The Old Stables is set in the grounds of the main house and offers private accommodation for guests attending an event. The accommodation is very simple and extremely affordable with double/twin ensuite bedrooms priced at approx. £55 per room. A delicious hot & cold breakfast buffet is provided at an additional cost and served from the main house. We highly recommend a viewing and do not feel these reviews are a true reflection of what we have to offer.

Detailed Reviews
We were invited to a wedding here, and stayed over on the night. Had a peek at trip advisor, oh dear, was worried now. On arrival our first impression was wow what a beautiful venue. The food for wedding breakfast was very good, nice attentive service, no complaints there. Our room was fine, not wonderful, but fine, adequate for the money. Breakfast was very small portions but quite nicely cooked, staff friendly, but I don’t think jeans and sweatshirts gives a great impression when serving food. My daughter in law did the flowers for the wedding, and seemed to run into a few problems with the wedding planner about times to set up, and times to clear, there are at least two empty rooms that I could see, would have been nice to have been offered one of them to store the wedding stuff in after the wedding( especially as my daughter in law was at the wedding) then clear at an easier pace in the morning. But no had to be done.
She arrived after breakfast to get the last of the flowers, my son parked out the front, and ran into an extremely rude man who apparently was the organiser of the classic car show on Sunday, mouthing off to my son about not spoiling the wedding for them so don’t spoil their day, as if parking there for a few minutes would have spoiled their day!!!
So, attitudes of some staff, and customers, left a sour taste. Grittenham house, you need to brush up on your customer skills and not be so officious..

Thank you for your recent review we are so pleased to hear you liked the venue and enjoyed the wedding. We appreciate our accommodation is quite basic, as we are an events venue not a hotel we do not offer accommodation in the main house. The accommodation we offer is at the Old Stables within the grounds of the House. In comparison to the main house our rooms are quite simple and we appreciate they are not the same stature of the wedding venue. We do make this clear on our website and price accordingly. The bridal party book the accommodation for their guests, so we are reliant on the bridal party to explain what the accommodation is like. We can see how a guest would be disappointed if they thought they were staying in the main house. We are disappointed to hear that you felt the breakfast portions were small, it should have been a buffet service where you can help yourself. We will also have a word with the staff on duty regarding a more suitable attire. With regards to the floral arrangements, it is usual to clear items away at the end of the wedding day and does form part of our terms and conditions which the bride and groom signed. Where possible and if pre-arranged we can make arrangements for items to be collected the next day. As we are not a hotel we need to make sure there is a member of staff available to open up the House. I believe on this occasions a pre-arrangement had been made to collect the final items before 9am the next morning so that it was prior to that days Classic Car Event. Unfortunately removal was a little later and therefore the next event had already started and cars were arriving to be photographed. We originally placed the flowers in the side passage so they were near to the front door and easy to move, had we known removal would be after 9am, we could have placed them elsewhere and used a different exit away from that day’s event. We can only apologise if you were spoken to rudely, it is of course not acceptable to speak to anyone in such a manner. Unfortunately on this occasion it seems that it was out of our control as it was not a member of our staff. Thank you again for your review, we do take all comments very seriously and use the information to improve or make changes as required.

We stayed here as part of a large private group with a function held at the House. As such, I had access to three of the guest rooms and know the issues I had were not unique to my own room. The word I would use to describe these is “basic” - our own room had two twins pushed together and bunk beds. It seemed very unfinished, poor plasterwork everywhere. Shower water varied from stone cold to luke warm. Nowhere to hang anything in any rooms, so be prepared to live out of a suitcase. Very uncomfortable bed. No TVs (not that we needed one but others might) and no hairdryers etc. Only mirror was in the bathroom above the sink. There is an urn in the main stable so you can make yourself drinks but nothing in the rooms. Breakfast was ok. WiFi was available in the main area only, couldn’t access it from our room, no code anywhere for it (different WiFi to the one that was available in the main area, also different to the one in the main house). One bar of signal from our room so no phone access either. The House was ok - it seriously looks like it needs money spending on it. The outside decked area and gardens are lovely, but look up at the ceiling and it is in dire need of a clean. There is a treacherous unmarked step which guests continually fell up at our evening function on the decked area as you go outside. Food was average - focus perhaps was on quantity rather than quality. For our purposes (a reunion) it was ok but I would suggest if considering for a wedding you should check out all the accommodation available and warn guests in advance they would need to bring hairdryers etc.

Thank you for your review, we are very sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay. For this booking we were asked by the organisers if we could put additional beds in the rooms as there were a lot of guests for a reunion, we were also asked if they could use our staff accommodation and change a meeting room into a bedroom, we were assured they would make this clear to guests and that no one would mind. We charged a reduced rate to the organisers for these rooms, but did not have any control over what guests were charged. The accommodation is in the converted stables and we accept that it does not have the grandeur of the main house, we do make this very clear on our website. We also welcome everyone to visit before they book to review the accommodation, the organisers on this occasions had visited and were happy. Once again we are sorry for any disappointment you experienced.

