Nestled on a pristine beach within a lush rainforest, The Datai Langkawi is celebrated by guests for its luxurious rooms, complete with high-quality amenities and striking views. The hotel's array of amenities, including indulgent spa treatments and engaging beach activities, consistently receive high marks. Cleanliness is a standout feature, with the entire premises, from the rooms to the pools, kept in immaculate condition. While the hotel's serene atmosphere and exceptional service are highlights, some visitors have noticed occasional service delays. Despite the premium price, many argue that the value and unique experience justify the cost.

My husband and I recently stayed at The Datai for 6 nights in a canopy suite. Unfortunately the weather wasnt kind to us but it didn’t stop us having the most amazing time. We are already looking at going back in 2026. The suite was beautiful, comfortable and bed linen was of high quality, we slept soundly, even when it rained non stop for 3 days. Housekeeping did a great job. We walked to most places apart from The Gulai House when we used the buggy service.

The staff are a credit to the hotel, professional and attentive without being intrusive. Raj looked after us very well and did his utmost to secure dinner reservations and onsite tours. We look forward to seeing him again soon.

Food in most restaurants was excellent, albeit a tad expensive. The Gulai House was our stand out favourite, we went twice in the 6 days. A big shout out to Sivagarran, what a lovely man. Next would be The Pavilion, food was amazing but it was extremely busy so service was a bit hit and miss. The Beach House was really good but the service was lacking. We ate in the lobby bar on our last night and it was excellent. We had cocktails in the Lobby Bar each evening and they were good quality. Breakfasts at The Dining Room were excellent, the fizz was a great start to the day. My husband said the roti and sambal were some of the best he had eaten. Just one minor point from me, please will you change your Bircher muesli recipe and include more oats.

The beach and family pool were beautiful but on a number of occasions staff seemed to be milling around talking to each other, we waited 40 minutes one day to place an order, this was after asking 3 different people. Cocktails on the beach were noticeably different to The Lobby Bar, they were weaker but the price was the same.

Wildlife- one of our main reasons for choosing The Datai was being amidst a rain forest with the hope of seeing wildlife & birds. We didn’t see very many animals but this was possibly due to the weather. We watched a number of dusky langur’s whilst sat on our balcony. They really are so very beautiful. We saw squirrels, macaques, numerous
hornbills., eagles, kites.
We couldn’t do the nature walks due to the weather. Hopefully we can
do these next time.

We used the hotel transfers which were well organised and provided a smooth and comfortable ride, to and from The Datai.

All in all a wonderful holiday, we can’t wait to come back.

Dear Anoif, Thank you for choosing The Datai Langkawi as your holiday destination and for taking the time in sharing your wonderful review & kind feedback. I am pleased to hear that you found the service, quality of our product as well as food offerings (particularly the Roti Canai with Sambal which is favourite to the locals here!) to be of a very high standard. I am also happy to learn that you liked the location of the resort being in the rainforest allowing you to enjoy various wildlife. Mr Rajat & Mr Sivagaran are indeed valued member of our team, and I'm pleased that they made a positive impact on your stay. Your feedback on the staff at the Beach and the cocktail offerings at The Beach Bar, is appreciated and taken note of. We look forward to welcoming you and your husband back soon in 2026 for more unforgettable moments. Warm regards, Stephane Duvacher

The location scout for Garden of Eden - the Movie need look no further than the Datai. The combination of verdant forest, pristine beach and mountainous islands make for a truly spectacular setting. You could spend days just marvelling at the gardens and surrounding country. The hotel itself combines French elegance, Swiss efficiency and Malay charm. It is beautifully built and laid out over the mountainside above the beach. It boasts four excellent restaurants and a host of activities. The nature walks and cooking courses are a must.
We had a basic room up by the main lobby area. It was probably the nicest room I have stayed in at a hotel so I cannot imagine what the more expensive rooms are like! It was a 10 minute walk down to the beach. The walk is so beautiful, you don’t begrudge a minute of it. It is a steep walk back up in the humidity but you can easily hitch a lift in a golf buggy if it is too much.
Beach club has the most helpful staff I have ever encountered at such a place. The bay is well protected so good for sup boarding etc. Less good for windsurfing or sailing although it is worth taking a boat out to catch the views. Water is very sandy so don’t expect great visibility. Service on the beach is exceptional.
The hotel is quite isolated, about 30 minutes from any town, but taxis are cheap and plentiful. It is unlikely you would want to leave the hotel property anyway.
Finally, you are in a jungle so be prepared. Monkeys will raid your room if you leave the doors open and you might be buzzed by a flying lemur on the way to the restaurant at night. The hotel is kept scrupulously clean, so there is no need to worry about creepy crawlies except when on nature walks.

