Just a stone’s throw from Ikebukuro, Otsuka provides a unique “retro-Tokyo” feel. Unlike the bustling shopping districts and vibrant nightlife located elsewhere on the Yamanote Line, Otsuka is a place to experience the charm of old Tokyo. Nothing is more nostalgic than the ring of the old Metro Electric Railway’s bell. *The opening date, June 11th 2020, has been postponed until further notice. Perfect hotel in perfect location with perfect room and perfect services.
Hotel location is only 2 minutes by walking from Otsuka station, surround by local sushi restaurant, convenience stores, shops, community mall, park, "antique train" is pass behind the hotel and just neighbor with that famous ONIGIRI BONGO restaurant, which always queue for onigiri (wanna try ?).

The room is equipped with excellent amenities, Bodum glass, towel, hair dryer, air humidifier machine, refrigerator, water heater, shampoo, conditioner & shower gel. decorated with warm wooden color and bedroom located at mezzanine level with proper stairs, for people with height like me is a challenge to keep my head hit from ceiling, but this is how Japanese build the rooms, so just enjoy and keep bend down, complete the Japanese bathroom with shower and bathtub experience.

Absolute suggest you to have experience in this Japanese hotel.

Good location, good hotel, PERFECT !!! love this hotel.

Awesome hotel in a quaint location stone throw away from Tokyo hotspots

Location: 3mins walk from Otsuka station, only Yamanote line, station has elevator so carrying your luggage is fine. Surrounded by Mcdonalds, starbucks, Atre shopping mall, daiso, donquijote, 7-11, green lawson, family mart, pronto, mos burger, supermarket, variety of local food establishment

Hotel: lobby located on 1st floor, very local setting and decors, huge map of Otsuka displayed on wall, passing by the dj bar, restaurant, dining area, and reception before reaching the guest elevators. Amenities and souvenir available before taking the elevator only accessible by hotel guest

Laundry: located at the floor above reception with coin operated wash and dryer. Laundry detergent also made available from vending machines alongside microwave, iron and ironing board

Room: duplex style rooms made the room ultra spacious, ample of space and compartments to store our luggages and shoppings. Sharp airpurifier available and working, local tv channels, extra tatami mat available to turn the living space into the 3rd bedding, upper duplex purely just for sleeping with 2 single bed combine where my family of 3 comfortably sleeps. Shower and toilet are seperated, shower area comes with bathtub and a stool for our tired asses to sit while showering, water pressure is just perfect and hot water temperature is highly relaxing. Like all japanese toilet, the toilet seat defaulted comes with Toto warming seat and auto bidet

Highly recommended
Will definitely return but will opt for other OMO locations in Japan!

The hotel is situated a 2 min walk (literally right opposite) Otsuka train station, which is right on the Yamanote line (1 stop from Ikekuburo, 5 stops from Shinjuku, 8 stops to Shibuya, direct line to Tokyo Station).

The Otsuka area is by no means 'empty', and we found ourselves hanging out there a lot. There is a large supermarket, Daiso, Don Quijote, Uniqlo within a short walking distance. We also loved the onigiri shop (Onigiri Bongo) right beside the hotel.

We have recommended this place to all our friends, and will definitely stay here again the next time we are in Tokyo!

With the mezzanine/bunk bed you really feel the size of the room. It is much bigger than your regular hotel rooms in Tokyo.

The check-in and out process was very cool and easy to use. It is very close to the train station and a short ride to Shibuya and Shinjuku. Would come again.

The hotel was lovely, with a young and fresh design. The location was better than expected, as it was right in front of the metro station for a very convenient metro line. Beds were super comfortable and the place was very clean. Breakfast options could be better, would have loved a traditional japanese breakfast

Location: Located just 80 metres from the subway from the subway. The hotel is located in a quiet neighbourhood. There are numerous restaurants and a family mart is situated right across the street from the hotel

Lobby: Lobby is very homely decorated filled with couches, ottomans and cushions. It looks more like Muji retail shop than a hotel lobby.

Service: Staff was polite and spoke decent English. Check-in-process was done via a "self-service" terminal. It was a quick and easy process. Unlike other Japanese hotels where pajamas are provided in the room, here at OMO5, they are available as an option at JPY200 for a set t-shirt and slacks. Other toiletries are also available for pick-up at the lobby.

Room: The design of the room was amazing. Once again, the liberal use of birch-coloured furniture reminds me of Muji. To maximise space, the beds are located on the top of a loft. The space below is a daybed/sofa and futon where it serves as the living area. Extra bedding/pillow is available to convert the daybed to a third bed. Storage spaces are provided under the stairway. What a clever way of space planning.

The bathroom is located separately from the toilet hence there is no need to "fight over" who gets to use what! There is large window in the room hence it never feels claustrophobic.

After weeks of searching for the perfect "Ryokan" to experience Tokyo, I was very excited to find Hoshino Resorts OMO5, a contemporary version of the "Ryokan" that made our visit to Tokyo truly special!

Having spent nights in different types of Ryokan in my previous visits to Japan, I know a Ryokan is either rather pricy but well-maintained or affordable but out-of-date. Since this is my husband's first time visiting Tokyo, I wanted to make sure he has the best cultural experience through what I'd considered a "homestay" would be like.