This is the third year our school have used this as their year 6 residential and I couldn't recommend it enough. All the rooms are ensuite and sleep a maximum of 8 children which was absolutely perfect for us. The staff rooms were in the same block and also ensuite.
The grounds at Gritleton are enormous and the children enjoyed playing sports and going for walks to explore. The food was served in the main house and was a great menu - lasagne, burgers, ice cream etc. Each day we were provided with a packed lunch for our day out and these were ready straight after breakfast.
The layout of the place was great - we were able to sit outside after the children had gone to bed but near enough to keep an ear out for any issues. We had access to a fridge so could bring any extra food with us and tea/coffee was available all day. There is even wifi in the teachers room which is helpful as the mobile signal there is not great!
Josh and Rupert were fantastic and helpful throughout - they really made our stay very enjoyable. Thank you and we hope to be back next year!

What an indecent way to take advantage of young couples & their wedding guests. The place is uninhabitable, disgustingly filthy and poorly converted with minimal investment. How can anyone thinks it’s acceptable to convert some rotten stables into guest rooms with unbearably low standards (how they have the audacity to charge £80/night- I would pay double that to AVOID staying there)!
In my honest opinion, you have to be some extremely deceitful and nasty people to even think those stables are suitable for humans to be staying in. Hence I’m astoundingly disgusted to learn that there are places like this happily charging newly married couples and their close friends and families to stay in what were essentially public toilets for horses on their once in a life time, very special occasion- knowingly they won’t complain to avoid ruining this special event. Like us, we had to sneak out at 23:30 and sneak back in after breakfast. Very luckily, found a beautiful clean and spacious country hotel called The Hare and Hounds around the area. Unfortunately, this disgusting stables at Grittleton has now left me with a mental scar- to the state I feel I couldn’t take photographic evidence of their ‘breakfast’ and ‘converted’ stable area to show you, as I truly didn’t want to see that ever again. I hope whoever is considering this place for your special day finds this honest review if they are considering staying overnight.

We thank you for your review. We can only express as we did at the time and again on the phone the next day, that we are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. Thank you for taking the time to let us know that you do not like horses and converted stables are definitely not your choice of somewhere to stay. As explained the bride and groom booked the accommodation for you and they selected the room for you to stay in. It does clearly state on our website that the bedrooms are in converted stables and are simple and not of the same stature of the main house. We visited your room the next morning after receiving your complaint and found the room to be clean, the picture of the ceiling which you have posted is where the original wood has been varnished with a fire retardant cloudy varnish, and there was no mould. We do agree that the shower is in need of attention and this has been scheduled in for repair/replacement. We have not disputed any of your claims either at the time or now and you were issued a full refund at the time. We are neither deceitful nor nasty we have not attempted to mislead anyone. The bride and groom booked the accommodation for their wedding and their guests and they were very happy. We agree the hotel you stayed at is very nice and is priced at £180 per nights as opposed to our accommodation (we are not a hotel) at £55.00 plus breakfast. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, we will as part of our maintenance programme be reviewing all rooms over the winter period.

Where to start... The Wedding Coordinator is THE rudest woman I have ever come across! She literally walked a potential couple into the room 4 bridesmaids, 3 flower girls and the Bride herself were getting ready!!!
She tried kicking us out of the room before the bride was even ready!
Told the photographer what photos to take and where! And tried stopping the Bride fixing ger Veil which was the wrong way round (as she was being rushed).
This venue was booked under the pretence that they would be getting married in the Library as it fitted with the theme perfectly! To then be told a couple of weeks before the wedding this can no longer be done as it is now the bar... but then the morning after the wedding the bar had been removed from the library overnight for the wedding that day!! Which took priority over my friends wedding throughout the whole day!! They had to clear rooms out as they were finished being used as the next days Bride wanted to set up early!!
The House and the grounds itself were absolutely stunning!! And the food both on the day and the breakfast the following morning was lovely! But the staff really let this venue down, don’t risk it! Their priority is not the Newlyweds happiness!!!

Thank you for your recent review, we are saddened to hear that your overall experience was not satisfactory, it is a huge honour to be a bridesmaid and an important responsibility to look after the bride. Following this review and your reviews on FB we have looked into the matter in great detail and can only apologise if you felt in any way that you were being rushed or did not have the day you wanted. The wedding coordinator has the responsibility to ensure that all elements of the day run smoothly as a few minutes delay early on can impact on the whole day. We are also bound to the registrar’s timings and rules. The registrars had asked for the room to be vacated so that they could run through the legal details with the bride, during this meeting no one else is permitted to be present in the room, they also asked that the table be cleared so that they could go through the legal documentation. Once the formalities were dealt with there was then the opportunity to finish a few small details, whilst the registrars got settled in the ceremony room. We appreciate it can be stressful whilst preparing, especially if you are trying to get little ones ready and very easy to lose track of time. We do try and give timing reminders throughout the morning, but maybe on this occasion we could have been more aware of how much there was to do and let you know sooner. We also take on board your comments about other couples being shown round on a wedding morning. It is usual for couples to see the venue when it is set up and indeed the bride and groom who were getting married would have visited on the morning of another couples wedding. We will make it clear in future that this may be the case, but we will ask that any potential couples refrain from taking photos without permission, we have already ceased showing any couples anywhere near to the drawing room when the bridal party are getting ready. We have now had the opportunity to speak to the photographer, who advised that she was not familiar with the house and found the guidance of the wedding coordinator to be very helpful as she pointed out lots of good areas for photos. We also spoke to the groom once he returned from his honeymoon and he also confirmed that he had a lovely day and was very happy with everything.

