It is difficult to express what a wonderful place Split Apple Retreat is. The warmth from everyone working, an immaculate beautifully decorated room, a stunning view and a superb chef! The bottom line is that we enjoy and love so much the place that we are already planning our fourth return! The place is as close to "paradise" as possible....

It was a bit serendipitous that we ended up at this wonderful retreat/hotel/resort as we ended up in the Nelson area after traveling around New Zealand for two weeks and just wanted to relax. Chatting with Lee on the phone and then meeting him was an instant bond as we are from the Bay area where he once worked. Pen is delightful and her food is wonderful and their story is so touching and caring. Meeting them and sharing their home/vision and and wellness life focus has made a difference in our life. There are only three luxurious rooms and the whole experience had a Zen feel as Lee has collected magnificent Japanese art and you take off your shoes when you enter their home/retreat. We went there to enjoy the pool, view and beach and did enjoy all of these experiences, but the highlight was meeting Lee and Pen and getting their overview of life philosophy. Leaving with their "Thoughtful Food Cookbook was an extra bonus and I have already tried a couple of recipes. We are very thankful for the experience and highly recommend the resort and wellness center.

If you want a truly relaxing, de-stress break then this is the place to come!
From the moment you arrive you will feel at home. The beautiful house is zen itself, set in lush gardens with gorgeous views over the Able Tasman, a pool and aJapanese hot tub to immerse in.
Your room also overlooks the sea and gardens and is well appointed with quality homewares and little extras to pamper you.
Then there is the food.... Pen cooks the most delicious meals, breakfast, packed lunches and dinners. All created with loving care that makes eating healthy food a delicious culinary treat. You won’t realise you’re even eating healthily as it tastes too good.
Then there’s the massage & meditation options on offer. You don’t have to do any but then again you could try a few or all of them and be surprised by the out come, you never know it could change your life....
Whatever you want, if you ask you can pretty much have as well as some you’ve never heard of.

With Pen & Lee as your wonderful hosts your whole stay is an experience that is sure to leave you relaxed and revitalised.

This is the first hotel or restaurant review I have written.
However my stay with my wife at The Split Apple Retreat merits public acclaim.
On arrival a short tour with owner Lee confirms that this home, decoration and layout are of the highest order... to be expected ( perhaps) at the price.
More importantly though our 3 day stay
evidenced 3 outstanding characteristics of this very special establishment:
1)The finest of healthy food, produced by Co owner Pen, I have ever had in over over 50 years of eating around the world; and for 35 of those years I owned and ran an international food company.
2)Breathtaking views from every room,
3)The friendliest and warmest of attention to detail and service.

The combination of all 3 is unique.

We can’t wait to go back.

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights during our honeymoon drive around New Zealand and it was certainly an unforgettable 2 nights (especially after staying in a campervan for 2 weeks). From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, we felt relaxed, welcome and simply amazing. Everything the retreat offers, is to the highest standards and catered around you. Chef Pen’s food is just phenomenal and she touchingly gifted us her cookbook, Lees wine selection was marvellous and JJ and the rest of the team were unbelievably hospitable. We have been to many amazing places in the world but Split Apple is one we won’t forget! We will certainly be back! Kealy & Kirsty

We stayed for five very special nights. It was all we thought it would be and then some. The rooms are luxurious spacious and filled with original art works. Waking up to a view across The Abel Tasman National Park was a revelation each day and the evening sky equally magical. You can have absolute privacy if you choose or join other guests at breakfast and dinner which is always a gastronomical delight. Pen is extraordinary at creating delicious food that is sourced locally and super fresh each day. The wine cellar is filled with a comprehensive selection of exceptional wines. Pens staff are attentive to your every need and requirement and all will quickly become your new BFFs. we felt so welcome and at home loved the meditations infinity pool and private beach, private access to Split Apple beach was also a well kept secret that all guests get to find out about. Don't delay in making a booking to stay at the retreat you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. We most certainly will return.

From the moment we arrived, everything was wonderful. We were greeted and welcomed by Jj and immediately felt at home. Lee gave us a tour of the house and told us about some of the gorgeous Asian antiques and art that were in every room. When we were taken to our luxurious room, our luggage had already been brought in and there were lots of little amenities to make our stay even more lovely. We had two private garden retreats outside our door and a spectacular view of the ocean, mountains and the Abel Tasman National Park. In the mornings we meditated in the very comfortable meditation room and started our days very expanded and relaxed. Breakfast was extravagant and delicious. The buckwheat pancakes are a must! Dinners were beautiful, delicious, healthy and Chef Pen is an magician with flavours. Every course made me swoon with delight. I had a massage session that was one of the best I’ve ever had. The staff were all delightful and the service was impeccable. They anticipated every need or desire we had. The garden areas were lovely to explore and sit in. The sal water infinity pool and the Japanese hot tub were wonderful. I could go on and on raving about the Split Apple Retreat. My only suggestion is that you book for more days than you think you want. They still won’t be enough!
Thank you Lee, Pen, Jj, Paige and the entire staff!

From the moment you close the car door on arrival and immediately greeted with birdsong, an original Kyoto temple gate and lush, Japanese-inspired entrance garden, you know you have just left the dusty world of busyness on the road and entered a very special sanctuary. Seeking a true and literal ‘retreat’, this 4D3N experience reached and exceeded every expectation I had. Having had the privilege of visiting many 5 star establishments around the world, I’ve never come across one with the combination of otherworldly views, sublimely delicious meals, a historical art collection worthy of museum standards and warm, sincere and attentive service.

Pen, Lee and JJ were the most gracious of hosts and made sure every need was attended to (before even asking). Much has been said about the stunning food here created by Pen, which is every bit phenomenal as the breathtaking creation of nature you face when you eat, but coupled with its artistic, architectural, holistic surroundings, this is an inspiring sanctuary like no other.

If you are a fatigued soul in need of true rest, a seeker of inspiration or just someone who appreciates true all round excellence, you won’t find anywhere better than a stay here. And that’s coming from a local!

Split Apple Retreat is the most exceptional lodging we've ever had the pleasure of staying at. It's not just an ultra luxury boutique retreat; you are welcomed and pampered by Lee and his wife, Pen, like family. Each of Pen's gourmet dishes that she personally and meticulously prepared was not only nourishing, but a work of art. Each day was so fulfilling and interesting. We cycled in bucolic countryside, hiked from a secluded beach past a family of native Weka birds, to a cascading waterfall, learned mediation in a way that was gentle, yet transformative and profound. All we can talk about is when and how soon we can return.

Split Apple Retreat can only be described as a beautiful holistic experience that delivers on every front. Seeped in beauty and tranquillity, each and every sense was stimulated. Pen, Lee and Jj are wonderful hosts and made us feel part of the community that is split apple as soon as we arrived. Our room was luxurious and well appointed. We enjoyed the private deck which was surrounded by bush and seascape, perfect for relaxation and contemplation.
The food was outstanding, Pen is an inspired chef, there is love in all her food which is expressed in the flavour and in the sense of pleasure and wellness you feel during and after dining. The evening meal progressed over a 2 hour period in which we were swept away on a culinary journey combining Thai, Japanese and New Zealand cuisine. It was delightful. Be sure to allow yourself the ultimate indulgence of a Lomi Lomi with Birgit, she is extremely skilled in her craft, and don't miss the morning meditation, this is the perfect way to set positive intentions for the day. Follow this up with an amazing, health-promoting breakfast whilst taking in the breath-taking views of the Abel Tasman, you won’t be disappointed. Split Apple retreat is a blessing, and a wonderful memory I will play over in my mind for life.
