Detailed Reviews
All options in Owaka were full and we were advised to check out Pounawea, delighted we did. A very pleasant small motel right on the water's edge, the setting could not be better. The room was fine, well appointed, clean and modern. Nice bathroom. The lady proprietor was helpful and friendly recommending a walk on Surat Bay (the beaches on the Catlins are amazing) and that you book for a meal in Owaka.
Pounawea is charming, very pretty and quiet. Recommend you stay here rather than Owaka, which in any event is only 5 mins drive. Bonus sea lion viewing in the morning!

Manager/owner was really helpful on the phone prior to our arrival with advice re dining options and leaving the unit ready for our late arrival. The unit was spotless and all we needed for a one night stay - not the biggest rooms but that didn't worry us. The beds were very comfortable. The estuary across the road is an awesome place to watch the sunrise! Only downside was that despite using the extractor fan, the bathroom got very damp. We were very pleased we stayed here and not another motel that as the same price but looked cold and old!

We only stayed one night, but had a great stay. The loud "doorbell" (two noisy dogs) met us at reception. Our host was very friendly and helpful. She recommended a couple of tourist attractions. We followed her advice and were rewarded.
The surrounding area is good for walking and the rooms very nice.

Great place to relax and enjoy sunsets and sunrises over the water in a quiet setting. The unit provided all necessities with a comfortable bed. Will definitely be back. The photos on their website show it well.

I don't quite know what I was expecting yet despite the fact that this motel is spotlessly clean and is near the water, it totally lacks character. The 4 units are built in a row at right angles to the magnificent ocean view so that when you look from your windows you simply see the houses on the other side of the road. Being in the wilderness of the beautiful Catlins we were expecting something more creatively situated and larger. The room we stayed in was possibly the smallest we experienced during our 2 week journey through South Island. We self catered and were disappointed that the kitchen has no exhaust fan and that carpet continues through the unit, right up to the sink, fridge and stove - made us really nervous about spillages and spatters. Full marks to the bed - it was really comfortable, but overall this accommodation fell short of what we'd come to expect from other great experiences.

We were unfortunate in that we hit cold, blustery weather during our trip to the Catlins but that’s just the luck of the draw. Still, it was a bit of a surprise to arrive at Pounawea Grove Motel to find a note taped to the door telling us which room was ours and to go ahead and move in … which we did. The room was lovely, a little on the small side but new and very functional. What was surprising to me is that first of all, the managers never came by later on to say hello and second, that the room wasn’t serviced. We came back on the second day to find that the bed wasn’t made, the towels not changed etc and maybe we were supposed to do it ourselves, but there was no mention of that in our booking or on their website. That was somewhat annoying, but still the motel is very new and clean, and well situated being a few steps from the water and easy day-tripping distance from the major sights in the Catlins.

The location of this Motel is simply perfect. It isn't possible to find a more idyllic spot - right on the water's edge. I stayed here for three nights in January 2012. I was with my partner and two very close friends.
On arrival the managers were out, but very clear instructions were left for us. We were able to access our rooms but the guest lounge was locked - a pity as it overlooks the water and would have been a perfect spot to recover after our journey. The rooms are spotlessly clean but unfortunately lack some basics. Our room had no chairs or table (however small) to put 'stuff' on. A rack was provided to hang clothing but no storage for other clothes. The large bathroom had an excellent shower. The mini kitchen had all the basics needed for minimal self catering and the quality of the utensils, etc. was good. It was unseasonally cold for Summer and so was the room. No extra blankets were available (or pillows) and the room had no means of heating. A double size electric blanket was found in the drawer - no use as the room had two single beds. The next day an electric heater was immediately provided. The Guest Lounge was open for the remainder of our stay. It had a heat pump but the manager took the control away when she left for her private area - after turning it off! The very pleasant couple running the motel had a very young baby and I got the feeling that guests, although looked after were not the focus of their day. Free wireless internet was available - fast and reliable. Surprisingly the rooms were not serviced at all throughout our stay, although fresh towels were offered on the second day. With a little more thought and more attention to detail this motel could be 5 stars - but it needs to get the basics right. Would I recommend it? Yes, I would for its location and stunning views. Just make sure you ask for the things you need to make the stay enjoyable.

This is a great place to stay if you would like to visit this remote and beautiful part of New Zealand. It is close to a stunning wild beach environment with seal lions and seals on the beach and in the water. Beautiful beach walks to be enjoyed. The owner is extremely helpful and friendly. The room was very comfortable.

We were traveling through the Catlins on the way from Fiordland to Dunedin and needed a place to stay. We found Pounawea Grove Motel and were so glad we did. The room was gorgeous, with great decorating. The common room had a great view of the water. We enjoyed sitting there after dinner, watching the waves. This is definitely a great find.

Pounawea grove motel is located in a beautiful spot. The motel seems fairly new. The rooms are very comfortable, well decorated and well set out (the rooms are small but we didn't need any more room). The kitchen had everything we needed. The staff were lovely. Definitely recommend and will stay here again.
