At the moment we made the inquiry, the team we're still working so hard to reach their deadline. After an exchange of emails with Sjoerd, a room was booked even before the hotel was officially opened. Because we had the honor to be their very first guests, we were made to choose our own room. We went for "Kamer Burgelijke Stand en Secretarie" (they kept the original names on the doors) located on the 2nd floor (3rd for USA). It has a blue motif with high ceilings, exposed beams, a large window with shutters, a good sized wardrobe to stack your clothes away, enough floor space to move around, and a beach-themed bathroom/shower. The bed is big and firm but with a wonderfully soft and fluffy top. I'm a sucker for cleanliness and this hotel more than met my expectations.
Hotel het Oude Raadhuis is located on the main street. If you're short of cash, there are 2 banks/ATMs across it. You can also rent a bicycle across the street if you don't want to take the car or walk all the way to the dunes and the beach which is just a few minutes away. There are restaurants, bars and café's, and even the movies - all that within about a 500-meter radius.
Breakfast was served at their Grand Café and was very delicious and plenty! There were different choices of breads, sweet bread fillings, cheeses and cold cuts. There were eggs, cereals, yoghurt, coffie/tea and juices.
Edith and Sjoerd, thank you for making us feel very welcome! You both are the most gracious of hosts.
The breakfast was good - fresh orange juice, bread, cheese, ham, granola and yoghurt, fruit and a boiled egg.
You can borrow bikes, but there aren't enough for everyone so it's a first come first served system each day. We did get one each time we asked, but you can rent them from the station which is a 5 minute walk if needs be. We needed them to get to the beach which is about 3 miles away through the dunes.
I didn't find the owners particularly friendly but they were efficient and polite.
There are a lot of good restaurants and cafes within minutes of the hotel.
Overall it was very good value for the price we paid and I'd recommend it.
We were accommodated in the room right at the top of the old Town Hall which was luxuriously appointed and very comfortable. The hotel is located in the main street and is close to plenty of restaurants. Given we LOVE the sea we drove to the beach for dinner, approximately 5-7 minutes away and ate at one of the great beach bar restaurants while the sun set over the sea after a stunningly blue sky day. Absolutely magic!
The following morning after a magnificent breakfast in the Grand Cafe the hotel organised 2 bicycles which were very comfortable and we set off for a wonderful cycling adventure along the well marked trails which are safe given they are car free and they seemed to go on forever. The track cut through forests and sand dunes which was spell bounding with the glorious morning light. The hotel provides a great map to facilitate your adventure. It was the bike ride and our wonderful long lunch at a beach bar at Castricum Ann Zee which was a real standout and if it wasn't for the hotel we would not have discovered this. Thank you!
Tip: borrow one of the hotel's bikes and take the train from Castricum to Den Helder. Then bike to the Tesso ferry boat and make the 20 minute crossing over to the island Texel. You'll enjoy a wonderful afternoon biking on the island.
"Castricum is a quiet village in November, three train stops to Amsterdam Central. Hotel is walking distance to the station, very convenient."Read full review
"With the window open it's sometimes a bit noisy. So maybe a room on the side or back (if possible) would be advisable."Read full review