There are hotels that are not hotels in themselves. Why? All employees are hosts, big and small. They are in a good mood, say hello at all times and have an open ear for the guests. From the reception, to the bars and restaurants, to the buggy chauffeurs who take the guests from the lobby to the beach, to their villas and more the restaurants, and the employees who wage the daily battle against the leaves of the rainforest. What does this do: the guests greet each other and start talking, no one gets upset if they have to wait a minute for the buggy. So easy-going at its best. And guests are everyone: essentially the famous best agers, but families and large families with children and grandchildren are also more than welcome and are looked after in a good mood.

Well, The File is in Langkawi and therefore, from a European perspective, at the end of the world + one and a half hours. But you are compensated for this with an analog deceleration, which begins with a view of the water lily pond that adorns the entrance area of the resort. You don't need to book an excursion per se. All the inhabitants of the island come here, led by monkeys. While some, the black ones with funny eyes, quietly gnaw their greens next to the beach bar, the others, the brown ones, like to patrol the guest rooms to see if some tourist isn't guarding his balcony door and therefore you're on his. The fruit basket arrives (1 second), which is then immediately enjoyed on the veranda with an amused look at the surprised tourist. On the other hand: the WiFi also works on the beach ;-)

The File has its “own” beach, which is maintained several times a day; On the right side there is even the ruin of a burnt down hotel, which is rumored to be rebuilt. The guests are also looked after with an unbelievable standard: loungers until you can't wait, towels endless, fruit skewers, ice cream, small drinks until you ask whether your sunglasses need cleaning. Of course there are also water sports: catamarans, surfboards, paddling, etc. And on the beach there is a lounger service that carries and disposes of everything you would like: from roses to fries etc. from the beach restaurant.

The restaurants (Thailand in the Pavillion, Malaysia/India in the Gulei House, fish and meat in the Beach Restaurant) are first class. Service, cuisine and atmosphere are always changing. Even then, the service lady had time and was in a good mood when the 3 1/2 year old wanted to sign the bill. The same applies to the spa with its offering, which can compete worldwide. We didn't try fine dining because we were on holiday.

And of course the bars: on the hill in the main building with a great unobstructed view of the (adult) pool and the surrounding rainforest (the children's pool is on the beach). On the beach there is a beach bar with lunch time and cool drinks.

Not to forget: housekeeping. First class and that with the constant fight against the sand from the beach. Environmental protection and sustainability have not only been a top priority here since the company was founded, but are also practiced on a daily basis.

Last but not least: everything can be made possible upon request. With us, for example, a private dinner on the beach for 10 people with your own grill.

Although we have been to Langkawi before, this is our first visit to the Datai after reading that it had undergone a refresh a few years back. We had arranged for pick-up at the airport who met us promptly and transported us in a nice sedan to the resort - that was ~40 minutes away. The drive to the large estate passed many animals on the road side from hornbills to monkeys who were impressively non-chalant to an approaching vehicle. Arrival was warmly greeted by the front staff who directed us to a scenic view of the resort and who then plied us with cold towels and interesting beverages to cool us down. Check-in was efficient and we were led to a very comfortable and nicely adorned room. The room was of a nice size with all the expected amenities that included unrestricted access to beverages in the fridge. The singular most impactful aspect of this resort is its amazing staff. Throughout our entire stay - be they the cleaning, restaurant and even security staff, everyone was amazingly friendly, helpful and genuinely wanting to please and make our stay a memorable one. I would recommend visiting for this great experience alone. The resort is split between the lobby/lodge and the beach area which is a 5 minute buggy ride away (very short wait times). The lobby hosted 2 restaurants and the beach another 2 with one (Malay cuisine) another 5 minute buggy ride from the klobby area. We partook in a few but not all the restaurants - the food were generally of good quality (but not great) and were varied ranging from local to regional to western cuisine. There is an adult and family swimming pool that we (older copule) appreciated. We also took several sessions at their wonderful spa that is open-air and built into a mangrove with a running stream and wild vegetation. I was personally surprised how pleasant the ambience was - even though it was outdoors in a tropical climate. Even though the resort was 65% occupied, the place was serene and relatively quiet for most of the time. We truly enjoyed our stay - we left feeling relaxed, pampered and satisfied with the experience.

