A fine if unremarkable hotel, in an unremarkable town half full of semi rundown old buildings and awful semi rundown and ugly modern buildings. Awful restaurants and no cozy taverns. One to stay at only if you need to stop en route to another destination.
Good things first, the welcome on reception was good and the maitre d in the restaurant was very good. Also the squid starter was delicious. But the room, oh what a disappointment. It was rather on a par with a travel lodge, it had a mean sized double bed, and a view over lots of venting. With the emergency exit light over the door I felt like I was in a hospital. By far the worst parador room I have been in.
I had started the camino in Ponferrada 15 miles away and was pleased to stay in a Parador. This is not one of the refurbished old buildings like the more romantic Paradors but was of a good standard. The pool was great with a spa feel - high powered jets and a sauna. The rooms were spacious and the food good.
Very modern and characterless Parador, but with a light airy feel, and both an indoor and outdoor pool. Food and wine choices are excellent. It was unfortunate that during our stay there was a large British group staying, who swept through the breakfast room like a hurricane, leaving deserted food counters in their wake. In the delightful peace that followed, it took a considerable time for the staff to restock for other guests.
This is a modern, comfortable and friendly Parador in which to stay. We used it as a base to explore both town and the surrounding countryside, including the great bodega of the area, and were able to come back and relax in our large, light and comfortable room at the end of the day; there was lots of useful information in the hotel for activities and staff recommendations of things to do in the area, a nice touch. Given that the Bierzo is known for its food and wine, we ate really well in the restaurant, and enjoyed the waitress talking to us a little about our food. The chocolate dessert was unmissable and we were lucky to get the tail end of the cherry season too. A great place to stay to explore the area.
