Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed in the furthest of four cottages along a little rural lane way. The whole front wall is a window looking out over fields of sheep and tree covered hills - utterly private and beautiful, accompanied by lovely Birdsong. The unit is equipped with everything we could need, including good Wi-Fi. Highly recommended.

Beautiful cottage, stunning views, comfy bed and relaxing spa. Don't have a bad thing to say about Mohua, the hosts were lovely and easy to talk to. If you want to immerse yourself in nature and take in the catlins then this is the place for you. Highly recommend will definitely be back if we are down in The Catlins again.

The Mohua Park eco-sanctuary is a must-do if you are in the Catlins. It is in a great location not far off the scenic drive that connects all of Catlins main destinations, and not far from Owaka, the nearest town. The accomodation is top notch with a great bathroom, kitchen and living space. We visited in autumn and despite the cool nights we were very cosy. Wifi was excellent and beds very comfy. We loved the views out onto the farmland and the forest backdrop. It is a very peaceful spot with only the noise of the odd cow, sheep or native bird to break the silence. The walking tracks around the property are great and offer a little bit more adventure if you didn't get enough during the day exploring the wider Catlins area. In 2 days we got as far as Curio Bay to the west and Nugget Point Lighthouse to the east. Hosts were very friendly, including Gus the resident farm dog. Will be back.

We spent a few nights in one of the cottages that overlooks sheep paddocks and native vegetation in the hills across the valley. The setting was absolutely bucolic and the services at the cottage were great. Dinner ingredients were left in the fridge of our kichenette and every effort was made to accommodate my husband’s dietary requirements. We only wish we could have stayed there longer to enjoy the walks on all the nearby tracks! A real find!

My wife and I took a self drive touring holiday on South Island New Zealand from the 17th March to the 11th April 2023. Apart from the first 2 nights and the last night where we stayed in a hotel in Christchurch we were self catering and stayed in accommodation that offered cooking facilities. I have reviewed each of the hotel/motels we stayed in. The following reviews cover the accommodation and some of the facilities/visits we made on the trip. If you would like to view the rest of the reviews please click on my username and all my reviews will be listed. Days 6 to 8 of our self drive tour of South Island March/April 2023 Mohua Park, Catlins. 4 stars We stayed in The Kahu Cottage 20th to 23rd March. Welcome. We were welcomed by the owner when we arrived, but this was the first place where we did not receive a bottle of milk on arrival. The owner was friendly and provided some information about the area. However, when I went to pay I was taken aback when the owner informed me that they had already taken payment from my credit card. When I checked my account I found the payment had been taken ten days previously on the 10th March. When I booked online, the previous September 2022, I input my credit card details, which is standard and I read the terms and conditions which stated that “all accounts are payable on arrival”. I note that it also said “All reservations require a current valid Credit Card for authorisation, we reserve the right to pre-authorise or do the necessary checks on the Card given. All Credit Cards will incur a 3% surcharge. Payment upon confirmation of booking” I suggest that anyone booking reads the terms and conditions in full. This was quite different to many of the other properties we stayed in where we were required to pay on arrival. Service. The owner informed us that the unit would not be serviced and would normally only be serviced on the fifth day of occupation. Location. Mohua Park is located on a rough un-surfaced road with loose gravel 7km from a surfaced road. This could be an insurance issue with hire cars. On the first night we stayed there was a lot of rain and wind overnight and when we set out to drive to Owaka the next morning we found a lot of water on the un-surfaced road and it seemed quite slippery. We were thankful that we had rented a 4 wheel drive SUV. Comfort. The unit was separate from any other units anf so there was no disturbance from other persons being nerby. The room was a very good size with a large and comfortable bed, a sofa and easy chairs, a table and chairs. The view from the room was very good with a hillside opposite and fields with lots of sheep roaming around. There was a balcony with a gas barbeque, a table and a sofa. The kitchenette area was quite cramped compared to other places we had stayed in. There was a fridge, microwave, kettle, coffee maker and a ceramic hotplate together with some cooking utensils. The bathroom had been kitted out as a facility for disabled or handicapped clients and was a “wet room”. The problem we found was that as it was a wet room, once the shower had been used most of the floor was damp for a long time and the towels did not dry. Apparently Mohua Park does not have any mains water and all water, including drinking water, is treated rainwater. Consequently, the shower was very weak. Cleanliness. The unit and the bedding were very clean. There is a lobby and a notice asking clients to remove their shoes which resulted in the carpet being quite clean. WiFi. There was a router in the room and the signal strength was excellent. I was able to download and stream UK TV programmes with ease. Conclusion. Although the room and the view from the room was nice and it was clean. The early charging of my credit card (10 days before arrival) the access road and wet room disappointed us and we would not return here again.

The best « motel » I’ve ever stayed in yet in NZ. I only met Tracy, upon arrival and before departure. She couldn’t have been more friendlier, helpful and fun to talk to. Besides the great welcome, the cottage I stayed in had an extraordinary view. The access is on a gravel road of roughly 7 km. Driving at night will allow you to maybe see some wildlife. The only regret I have is the weather, as it was mostly cloudy and could not see the stars at night, but obviously, I cannot blame the owner for that. 🤣 I actually loved the fact that there was no tv. It’s definitely a « must do ». David

It was so lovely having you to stay with us David, enjoyed our chats and also love the fact that you appreciated the cottage and the amazing views. We've actually had guests who've encountered deer grazing on the side of the road on the way to our property which is extra special! Enjoy the rest of your travels in NZ and come back and see us again some time😊

I spent a night here with my parents just after Boxing Day. Driving in it feels like yo ugh are driving towards Milford sound with the orange bark on the trees and the tree canopy’s that meet, we stayed in Karearea cottage, comfortable, nice layout, overlooks farmland with sheep, very kiwi, very serene, nice little bbq to cook on, all eco products provided, as it is an eco destination no heated towel rails but there were electric blankets, a heat pump in the room and a heater in the bathroom. The only things we found to need improvement was that sofa in this unit has seen better days and unfortunately when you sit down you feel the spine of the sofa as the cushion is worn and the picture frames in the wall of the main bed are hung very low as are the fixed reading lights, as there is no headboard - if you choose to read in bed then your head is on the picture frame and the low fixed reading lights mean that heat and bright light are at your temples. There is no television however lots of board games are provided, there is reliable wifi so bring your laptop for movie night. We did not feel one night here was enough to properly explore and appreciate the grounds and walking tracks. We really liked how homely the units were whilst also being modern and clean. Our cottage had room to sleep 4. A main king bed then a small part wall had two single beds top to tail, a really clever configuration for people travelling together. We would definitely stay again.