Hoshino Resorts OMO5 is clean, chic, yet it preserves some of the best elements of what a traditional Japanese household would look like. The room is compact but extremely functional in every way. I could be reading a magazine in the "living room" (aka the lower bunk) while my husband is taking a nap in the "bedroom" (aka the upper bunk). I loved this place so much that I hope one day I can have this setup for our playroom once we move out of New York city.

If you're wondering whether staying in Otsuka is "too far" away from the city, it is not :) In fact, Otsuka station is only 1.5 block away from the hotel and Otsuka is part of Yamanote line which is a circle line that goes around the city, so you can go anywhere pretty much! There is also a family mart right across the street and a supermarket just 2 blocks down the road.

P/S Did I mention there's also a laundry room in the building? If you're doing some traveling in Asia but don't want to bring too much clothes, this is another bonus point for this hotel!

I ended up staying here after taking a hard look at my itinerary for a recent solo trip and wondering if it would be possible to forego the nicer hotels I had stayed at in Tokyo last November (and which, as part of Japan’s excitement about welcoming tourists again, have since quadrupled in price) and instead experience a cheap, clean, cute place for the more budget-minded traveler.

For the most part, I was right. The OMO hotels (the higher the number, the nicer it is) are owned by Hoshino, so it is still stylish and trendy, and even when corners are cut, it’s done in a way that feels modern and cool. For instance, the hotel lobby - on the fourth floor abutting a Sizzler - is decked out in a theme that references the old cable cars in Otsuka, and there are manga, vintage city pop albums and souvenirs for sale everywhere you look. Check-in is mostly automated, though staff are there to help guide you through the process. On the way to the elevators you can grab some amenities like toothbrushes/toothpaste, combs, etc and rent pajamas. In these ways - and many others, mentioned below - the hotel feels a bit like a hostel, albeit a super cute one.

The rooms themselves are as quirky as the lobby, with a weird but hyper-designed layout: storage is along the walls to maximize the tiny space, the sink takes up half the hallway, and the majority of the room is built out like a large bunk bed: there’s a large futon style sofa on the bottom and a narrow set of steep stairs up to the loft with two small futons for sleeping, with signs urging you to be careful not to hit your head. Indeed I spent my four days there walking around bent over and trying not to accidentally die when I had to gingerly climb downstairs to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

The layout may have contributed to the noise above me that I suffered throughout my stay. But the heavy stomping around felt explainable when I climbed up to my own bed and had to collapse down onto the bed from the stairs in the cramped space.

There was unfortunately also a lot of yelling and running through the hallways but that’s likely attributable to just the kind of tourists looking for a cheap place to stay in Tokyo (of which I guess I was one).

There doesn’t seem to be a cleaning crew. So if you need anything - from new towels to dumping the tiny trash can, which is likely to fill up in a couple days due to the absence of public trash cans in Tokyo - you’ll need to ask the front desk, who pull double duty here. In fact, when my heated Toto washlet wasn’t working, two separate front desk staff came up with tools to try and fix it. Unfortunately they never were able to. However they were very helpful when I accidentally forgot my room card and were able to provide a temporary one without needing to charge me.

Breakfast is terrific, if simple. You get a choice of an American breakfast or a variety of hearty Japanese breakfasts like salmon ochazuke and you get a small onion soup and salad, there are several teas and juices (the yuzu and honey drink was my favorite) and there were always enough tables in the small eating area.

Each night from 8:30pm - 10:00pm, there is a “DJ Night”, which sounds more lively than it actually is. It’s really just one of the staff who plays some vintage songs from a sort of pretend DJ booth and you can dig in the “crates” for your favorite deep cuts. The crowd is mostly a few families with the kids looking confused through the record bins. But it’s really cute nonetheless. I ate my Fami-Chiki at a table one night waiting for the lobby to be transformed into a little club and finally asked the girl at the front desk politely “when does the DJ Night start?” to which she replied “this is it!”.

The laundry situation is a throwback to college when you had two floors of students sharing two washing machines and the phenomenon of people not bothering to retrieve their clothes right away is present here so you get the whole experience.

All in all, the OMO5 is totally worth the cheap prices and is a pared down but really cute, cool, and interestingly designed hotel. It isn’t the easiest to get back to in a taxi, as none of the drivers seem to be familiar with where it is, but the location is convenient; there’s a Family Mart across the street (of course), you’re caddy corner from the most famous onigiri place in Tokyo, and just a few blocks from the subway. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an economical and friendly place to crash.

We absolutely loved our stay here. The rooms make fantastic use of the small space. The room was plenty comfy for 2 people, but may feel crowded with 3 people, and I wouldn't recommend trying to fit 4 adults in one room. The loft beds were super comfy and cozy as well.

The hotel is a 2 minute walk to the JR station nearby, making getting around Tokyo super easy! There's a convenience store right across the street and a ton of amazing restaurants and izakayas in the surrounding area.

We didn't end up taking any tours by the hotel, but we did use the map to find places to eat. If we had more time, we would have definitely booked one or two of the tours.

Overall, I would highly recommend staying here!
