Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Absolutely loved Gateway - we stayed in the "Bonecrusher" Room.
Really warm, spacious and comfortable.
Even though it is on State Highway 2, we didn't hear any road noise
Definitely has a lot of character.
Historically, structure was horse stables and rooms are named after champion thoroughbreds
Breakfast was generous, warm and well-cooked.
Rupi and other staff were really welcoming and helpful.
Gateway will always be our first option for when we visit our best friends next time

Perfect stay destination in Masterton. City centre just 5 - min drive the rooms were really well kept, they were warm and comfortable. The mattress and shower were amazing. Had a parking space just on the back of my room so that was very convenient. Staff and services surpass everything. Best hospitality.

Although my partner and I stayed just one night at the Gateway in Masterton, it would easily be my first choice for accomodation if we ever passed through again. We stayed in a room named for Kiwi icon, Phar Lap. Extremely clean and we'll appointed, the spacious room smelled fresh. Linen was good quality, the bath was deep and, with the rooms at the back of the property, there was almost no traffic noise from SH2.
Our host, Randhir, was quick to respond to emails, and very helpful when we arrived.
Definitely recommend.

The Bathroom was great and the room spacious but there was no sky tv and the room lighting was very dim. The restaurant and bar were not open according to a sign that read closed due to covid 19 and staff redundancies. The person in reception gave us no information at all regarding the hotel itself or the surrounding area or where to eat. including that we could park outside our unit. After 6 pm there is absolutely no staff in the hotel even at night and no details for whom to contact if you need anything. I was asked for my vaccine pass upon check-in but my wife was not. Ask for a room at the back as it is quieter, there are other motels closer to town as this is not within walking distance it is a 20-minute drive. There was a sofa in the room and bedside lamps, as well as a kettle and tea and coffee and the liquid soap, was watered down to save money. There was a patio to sit out on and enjoy the sunset.

Very poor experience. At the time of booking, the first nights stay was immediately taken from my credit card. Then before our trip, my husband was called up for hand surgery, and we needed to change our plans. When I contacted the Gateway, to cancel the booking, we were unable to get the $160 refunded. I have never come across this before. So when we did get to rebook, we stayed just one night at the Gateway, and the other nights elsewhere .And so glad we did.
This was the worst place we have ever stayed. The outside looks totally unkempt and uncared for
Reception hours are 2pm till 5pm...only .But no-one at reception at 2.15 and had to ring.
Then.. there is notrestaurant and bar. The big sign at roadway should be removed. So the nearest dining was about 1.5 kms down the road, and it was pouring with rain.
Decor is outdated.
No Sky TV channels.
Milk in fridge was past use by date.
Bodywash container in shower pump was broken.
The microwave cord did not reach the plug, without pulling the shelf out, and have it balancing precariously.
Could hear room next door having shower at 9.30pm.
Then when we went to bed, there was a light in the kitchenette, that could not be turned off, and it flickered all night long, so intense you could still see it with eyes shut.
So...on the plus side, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was nice and clean.
But value for money, and comfort, I cannot recommend this place

Dear Guest, We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused to you during your stay. The hotel has a 24- hour cancellation policy and we adhere to it. Unfortunately, you requested same day cancellation which couldn't be done because of our policy. We are the only hotel in town with 24- hour check-in policy. No matter how late you need a check-in, we certainly offer that service. It seems your review is mostly deriving from the fact that your same-day cancellation request wasn't accepted by the hotel, and you had an issue with every aspect of the hotel. Will really appreciate if you can go through other reviews on Trip Advisor as well as other OTA's.

Very disappointed when we arrived to check in. We were told the room was available....BUT seeing that it is 11.30 am and not 2pm check in time we were asked to pay an extra $15 per person if we wanted to check in early! We are seasoned travellers and have never, ever been asked for this. We did not pay and only because we had prepaid the accommodation, we went back at 4pm to check in. Or we would certainly found somewhere else to stay. Room was very clean but dated. No mirror in bath room or vanity. An average room promoted as a Double king suite! No where for a computer table. We have never reviewed before but felt very strongly about doing this one. Also a slight curry smell throughout. We will not check in again.

We stayed at the Gateway Motor Inn for 4 nights. Our visit was under trying personal circumstances due to a loved family member passing. Rupi was very caring and an awesome host, making sure our stay was as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Thanks again. Judy (Tauranga)

One of the best motel in Masterton. Rooms are well maintained, spacious and shower is the best. Heating pumps keep you so warm and it feels luxurious from inside. Staff is amazing. Ample parking spaces we could easily park our truck. I strongly recommend this hotel.

It was a lovely location with a pleasant welcome. The things that let it down where the maintenance, our door wouldn’t lock and the outside grounds and weatherboards could do with a spruce up. It’s a pity that the owners haven’t used covid for the detailing that is needed for a boutique tag…

The manager was very accommodating when an early check-in was requested which was much appreciated. Lovely clean room with great shower pressure. Beds were comfy and having a heat pump in the room was great in the heat!
