After an abrupt change of plans due to flooding and road closures, Paula and Roger welcomed us into their very cosy home. Fortunately for us there was a room available for the extra night we needed it and an unexpected couple of days to explore the Invercargill/Bluff and then Manapouri and Te Anau areas. Paula gave us excellent sightseeing suggestions (In Invercargill the World of Transport, in Te Anau the film “Shadowland” @ Fiordland Cinema, lunch at Sandlily Cafe next door). We joined the other couple staying for a roast lamb dinner served with a roasted vegetable salad, roasted potatoes and mashed peas with a chocolate berry brownie for dessert. Paula is not only a responsive and gracious hostess, she is also a talented cook.
This working ranch is a comfortable respite and well worth a stay. Also well located along Highway 6 about and hour’s drive to Invercargill, Te Anau and Queenstown.

Quite agree with the excellent ratings from others.as they have described the place and the thoughtful hospitality accurately we won't repeat it all, except to say don't miss Paula's cooking! Altogether pleasant and restful 2 day stay
We found queenstown rather overcrowded and this was a much better option for us.the roads move fast in this wide open country and you can be in queenstown invercargill or te anau in an hour.Milford sound is two hours on from te anau but we set off at ten from five rivers and were back at six thirty having seen everything we wanted and done a three hour cruise

Arrived here after a 90km ride on one of the hottest days in Southland and found a perfect place for the night. Lovely decorated room, large ensuite and wonderful hosts.
Not to mention the home-cooked dinner as well as the hearty breakfast Paula prepared for us. We definitely felt more than welcome and would surely stay again when next time in Southland.

Paula has done a lovely decorating job in her rooms. Our room was spacious and lots of room in the bathroom. A very nice touch was the Pizza and wine they offered shortly after our arrival at no cost. The breakfast was beautiful, Maple syrup and Otago apricots. Paula very kindly offered to drop us at the right spot to cycle the trail which we accepted. If Paula hadn't done this for us we would not have been able to cycle the distance. Thanks so much. I would highly recommend it.

Tracie and her family were so welcoming and helpful. The little motel is in a great location for fishermen and for adventures in queenstown, doubtfull sound, and te anau. It is close to everything. The little fish and chips shop in town is great great, the blue cod is amazing. The whole town was very friendly.

We wanted to experience a real New Zealand farm and Paula, Roger and Ruby gave us a perfect experience. They are such gracious hosts and their home is set up to give guests lots of hospitality and as well as privacy, depending on ones tastes. Watching Roger and Ruby work the dogs and the sheep was just amazing and Paula's cooking at dinner and breakfast was wonderful. We felt so at home and just loved the whole time with them. Our room was large and comfortable, good wifi access, lovely bath with heated floors and coffee-making capability in the room. (Also, I understand that this could be a great experience for fishing enthusiasts.) If you want to now the real New Zealand, stay here!

Experienced a local farmstay here on nov 2011. They treated us well and i have a long conversation with the wife regarding the differences in singapore n NZ. She prepared a sweet chilli sauce veggie pizza and it was superb. I will always remember that taste as it was the best pizza i ever tasted. They also cooked up baked salmon with sweet chill on top. As we singaporeans are crazy over chillis or hot and spicy, they are kind enough to add this in our meals. Excellent rooms n we feel like we are in a home being well taken off. The hubby brings us for an exploration of his farm n animals. Fantastic farmstay which my wife n i personally recommended. I hope the owner read this n remember me as the guy that fix your wireless internet issue.

Cheers mate.....job well done!!

The position of this property, about an hour and a half from Te Anua or Queenstown, means that not everyone would find it an ideal location. We used if for a one night, mid-way stop between Te Anau where we were staying and a day-trip Milford Sound and Dunedin. It's not near spectacular mountains or picturesque lakes, but in good farming country. It is a working sheep and deer farm. The location would be great if you were a fisherman, which I think is the market that it is aimed at. Which is a shame, because you'd miss out on a lovely property, with excellent hosts and plenty of local knowledge. We opted for the evening meal, at an extra cost, and had a Southern Roast Lamb meal, with all the trimmings, plus home-made pizza as an entree earlier in the evening and a lovely desert. Beer and wine were complementary. The lamb was farm grown, killed on the farm and tasted delicious. Our room was large, with a large and modern en-suite with heated floor and quality soaps etc. The bed was large and very comfortable. Free Wi-Fi was available and out hosts, Paula and Roger full of great stories and advice about what to see and where to go. We changed our itinerary because of their advice and were glad that we did. I especially liked the touch of Paula sending me a 'real' email after I had booked through their reservation system, which worked well. It wasn't budget accommodation and therefore priced higher than other properties, but it was good value for money and would make an excellent base to explore the South of the Island for a few days.

My husband and I, and my parents stayed at the Five Rivers this February. We all loved it! The rooms were nice, the beds were comfy, and the bathrooms were luxurious. It was a bit of a splurge from a pricing perspective, but was worth every penny. Paula and Roger made us feel right at home, and Paula's breakfasts were divine. They invited us to chat and enjoy some homemade lemon poppy seed cake by their fireplace the first evening. The second day my mother and I just relaxed and enjoyed their beautiful yard, while the guys fished in the area. I would recommend this to anyone!

We had a wonderful stay at Five Rivers Retreat on March 16th and 17th, 2019. Paula and Roger are an amazing couple, and the accommodation and hospitality were beyond our wildest expectations. We were warmly welcomed and after dropping our bags in our immaculate and beautifully appointed room we were ushered into the cosy lounge room where Paula lit a wood fire and supplied us with a glass of wine and cheese platter. The gardens and surroundings were just magic. Every morning, Paula set out an amazing breakfast with everything you could possibly want on the table.
I couldn't recommend this place more highly. Leonie Ganivet
