Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We changed our booking at the last minute and ended up in one of the dorm rooms with four beds, two bunks. These rooms are designed for two occupants and was extremely crowded with four of us without enough space to keep our luggage. On the positive, the setting is lovely, the public spaces are well maintained with everything you need. The washing/dryer machines are much appreciated after tramping. The staff are wonderful and helpful. on the negative, the sandflies are nasty, and the code system to get into the rooms is a nightmare.

It was a very lovely stay there. I slept in the dorm and it was the most silent dorm I have been. The shared kitchen is big enough for everyone and I really enjoyed the silence there. It is perfect for a little break in the nature. I spent some minutes in the hot tub in the morning and felt so good.

Tha accommodation was nicely decorated, all clean and modern. We stayed in the lodge building with a shared bathroom and lounge. The room was comfortable but extremely small. I had a lot of difficulty walking around the bed and to fit our two suitcases in the room. The shared kitchen was very well appointed and a good meeting place. There also was a hot tub but that was a bit disappointing, great view though. There are all different sorts of accommodation, from luxury till budget and a campground opposite.for me it was a bit confusing and mixed up. I loved sitting on the veranda but there were very many sandflies and they were very aggressive. The most from all my traveling through New Zealand. I’ve sprayed insect repellent but got still bitten over 30 times and ended up staying indoors. A real shame as the surrounding is so nice and calm.

Stunning location for some rest n relaxation. Or plenty of walking and outdoor activities nearby if that’s your thing. Enjoyed just taking in the vista along with tasty snacks. We stayed in an eco lodge which had all we needed. Definitely need to apply sandfly repellent. A non toxic variety was supplied. A tranquil vibe. It’s about a 75min drive from Queenstown around the lake.

I was really disappointed to be honest. You can forgive a lot of a place is clean and the room and shared facilities were a bit grubby. Found previous occupants tissues behind the bed and there are splatted insects dotted around the bathroom. The location is great, but we wouldn't stay here again. It feels like backpackers accommodation at 4 star Hotel prices.

Sorry that the site wasn't clean enough Robin, we have spoken with housekeeping about these issues and this definitely isn't our usual standard. Our prices are all comparable to Queenstown, despite our remote location, and are what you would pay there for similar facilities, not 4 star hotels. We have plans to finish renovating the rest of the site next month, which means the shared facilities will be brough up to standard with the rooms which were all renovated in Sept/Oct, unfortunately we ran out of time to get everything done before the season started.

Our stay at Kinloch Wilderness Retreat far exceeded my expectations. Our rooms were very comfortable and access to the living area and library/game room and front porch made the visit particularly delightful. There were plenty of opportunities to "lounge" and relax. One in our party initially had some concern about sharing a bathroom. However, it never presented a problem and the bathrooms were always accessible, spacious and clean and tidy. We particularly appreciated the opportunity to bring our own food and drink and to have use of the large kitchen and dining hall. Space for our food was provided in a large refrigerated section and also in individual plastic containers intended for shelf staples. The lodge provided ways to label everything. It was delightful meeting other trekkers from around the world and sharing cooking, food and conversation. We took a kayak trip which was also wonderful and a great way to see the great beauty of the area. The retreat was close to the Routeburn Track and other hiking areas as well as some filming locations for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It was all splendid. Staff were personable and helpful. I would highly recommend this place and hope to return some day.

Disappointing as not really a wilderness. There on weekend but concrete mixer going constantly, room size minimal, no room for suitcases. On web site the rooms looked much bigger. Some aspects not in their control such as Busy road as people went to Greenstone track, Dart river jet boats and helicopters but this should stop them advertising as a “Wilderness retreat” as some of us expected peace and quiet and bird song.

Thanks for leaving a review. We're sorry the concrete mixer was going during your stay but sometimes we just have to get work done when the weather and staffing works out. We try to portray our offerings accurately, I'm not sure how much bigger you expected the room to be but we took the photos ourselves, not a professional trying to exaggerate anything. We are in the wilderness, surrounded by beach forest, down 9km of gravel road, and while we cannot control external parties like the jet boats and helicopters, they aren't making noise for very long while around and only operate in the day, and the noise would be heard by most places you stay in the Glenorchy area. There is a lot of bird life in the area, much better than some wilder parts of NZ as there has been a lot of trapping and work put into it, at night you can only hear the owls and frogs usually. A weekend is rarely the quietest time to visit anywhere.

Overpriced for poor accomodation. This is the 10th accomodation during our New Zealand trip we've visited and it is by far the worste. We've had the lakeside room with ensuite bathroom. Due to the lack of isolation and single glazing, the windows were very wet on the inside every morning. Health wise certainly not ideal. The bedlinen was too small to keep me warm at night and there was no closet or shelves to lay our clothes. I didn't measure the bed but it was certainly too small for me (1m89). Luckily the restaurant has a very good chef, but the prices were again too high in my opinion in comparison to other places we've visited (40NZD for a glas of wine, an alcohol free gin drink and a coffee).

Thanks for leaving a review. Our buildings are old, it's what gives them character, and while we are always trying to improve we can only change so much about them at a time. Last year we did a complete renovation painting the exterior and interior of the buildings, and changing furniture and fittings in the wilderness rooms and TV room. We plan on updating the guest kitchen and toilets in the next couple of months. The bed is a double as advertised, and the bedding is appropriate to the size of the bed, perhaps you would have been more comfortable in a queen or superking bed. The ensuite has hangers on a rail and a shelf above it, and there is a mirrored cupboard above the sink - most guests only stay a night or 2 and therefore don't typically unpack that much. Our prices are comparable to offerings in Glenorchy and Queenstown; we operate more remotely than either location and as a result everything costs us more as we have to freight it in but we try to keep our prices as reasonable as possible while also sourcing locally and organically - alcohol free gin isn't much less expensive than gin with alcohol to purchase.

Eco cabin nice and cosy, wonderful view of lake. Lodge meals wholesome and tasty. Location near enough and far enough from Glenorchy (where there are great cafes). I also recommend pack rafting in the Rees Valley for a super day out to enjoy the scenery and have some physical activity (see Packrafting Queenstown) and the many walks nearby (Glacier Burn, Routeburn, Diamond Lake, Lake Sylvan).
