my grandkids been with me I would probably feel differently. 😉

The swimming pool looks out over the ocean and everyday around 1:00 PM the surfers would paddle out and surf the afternoon away. I very much enjoyed watching them.

So yes! I highly recommend Hotel Santa Catalina especially if you love diving and surfing.

Just one more thing......From the airport it will take you between 7-8 hours to drive to Hotel Santa Catalina. Personally, I recommend renting a car (Big and beefy) so you are able to take side trips along the back roads. Santiago, a town along the way can be rather interesting to navigate and be sure to fill up in Soná before getting to the town of Santa Catalina😉

We had an amazing time during our stay at the Hotel Santa Catalina. The rooms were always clean and the a/c was nice to escape to. The food was great every single day – and so were the cocktails! The staff knew us by the first day and simply confirmed our room number for charges. Could not have been easier for us! The area is a must see, just so beautiful! The waves were great everyday – right around head high each day. The reef break is good for intermediate and above and the nearby beach break was great for our ladies! All of us got some of their best waves of our lives. Kenny and Ileana were super cool and treated everybody like family. Sacrificing one day of surfing for the chance to see Coiba Island was so worth it! The folks at Unlimited Adventures Cobia were great – from the booking to the loading of the boat to the simply unbelievable beauty of Coiba and the cleaning of our fish! Two dorado, thank you very much! Oh – our quote of the trip – “look, a shark, jump in!” We did… (mellow reef sharks, ha ha)

I stayed in Hotel Santa Catalina on May 2022. My first impression of Hotel Santa Catalina was "this doesn't look like a hotel - more like a private property", I was wrong. My partner and I did not have a reservation and just asked the reception office if there is room available for one night. We got lucky and checked in. The hotel has its own restaurant called Pescao, yoga, equipment rentals, and access to the surf side. The food served in Pescao were delicious and reasonably priced. The hotel and Pescao staffs were friendly and helpful. My likes: swimming pool by Pescao, access to the (shores) surf side, fresh ingredients, overall price rate, quiet setting, pool table in Pescao, and the staff. My thumb downs: (1) small parking space and (2) unmaintained access road to the hotel. Tips: (1) room tabs are available, so don't bring money or debit/credit cards to Pescao, (2) try Pescao daily specials, (3) take advantage of the relaxing yoga, and (4) relax and take a walk by the rocky shores.

We came here to snorkel at Isla Coiba. This is a small, basic hotel although the room was large and it did have a small pool. And a restaurant, Pescao, where the food was surprisingly good. There was a fridge and sink, a small front porch with 2 chairs on it.

Santa Catalina is a very very small place, where people go to dive or snorkel at Isla Coiba; lots of hostels and small eateries. This hotel is a better choice (we are over 60) although fairly basic. They did our laundry (and expedited it as we were only staying 2 nights) which was very nice

The restaurant food was surprisingly very very good and fresh. I had a lobster which was huge with a sauce on it. Breakfast was good too.

good morning a warm greeting and apologies for the delay and answer, and prsonamete uilize the kayaks to go to the island the average time to go is 30 minutes the return is a bit more difficult so you will find the current and the wind may take approximately 1 hour. If you know that the hotel rate includes the use of kayaks, we have kayaks for 2 people and individuals.

Hi Jgarey! They seem to be very pet friendly. At the hotel they have a few dogs and cats walking free... I'm just not sure if they allow guests dogs in... Its worth to check it out. Hope you a nice and safe trip! If you dive, you must visit Coiba! Amazing! At Santa Catalina, also search for the El Encuentro restaurant! The best ceviche ever!
