Built originally as a private house on the banks of the River Severn,as early as 1725, commissioned by Richard Hill of Tern Hall (which would later become Attingham Hall, a stunning National Trust property open to visitors that sits opposite us). Since then it has had many names, before settling on the unusual Mytton and Mermaid in the 1930's after being purchased by the famous architect Sir Clough Williams Ellis, who developed the Italianate village of Portmeirion North Wales. Sir Clough converted the building to a hotel and chose the name Mytton after a local character ‘Mad Jack Mytton’ a gentleman who squandered his fortune in the most spectacular way, and the Mermaid came from the crest of the Portmeirion hotel. The building is surrounded by beautiful patios to sit and enjoy the sunshine (when we are blessed with it), we have a Private Dining Room that seats up to 18, perfect for family gatherings and small meetings and we have 10 bedrooms if you’d like to stay with us overnight.

Nestled by the river, The Mytton And Mermaid Hotel offers a stylish and inviting atmosphere that captivates guests. Travelers commend the hotel's tasteful decor and the cleanliness of its well-maintained spaces. While the rooms' design and the hotel's amenities receive high marks, some guests have called out the limited space and noise issues. The riverside location is a hit, although it can lead to a bustling environment. Despite the friendly service, instances of slow response times have been noted, and there are concerns regarding the value, with criticisms of overpriced meals and service inconsistencies.

My wife and I visited The Mytton and Mermaid for the second time since Brunning Price took it over and renovated the establishment into the comfortable and relaxed multi roomed restraunt.

Do be aware that it is now very popular and parking can be difficult at times . The small front car park is now patrolled by a parking man at busy times to save it getting blocked . The slightly larger car park at the rear is accessed by the road to the right of the Mytton and Mermaid and does have a couple of EV charging spaces . An access door into the hotel and restaurant is at the side of the building to save the longer walk to main door at the front .

We had visited the Shrewsbury Hospital on Tuesday 23rd July and to cheer ourselves up we decided to visit the Mytton and Mermaid. We had tried to phone but got no answer and the on-line booking system showed no availability until much later in the day . We called in on the 'off chance' and found the restraunt relatively quiet with lots of vacant tables - although it did fill up somewhat later in the lump chime session. The staff were very helpful and supportive and quickly found us a table in a large glass ceiled square room just off the main entrance ( where the toilets are) .

The Mytton and Mermaid has a number of real ales on offer and I opted for half an average tasting Wye Valley Butty Bach ( £4.80 ) . My wife decided to risk a cocktail to lift her spirits and had a 'Dark and Stormy' - dark Rum and ginger ale - rather too gingery for my taste but my wife liked it .

We decided to have a soup as it had already been a long day with an early start .We had a mushroom and Tarragon soup very nice although rather too salty for my taste. I had a decent Chicken and Ham pie whilst my wife had a whole Plaice. My wife started to feel rough with the anaesthetic from her hospital visit wearing off and in severe pain we decided to make a rapid exit . The staff were really kind and found a lidded container for my wife to take the remaining cocktail home with her. The Mytton and Mermaid is not a cheap experience but it does feel 'special' - we look forward to trying it again under better circumstances for ourselves - a recommended relaxing experience.

We had a family wedding afternoon tea at the hotel, in the private function room for 16 people. The service was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble, the staff kept checking to make sure we were all happy and if we needed any top ups of drinks etc. the room was an excellent size to cater for us all. They had set the table up beautifully, the wedding cake was placed on the sideboard so the happy couple could cut the cake easily. The food was excellent and special care had been taken to ensure every one had what they had asked for and all dietary needs were addressed. Everyone had a wonderful time. Some of us had booked rooms for the night. They were out of this world, spacious beautifully clean, there was tea coffee hot chocolate, biscuits and bottled water in each of the rooms. An ironing board hairdryer slippers and dressing gowns were also included. In the bathroom there was not little samples of soap shampoo etc as you find in a lot of hotels, but full size bottles of shampoo ,soap and hair conditioner. Every guests needs were catered for. This hotel is the best I have ever stayed in and highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for quality and value for money.

