The location of the hotel is good however the closet subway station is on the Teoi Line which means you have to buy a combination ticket if you want to use the more extensive Tokyo Metro Lines too. The nearest Tokyo Metro station is about an 8 to 10 minute walk away - close to which you will also find plenty of restaurants. There are a couple of places to eat nearer the hotel but there isn't a huge variety. As an area to stay, Ueno has a lot to offer the budget traveller whilst being within easy reach of more upmarket areas like Ginza. The hotel is also well situated for those arriving at Narita Airport as the Keisei airport train terminates in Ueno.
My only issue with the hotel is that the beds are indeed pretty hard and there's very limited space to unpack or put your luggage - if you are going to stay at the Villa Fontaine, you can expect to be living out of your suitcase! However all in all, this hotel represents excellent value for money in a city where you money doesn’t normal go far!
The breakfast area was particularly disappointing, basically set up in reception area. The breakfast itself was really basic. one day there was a fruit salad & no yoghurt the next day there was yoghurt and no fruit!
I felt like I was in a backpacker hotel,
A large group of students were also staying in hotel& they were extremely noisey. I did call reception to bring to their attention, didn’t seem to make any difference.
The bed whilst very firm, was great, the pillows not so good, but I was able to get another pillow from reception.
The hotel seemed a long way from restaurant etc
The hotel is loacted in a quiet zone , near by2 metro stations, around 4-6 minutes walking, also near JR station around 8-10 minutes walking. The free breakfast is simple but good taste. By taxi to the Keisei Ueno station for Skyliner to airport is only 820 yuen and takes less than 10 minutes. In front of the metro station there is a big store 多慶屋 they have a supermarket and drug store,...etc also you can get tax refund on the spot. The service of the hotel is nice,
Location: You are two minutes walk from the nearest Tokyo Metro station on the Oedo line. And then about a fifteen to twenty minute walk to the Ueno station which connects you to Narita via the skyliner (44 mins) and the Keisi line (about 90 mins) as well as the Ginza, Hibiya and JR line. These subway lines will take you all over Tokyo to the best locations safely and quickly and at a fairly reasonable price. The location is also great if you want to stay in Ueno as there are plenty of noodle bars and restaurants around the hotel as well as Ueno park and the temple there as well as the zoo and Ameyoko market which has plenty to offer.
Hotel: The hotel is much more of a Western hotel than traditionally Japanese. It is impeccably clean throughout and the staff work exceptionally hard to keep it that way. There is a complimentary breakfast each morning which consists of: salad, soup (varies daily), danishes & toast as well as orange juice and coffee. The hotel also has a laundry facility which is reasonably priced and a few vending machines if you want to eat in your room.
The room: There is complimentary wired internet access in the room as well as a television and a fridge. Our room had a shower & bath and a bidet and was a fairly good size as well. The room although slightly on the small side (though I am told fairly large for Tokyo standards) was nicely decorated. The beds were a little bit harder than we were used to but we have slept like logs the whole time we were here. We went to the front desk to ask for softer pillows and they were provided.
Staff: The staff are very friendly and helpful here. I have not met a staff member who has fluent English but between my broken basic phrases in Japanese and their English I have had no trouble communicating with them and they have always been a pleasure to interact with.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and would recommend it to family and friends and stay here myself as well. The area is very safe and quiet so you can explore the exciting sights of Tokyo and still get a good nights rest.
I have quite mixed feelings about this hotel, it has some good points and bad points.
In terms of location, it's great. You are a 5 minute walk from the nearest subway which is located on the circular Oedo line (which you can take to Daimon and connect to the Tokyo Monorail which goes for Haneda airport). The local area is quiet residential, but in 10 minutes walk you are in the buzz of the lights of Ueno, it it also only around 15/20 minutes walk to 'electric town' Akihabara'.
The hotel itself is spotless, as are the rooms with daily room service. The staff were friendly polite and reception spoke a good level of English (which is not as widely spoken in Tokyo as i'd thought it might be).
We stayed on the 10th floor and there was definitely free wifi in the rooms with no problems at all. This was a real bonus when you are planning your next days activities.
The rooms were small, there is no denying that, and with two of us staying there it was cramped at times. However, I didn't really expect much else for Tokyo given how all space is at a premium! The beds were the most uncomfortable i have ever slept in, with one pillow seemingly made with rice (honestly!). After two weeks i had back ache everyday (and still do a few days after getting back!).
The breakfast was also not my cup of tea and i think could do with some attention and better organisation. It's very Japanese orientated (perhaps understandably) and i am not a fan of salad for breakfast, i also find that the japanese don't really cook their scrambled eggs which turned my stomach slightly. There were some bread products of offer, white breas and mini rolls and mini croissants...however depending on when you arrived for breakfast there might be nothing left until the server went and got more. However this didn't seem an urgency. I must confess i stuck just to a couple of slices of toast for breakfast.
I should also say that the breakfast area is also the hotel lobby/reception. So people would be backwards and forwards with past the breakfast tables.
I would stay here again, but just know that it's basic budget hotel in Tokyo where accommodation is not cheap!
The hotel's value for location is fantastic. Tokyo hotel rooms are infamously expensive and small. For that reason Hotel Villa Fontaine Ueno offers great value as it is walking distance (6-12 minutes) to Okachimachi station.
As a party of 10, including 3 children aged 7-12 and a 65 year old lady, walking from Okachimachi station to the hotel was very achievable. We are minimalist travellers and found no problems with the walk with our backpacks/carry-on roller cases. If you have mobility issues or travel heavy with luggage this may be problematic.
The hotel is a also a moderate walk to Ueno Station, Zoo and Market. Anywhere else is easily reached by rail because access to the Yamanote line means easy connectivity with many of Tokyo's famed sites(Harujuku, shinjuku shibuya).
Reception staff are proficient in English and professional. Check in and check out were handled efficiently.
The rooms are small, clean and sufficient. The bathrooms are compact and tidy. Reception has bath-bombs/fizzers that you can request. We made use of the cute pyjamas(long unisex nighties) which were provided as well as the other standard hotel room amenities.
The included breakfast is simple but definitely enough to start your day. Being that it is included in the already reasonable room rate, we had no complaints. Certainly, if you are needing something extra the hotel is within walking distance to other eateries.
On the ground floor you will find food and beverage vending machines, a microwave and coin operated laundry for hotel guest use. We found the microwave and mini laundrette(washer and dryer) very useful.
In summary, the location was perfectly accessible and connected. Yes the rooms are small but they are clean. Tokyo is an amazing city to explore and I wouldn't waste precious time sitting in a hotel room all day. If you do prefer more ample space or plush surrounds it would be sensible to seek a more expensive hotel.
This hotel is safe and helpful for those travelling in Tokyo on a budget. My family and I stayed here for a very happy 8 days and we would not hesitate to stay there again.
The room itself was exceptionally clean and made comfortable even for someone of an average caucasion build. The room is small compared to UK standards however larger than I expected in Japan. We were on the ninth floor which is ideal as it is high enough for it to be quiet from the main road before.
It is local enough to metro stations such as Shin-Okachimachi and also walking distance to the electonics town. I would however urge the hotel to make themselves more known as each taxi driver we had, didn't have a clue where the hotel was, even with the hotels business cards (in japanese) handed to them.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and even made an effort to eat the breakfast each morning. The breakfasts and simple but enought to fill you until lunch. Well done Hotel Villa Fontain Ueno, you made me a happy and comfortable man on our trip to Tokyo.