A warm and friendly welcome awaits guests at The Datai. The lobby lounge, which overlooks the main pool, and, from a distance, the Andaman Sea, hosts the check-in formalities. A cold towel, refreshing cinnamon tea, and pastries with jam, all served beautifully, are presented to the guests. A second welcome drink of either a Datai Gin and Tonic or champagne is then offered before guests are escorted to their rooms.

The check-in and welcome set the tone of a carefully choreographed guest experience honed through decades of welcoming guests from around the world. Heightening and enriching guest experience can be felt during our entire stay. It is evident when dining in any of its F&B outlets, partaking in its myriad of water and rainforest activities, and the exceptional spa. However, book your treatments in advance as it has very limited slots. The experience and treatments were, however, excellent.

We stayed in a rainforest pool villa (no 30), which is a short walk to the beach, most facilities, and even the lobby (if you don't mind the steps). The villa is spacious and beautiful; however, a technology upgrade will enhance guests' overall stay. A tablet that allows automated control over lights, blinds, entertainment, etc., will bring the property into the modern age. The tablet will allow for simplified control of light switches, which took some time locating and getting used to; electronically drawn blinds for ease in allowing more daylight into the villa during the day as it can get dark; blackout curtains or blinds, especially behind the bed and a smart tv for those wishing to sync their gadgets; and speakers in the bathroom.

I've read and heard so much about the breakfast at the Datai, and although it was good, I wouldn't say it was the best. Many elements of the Datai are indulgent, but the breakfast is not so. The ala carte options, despite including foie gras and lobster eggs benedict on the supplemental menu, were just OK. The taste and presentation were somehow average.

Service is, for the most part, top-notch and truly five starts but is it personal, not all the time. There were some hit and miss at some of the dining establishments. Also, for its size, it would be challenging. But there was one incident worth mentioning in this review. There was a minor water leak by the windowsill in our villa. I could have wiped it myself but chose to report it so their maintenance team is aware and can rectify the root cause before further and more permanent damage can happen on the wooden ledge. When we returned to the villa after dinner that day, there was a chilled bottle of champagne with a handwritten card apologizing for the inconvenience. Impresssive!

The Datai is an exceptional property. Its remote location in the rainforest right on the cusp of the Andaman Sea, matched with its beautiful design and architecture, warm, friendly, and efficient service, make it a truly breathtaking destination and one I look forward to visiting again very soon.

We had the most unbelievable 4 nights in a premium canopy room. Definitely recommend the premium room if you are looking at the main hotel as the views are spectacular, we spent lots of time drinking delicious cocktails on our balcony looking out over the main pool and rainforest.

The room was extremely well appointed, the bathrooms are wonderful and the housekeeping staff do a fantastic job turning the rooms down twice a day, thank you to them.

The food was delicious, with breakfast in particular standing out in terms of choice and service. The staff couldn’t have been more attentive and made us feel very special, with no request too much!

The staff make this hotel so special. The service is thoughtful, intentional, sincere and welcomed. Every single one deserves a special mention but in particular Akai (hope I am remembering this correctly!) on the front desk and Hannis in the lobby bar made us smile. Thank you ladies!

We cannot wait to come back and will be bringing friends with us! This place is too special not to share with the people you love the most.

Thank you Datai.