We brought a class of 10 and 11 year olds to stay for 5 days in June 2015. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The ensuite rooms were well appointed. Our children commented that it was "like staying in a posh hotel". The bathrooms were excellent and all bed linen plus bath mats were supplied. The rooms were cleaned every day.
The quality of the food was superb - proper food cooked well and something for even the fussiest eater. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Whilst we had planned 2 days of activities off site ourselves, Rupert and Josh were kind enough to offer us swimming and golf on site. I would not hesitate to recommend this as a venue for a school residential. We have already rebooked for next summer.

I recently took 30 Junior School pupils on a hockey tour to the Bath area and stayed in The Old Stables at Grittleton House for 2 nights. I do not have enough positive things to say about our experience there, and how perfectly it suited our needs.
It is a very secure environment with coded doors to all pupil/staff accommodation and is fairly secluded on the grounds of the school. The price was excellent value for money (which included 2 nights stay, breakfast and packed lunches for the 2 days) and the quality of the accommodation, breakfast (buffet style with all options and staff serving at hot pass) and lunch was again, outstanding. We had a couple of pupils with very specific dietary requirements and the staff at The Old Stables were very accommodating; it did not feel like it was a burden to them which it can seem to be when you visit certain places! The only slight issue is that all beds were very squeaky!
One of the best parts about the whole process was the dialogue I had with staff (namely Rupert and Josh Tabley) prior, during and after the trip. They really made us feel welcome and were there in case of any emergencies without being intrusive. They made us feel valued as a customer and not just 'another group'.
As I have mentioned, I cannot say enough positive things about the whole experience and will certainly be using The Old Stables again if we are ever staying in the area. Highly recommended for school groups.

80£ a room!!! If they would pay me 100£ to stay there, I will still have to consider if it’s worth it! My friend the bride would be so embarrassed and disgusted to know her friends and guests had to stay in such condition ( in a old stables) when the guests would be enjoying a great celebration!
Why? Why? Would anyone have such a beautiful house but give no attention to what’s inside? Felt like a scam really....
and to the “manager” don’t even bother to give me some silly auto reply excuses.... just stop charging high prices what a dump or clean and update the place.
Pity.....

Thank you for your recent review, we are devastated that you had such a bad experience. We are an Events Venue not a hotel, and are only able to offer some simple accommodation at the Old Stables which is situated within the grounds. We do not take individual reservations, instead we hire the self-contained accommodation in its entirety to the bridal party. The bridal party book the accommodation on behalf of their guests, they also have the opportunity to view the accommodation before they book. We suggest to the bride and groom that a double room should be charged at £55 with an additional £10 per person for a full buffet breakfast and unlimited tea, coffee, juice, toast, cereals etc. We understand that the accommodation is not of the same stature of the main house and so choose to keep the prices low for that reason. We can also see that a guest would be disappointed if they thought they were staying in the main house and then found they were not. We are dependent on the bride and groom to communicate this information to their guests. The property is cleaned after each use and we will be carrying out a refurbishment programme throughout the winter. We will also try and think of a solution as to how the information can be communicated to guests better. Thank you again for letting us know your views, we do take all comments very seriously.

If weddings mean nothing to you then go ahead.
However, if they do- I’m warning you to avoid at all costs. The main house is very run down with school toilets for guests. Absolutely horrible catering and services!!
Accommodation is absolutely filthy and disgusting, my dog won’t be able to sleep there, let alone humans or more importantly, wedding guests.
Ignore all the exterior photos unless you sleep on the outside. Picture the place exactly like some run down stables, without the hay and horses but the filthiness and smell remains. I would very much like to wipe that off from my memory.

Thank you for your recent review. We are truly disappointed to learn of your experience. Grittleton House is a Victorian Manor House which is regularly decorated and routinely repaired, due to the nature of the building there will always be some jobs to be done. Our website shows many current photographs of the house most of which have been taken in the last 12 months, the photos offer both indoor and outdoor shots. We receive many compliments from visitors who are wowed by the beauty of the house, photographers love coming here as there is so much to photograph. Our kitchen has recently been renovated and received a 5 star rating this year. Our executive chef is Michelin trained and heads-up a great team of chefs, who have all worked in high class establishments, are well qualified and have lots of experience and talent. We have many letters and cards from guests complimenting the food. We would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your experience further and to understand how on this occasion we have left a guest so dissatisfied. From your review we are not able to match your comments to a wedding, please can you advise which wedding you attended so that we can look into this matter further and treat it with the seriousness it deserves, please email mail@grittletonhouse.co.uk.