We Arrived late afternoon on a Sunday, it was extremely busy with Sunday lunches and parking was minimal however we were met and welcomed by Martin in the car park who guided us to a space then into the hotel to our check-in point at the bar and carried my case through whilst giving us a lovely history of the hotel and church behind, he apologised that we would have a little wait to be checked in as all staff were busy but we didn’t mind, a big thank you to Martin. We stayed in the Junior suite (room 4) it was clean, very roomy and very comfortable and the road in the front was busy at certain times of day certainly did not disturb us, I’m not a fan of high rainfall showers but this had a hand held shower attachment but unfortunately it wasn’t able to stay in place so I hope this will be fixed (would have mentioned at checkout/ see later comment on checkout). Breakfast was lovely, no buffet and all cooked to order which we prefer, there were good choices however I was surprised that no porridge/ cereals were on offer, only yoghurt, fruit and granola, so I had the almond croissant it was delicious mind ( I personally don’t like yogurt) the lady that served us each morning was very pleasant and always welcoming, sorry don’t know your name but thank you. We ate two nights in the restaurant and enjoyed it very much (crispy beef salad was great) the staff we encountered were pleasant, welcoming and they all from what we experienced worked hard and never stopped as the hotel was very busy (half term) We checked out with the lady sitting at the bar ( well handed a key over) despite this young lady being pleasant enough and thanked us for the key she failed to to ask us if we had an enjoyable stay and if we were happy with everything or even say have a safe journey home ( which our breakfast server did) it’s the little things like this that go a long way especially when you’ve spent a lot of money for your stay. This however wouldn’t stop us returning as overall we did enjoy our stay in this lovely hotel and good location.

So it’s a mixed bag for me. I stayed for one night for work and the place is lovely. The greeting at venue was perfect. Although arriving at dinner time around 6pm on a Wednesday meant no parking and a little drive around their front and rear car parks was needed until I lucky found someone about to leave and nabbed their space; awkward but no real harm done and it shows how liked by the local community this place is.

Check in was at the end of the bar and simple. I was shown to room 5. It’s a large room with high ceilings, and lovely large comfy bed and views out over the front garden seating area and road/junction. Bathroom is en-suite shower well decorated with nice metro grey tiles and soft lino flooring (but all in-keeping with the theme of this modern take on old world meets up market theme.
Room had coffee machine, kettle with everything you need. And all is complimentary.
Two dressing gowns are in the wardrobes along with hairdryer and tea and coffee bits and bobs.

Now, the room itself, whilst lovely has a undulating floor which creeks in areas and a thin sash window (which is likely to be unable to be replaced due to planning restrictions) but hears lay my main gripe.
The noise for conversations around the main entrance or from the garden is a thing to contend with, however the music from the bar, which directly below you, along with ALL conversations from within the pub can be heard until closing time. I’d had such a day at work that I did that great British thing of laying there thinking I I do not have the energy to get dressed again and head down stairs to ask for another room (as I’m sure when I booked this was the last room available) but also, it will be quiet soon (a thought that was on loop every 10min from around an hour until just gone 11pm

Are in the restaurant and all was pleasant. Pork belly starter was nice, however the crackling that came with it was like biting into hard plastic. Bless the young server, who must have been new as this comment was met by a look of “oh no, I haven’t just received the standard “everying fine” what do I do”
The main was a crispy beef salad, a tad more beef would have been welcomed but that because I’m greedy and like more meat but it would have balanced the dish a little better.

I’d stay again but I would absolutely get a different room!

We were a group of four who had booked for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon and had a fabulous meal. Parking was initially a minor problem due to lack of spaces but there was an attendant on hand to find us somewhere.
Both dining rooms are lovely, comfortable and stylishly furnished, we were warmly welcomed and quickly seated before menus arrived then a drinks order (from a good choice of beer & wine) was taken.
Starters were lovely and mains were wonderful, my blade of beef was perfect and everyone else said their food was marvellous.
Service was great throughout, well paced and keen to help us enjoy our meal.
Overall a great experience as we have found in all of the Brunning & Price venues we have visited.
We will definitely return when next visiting Attingham Park (which is directly opposite).

We stayed for a night last night and were very impressed…. From the staff including Martin who was looking after the car parking area ( I’m sure he has more responsibilities though) to the room. It was all very good. The size of the pub ( feels wrong calling it a b+b pub it’s so much more) is huge but in a good way. Its decor is very tastefully done and well maintained. So reviewing from start to finish… we booked in at 3 o’clock and was shown to our room by a very pleasant and professional lady I guess may have been a manager of some kind. The room itself was room three and although a tiny bit small very tastefully decorated lovely bed and linen exceptional bathroom and great views over the bridge and Attingham Park I only little niggle the two Complementary packets of biscuits- someone had got to it before us I’ve just left the empty packet. You remember the little things isn’t it? Had an iron and ironing board lovely coffee maker, kettle and complementary coffees and teas. You need to remember when the room is to lock it it’s not like a lock that locks behind you when you leave. Settling in the room, we headed to the bar for a drink. Be warned it is a very popular location, but in fairness the business just adds to the atmosphere. At 7:30, we headed to the restaurant for dinner and was greeted by a very attentive and helpful host. Who in fairnes was just like everybody else we came in contact with.
Returning to the room later that evening We had a very comfortable and peaceful sleep. The next morning we had breakfast in the restaurant again very professional staff and excellent food-I couldn’t felt it if there was anyone that could find photo it would be me!

