This is a very nice ryokan in a beautiful location. I pity anyone who tries to drive here, they will collect you in a shuttle bus from Nagasaki station. This is our third ryokan experience and each one has been different. The kaiseki feast was exceptional, this was served in our room in the evening sitting on tatami mats as usual but breakfast was at tables in a communal dining room which is unusual. You can wear your yukata to this if you wish but most Japanese wear their normal going out gear. You can book a private onsen which is an essential part of your experience in a ryokan. Popping a small icecream in your mouth when emerging as a boiled lobster is to experience satori. Excellent English is spoken by staff at reception. I would very much recommend this ryokan and Unzen in general for at least two nights. Just a few general points: The village of Unzen is a 5min walk away. Having arrived after dark, we didn't realise this and booked the shuttle bus to drive us there the following morning. There was very little open in the village when we were there. Oddly there is no convenience store eg. 7-11 but there is a small Japanese general store. The Tourist Office is a 2min walk toward the village and is very helpful for advice on local sightseeing. If you want to take the cable car (and you will), the bus there is 11am, If you miss this the next is 2pm.

We stayed for 2 nights and the great staff really spoiled us! We also had the best food in 3 weeks of travelling throughout Japan, the onsen is great and nature also allows great walks. The only challenge was communication and in this case Google translate helped ,-). Thank you very much for this superb Japanese experience!

The hotel is about 1.5 hours away from Nagasaki proper. The last 20 mins of the road are hairpin turns that rivel the Alps. The hotel itself is very warm, say 80 degrees. It felt odd and strange until we checked in and were given a Yukata, which is a lightweight Kimono. I am not sure if it was mandatory to wear them as the language barrier at this hotel is HUGE. So we did wear them and it was a fun experience, but I can see how some people might be caught off guards and not comfortable parading around in underwear and a Yukata. Our room was large and pleasant. It also had a small fridge. The hotel is large and has three elevators at different parts of the floor, so some rooms are very far away from the lobby or restaurant. The restaurant has lots of different food stations, naturally heavily focused on Japanese cuisine. There a few Western items, enough to fill you up if you don't eat Japanese. (But then again, why are you in Japan??) The buffet does not include alcohol, but juices, waters, teas, coffees. here is the biggest issue we had with the hotel. We had three rooms booked, but they gave us two rooms without a shower or a bath. Yup, the room had no facilities to clean yourself. When we mentioned this to the front desk, they apologized and they gave us two suites. Then on the second day the demanded we moved again to a regular room as they had assigned the suites to other guests. Due to the language barrier this exchange took up 2 hours of our time and we had to move in the end. I think it is unacceptable to make guests with paid confirmed reservations move twice within 24 hours. The hotel's inability to manage their rooms allocation correctly should not be a problem that the guests have to pay for. Since you can't rely on the hotel to honor it reservations or committment and no English is spoken, I suggest to proceed with caution if you are a non-Japanese speaker. There might be other hotels in the area that are more dependable.

We spent two wonderful nights at this roykan. As you can read in previous comments, it is not a modern hotel, it is a traditional ryokan in Japanese style how it should be. We booked a Japanese room with the futon bed, which was very comfy. The various Japanese dinner was also served in the room. The staff at the reception speaks English the rest of the staff does not, but the lady who took care of us was so warm that even with the language barriers we could communicate with each other perfectly. The view over the hot springs is spectacular and we went hiking up to a pass. Otherwise there is not so much to do in this village.

This ryokan is the most hospitality for guests that when it is to check oout from check in and very good view for both gerden and hot spring site. You will have the most high hospitality experiece. You will receive small ice cream when you go out from hot spring that is very good. Good meal and good hot spring. All thing great! You will have great Omotenasi!

This hot spring hotel sits right on top of geothermal activities. In fact, smoke rose up from its garden. The hot spring quality is very good. This is the only place I ever visited that gave you a small dollop of chocolate ice cream after a bath. There was a lovely garden and the room was spacious and tastefully furnished. Would love to come back.

We spent a night here during our family trip in Nagasaki. My husband and I chose this hotel to celebrate his parents' golden wedding. In fact, Unzen was among their destinations on their honeymoon 50 years ago, and we found we had the right decision to stay here this time. Since their launch in 1929, the hotel has received renowned authors including Novel laureate Kawabata, talented painters, musicians and actors. The movie director of 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Laurence' was among their frequent customers. One of the best locations in Unzen, very rich hot spring, fabulous food with wide variety, staff hospitality, great management with grace and pride, you will never regret your choice. We are grateful for their warm and heartful welcome. Will we stay here next time we visit Unzen? YES.

A nice traditional onsen hotel with a lovely outdoor park. The staff are very polite. We booked a Japanese-style room with the Unzen onsen view. The room is very nice and large. The food is traditional Japanese one. Also, can reserve the private onsen for 40 minutes which is very good.

We stayed there for one night with a special plan with meal included and the private onsen booked just for us (for 25 minutes, but it is long enough ! ) We had a european / japanese style room, half of the room was with tatami. You have the confort of a real bed ( ;-) ) and you can enjoy the tatami. Concerning the food, not everything was perfect (cold and not crispy tempura...) and you could find better kaiseki in other restaurants, but considering the price, and sthe service (we ate in our room, with one waitress bringing the dishes one after the other) I found it amazing ! Moreover, we had to ask a special meal without fish due to allergy, and they replaced all the fish / seafood containing dishes with something else equally good, even for the breakfast ! That was really kind. The shuttle bus from / to Nagasaki / Isahaya can be booked in advance for free and is very useful.