Staying in this place would take us away from the reality of life. Here we feel the serenity of mother nature. We saw a hornbill, squirrels, monkeys, different species of bird while we were in the swimming pool. We are living in the midst of a jungle and yet this hotel is so modern internally. Staff are well-trained to serve guests regardless of our race, colors, status, young and old. The setting of breakfast is very special and there is a list of ala carte menu for us to order as much and as many times as we want. Every single pastry is thoughtfully and carefully baked. Every fruit is selected. Authentic variety of fruit juice are in bottles. Room is very comfortable with a large bathroom of 2 basins, 2 wardrobes and 2 sets of amenities. Everything is for him and for her, so couples would not have to fight. Even the free mini bar consists of 2 sets of drinks. A housekeeper tidied our room for the night and left us with 2 candies and added bottles of water. Room comes with a package of kayaking, snorkeling and surfing. Once we come into this place for a getaway, it is hard to come out. This hotel offers us what we want.

A wonderful eight day stay in the rain forest is sadly drawing to a close and I can’t recommend the Datai enough! The service is exemplary from, without exception, the most friendly and helpful staff I think I have ever encountered.

We stayed in the main lodge in the least pricey rooms but even so the rooms were very spacious (easily able to accommodate an extra bed in my grown-up children’s room) so comfortable, impeccably clean and with excellent amenities (tea and coffee making facilities, bottled water, ice, soft drinks and fruit, all replenished twice a day, lovely bath products and great sandles, large bathroom with separate shower and loo, outdoor seated/lounging area in the balcony, writing desk, large indoor sofas and table). Along with the fabulous staff, the food was another highlight of our stay and was outstanding in all four restaurants- the hardest decision was about which to go to. Don’t miss the spa (stunning and unique setting) cookery courses (we did the Thai one which was superb- as a bonus you get to eat the fruits of your labour afterwards) and nature canopy walk. The beach and pools are spotlessly clean and we all enjoyed the jasmine scented cold towels, fruit, ice creams and cocktails which would arrive unbidden throughout the day. The grounds are stunning and for those with mobility issues or who are feeling too relaxed/lazy/hot to tackle the steps from the beach to the lobby, there are great electric shuttle golf buggies ready to whizz you around the resort. For anyone who shares my extreme arachnophobia, I am delighted to say that I didn’t see a single spider outside of the canopy nature walk! Staff went the extra mile with anniversary and birthday cakes, decorations and champagne too!

I couldn’t help but write an ode to this wonderful hotel!!! Our trip took place from 9-13.04 at this hotel, then we moved to Rits Carloton (a complete disappointment, but more on that in another review). We are spoiled people, we travel in the LUX category, we’ve been to a lot of places, we’ve seen a lot of things, we have something to compare with.
So there you go! The hotel was a complete delight! We lived in a rainforest villa as a family of two adults and two children (3 and 7 years old), parents lived in a rainforest pool villa
They put us opposite each other, which was very nice, because the kids were constantly running to the pool! Indescribable sensations from the surrounding jungle in which you are. The hotel itself is located on a mountainous surface, walking to the lobby or the beach is not very convenient, but there are always electric cars at hand... Call the reception and the machine is at the entrance!
Monkeys came to visit us, it was very funny to look at them and even feed them fruit! A sort of attraction for children and adults! The villas are huge, clean, cozy! The service is all top notch!
The beach is clean, not quite white, rather yellow-brown, but fine sand, sea with low tides
The only fly in the ointment will be plankton or jellyfish that bite…. The staff provided immediate assistance in the form of all necessary medications, ointments, etc.
The food is all very, very tasty, if it’s not on the buffet, they will prepare it and happily serve it, the breakfasts are excellent, especially with glasses of delicious champagne
The staff is very responsive, helpful, attentive! Special thanks to reception manager Ike
I just wanted to find out about the sights, how we were immediately offered a car for the trip, and the hotel was also ready to provide a free transfer to the airport or, in our case, to another hotel or store, etc. I am grateful to each and everyone involved in this hotel! You are not working in vain, it’s a pleasure to be with you and I want to come back to you!

Yet again very relaxing stay at this fabulous oasis of a hotel. From the moment you enter the gates in the hotel limo from the airport there is no need to leave. The beach is wide and spacious and great for long walks. Attentive staff bring towels and iced water along with fruit and ice cream. Two pools are also great to sit by and quiet. The restaurants are all excellent and particular mention must go to the amazing pastry chefs who excel at each breakfast and at the occasional beach buffet. No wonder so many people return here year after year for a quiet relaxing holiday

Don’t worry you won’t be confined to your room. The Beach Club area is great for kids under 12 plus evening nature walks and movie nights