Thank you to the staff for making us welcome .

Fabulous afternoon:
Booked for afternoon tea with friends and we had a lovely time. Plenty of food all very well prepared except the scones, a bit well done!
The sandwiches were smoked salmon, ham and egg, all very tasty.
The cakes were over cooked scones with jam and clotted cream, lemon tart, chocolate cake, carrot cake and meringues.
There was also a quiche slice (with the pointy but cut off) and sausage roll slice.
A variety of teas available along with coffee and we indulged in a couple of bottles of Prosecco!
At Just under £25 for the afternoon tea it wasn’t too overpriced and we were able to sit out in the garden once we had finished.
There was some confusion when the bill arrived as we thought it had been paid for in advance when booking, this wasn’t made clear on the booking form and the waitress was insistent that they could not take money from the card details upon booking. However, it stated on the menu that ‘no shows’ would be charged £10 from their booking receipt? This needs to be made clear as one member of our group paid for us all on booking and we forwarded our money to her. It would save an awful lot of confusion.
The restaurant was tastefully decorated and the staff very pleasant.

We had a Sunday roast (both chose lamb) and ordered a Yorkshire each, cauli cheese & extra roast potatoes. The food was brilliant and we absolutely did not need the extra roast potatoes.

The downside of our visit was the service. We were seated promptly, had our orders taken and then left to our own devices. Once our food arrived, nobody checked back at the table to check the food was ok or if we needed more drinks (even though 1 glass was empty).

Our table was cleared away by 2 members of staff when we were finished and neither of them asked how the food was or if we wanted anything else. We did actually want a dessert and a coffee but we were not given the menu.

After sitting for about 10 minutes with 2-3 staff constantly stood facing our table (clearly able to see we were finished with everything) we had to ask for the bill. Thankfully there was no service charge automatically added as I would have asked to remove it.

It seemed that there wasn’t a clear dedicated person to serve us as we had 3 different staff members interact with us and maybe that’s why they missed checking on us etc. It’s a shame as the venue is perfect and the food is expensive enough to warrant better service.

Visited the Mytton & Mermaid yesterday on the recommendation of friends, so we had high expectations. We have to say the location is fantastic, nestled alongside the River Severn and the building itself and outside spaces are fabulous. However, very sadly the food was average. The Catalan bread starter was dry and very underwhelming. A dry slice of toasted bread, plain diced tomatoes and a thin slice of Serrano Ham draped on top. No dressing or small garnish to marry everything together. The Prawn and Crab Cocktail was basic. A couple of sprigs of lettuce, Prawns and some Crab meat in a Marie Rose sauce with two little flavourless jelly cubes on top that didn't enhance the dish at all. The mains were reasonably tasty but, again a bit disjointed. The shoestring fries are NOT fries. More like crisps and only add texture, no flavour profile. Less pea shoots for me! They offer nothing and are not pleasing on the eye! Unfortunately, there were no bananas on the waffles as they had run out, so we were given a pot of strawberries on the side with one stray raspberry in there. We appreciated the gesture but it felt like an afterthought and we were only told about the issue when our desserts were delivered to the table. We should have been advised sooner and asked if we wanted to order something else. The chocolate brownie was tasty but way too big and rich at the end of a meal with far too much chocolate sauce! Staff there are very friendly but service was slow. However, in all fairness, they were very busy. Excellent selection of Gins and beers/ciders in the bar. I really think this place is missing a trick. Locally sourced produce and a bit more thought regarding the menu and this restaurant would be phenomenal! You can tell from the food this premises is part of a chain. Reading the history of the property, it would have been nice to have seen some Portmeirion china dotted around as a nod to its former owner Sir Clough Williams Ellis. All in all, a wonderful ambience but based on the prices charged, the food could be so much better.

We stayed here for 1 night whilst passing through Shrewsbury. The room (Room One) was very nicely decorated with good quality fixtures and fittings. However the space in the room was very tight with little room for luggage and two people moving about! This ground floor room was also very noisy from both road traffic and pub guests.
The pub and restaurant area was lovely with lots of tables and the service at the bar was very good.
Car parking was a little tricky given we were overnight guests (perhaps a designated area may help) but there was a chap helping out guiding people where to park.
Breakfast was a little hit and miss - whilst the service was good, I've never had scrambled egg cooked in oil which made the breakfast dish inedible.
Would I stay here again? Probably not but was okay for a 1 night stay.

Sorry I can't say as it's not something we need to know. I didn't see any dogs in the hotel whilst I was staying but I am sure a quick call to the hotel (the staff are most helfpul) would answer your question.
