We had a lovely stay in this hotel following our first leg of the Via Francigena from Lucca to Siena and it was a wonderful experience. Fabio who took care of our booking and orientation on arrival (and picked us up from Altopascio as we were unsure of the walk down the road) was so friendly and kind. We loved the location and enjoyed a swim and relaxing hour at the pool. Clean and spacious room with plenty of towels etc. Only downside for us was that we should had brought some wine or snacks with us from the town as no bar available onsite. Walked ten minutes in the dark up to the restaurant Tratorria Natale which had wonderful food and we really enjoyed that but forgot we had to walk back!! Seemed longer that way! Overall I would highly recommend this lovely agri tourism hotel in the middle of the country though a little far from Altopascio - would have to get a taxi there and back as no lighting on the road so be aware of that.

Our group of 6 spent the night while walking the Via Francigena from Lucca to Siena. The grounds are beautiful and there is a nice pool, however it was not warm enough to swim as it was early May. The highlight was dinner at Trattoria de Natale which was a 10 minute walk away - one of the best meals we had in Italy. Breakfast was so/so, but the hosts were quite friendly and accommodating.

We stayed three nights here with friends. Casa Fontanino is a nice Tuscan farmhouse set in nice grounds but is very basic. Had the owners (who are not on site) been a little bit more guest-oriented, our stay could have been much more comfortable. The rooms are fine but the walls are paper thin - expect to hear sounds from your neighbours. Breakfast is extra (a bit odd for what is essentially a B & B) and very variable. The breakfast buffet was basic and low quality. We were offered eggs one day but not the other two. Boiled eggs arrived in a bowl but there were no egg cups. Cereal was provided but we had to ask for bowls and milk. The wifi code shown on the door of the property and in the rooms is wrong and the correct code was written on a scrap of paper left in the hall, was difficult to read and was 24 characters long. This in a place where there are no other houses close by, so the network could so easily have been left open. Furthermore, the router is in an understairs cupboard with walls so thick that the effective wifi range is around 3 metres; the network does not extend to the bedrooms, even. The owners did not think to provide even a bottle of water in the rooms and there were no glasses. It didn't help at all that we had just spent three nights in another place where the owners could not have been more helpful and eager to please, so the contrast was very marked.

We stayed at Casa Fontanino for a week in August 2016 and really enjoyed it. We rented the full house for 12 persons so can't speak about the hotel experience. The house is big and confortable. The garden, pool and outdoor areas are beautiful. The kitchen installation is a bit on the basic side, only low point to mention. The contact persons are very friendly and helpful. Well situated to explore lovely villages such as Lucca, Montecatini, Pietrasanta... A great suggestion is to have a local cook come home for a typical local meal, the people that take care of the house can arrange it for you. Great choice for a stay with friends, and perfect with kids.
