Very recommended hotel. The best in my personal opinion.
Room was huge and connecting room available as well for those with big family.

Overall love my stay here and will come back again if i visit Wen Chang.

Didn't expected much given we all know we've to put a discount on the star rating for hotels in China. However, it is a positive surprise this time.

The hotel has a huge lobby and clean. There's some problem during check-in (as they claim they can't find the booking info from Agoda), however, they are so flexible and allow us to check-in first while they are following up. Not the international 5-star type of services, but you can feel they are trying hard to help you in their local way.

The room is huge, and deco looks better than what we see in picture. Seems newly renovated and quite modern (in China's standard) and very clean. The bed is so comfortable and bathroom is huge. I'd good sleep there for 2 nights.

The did really followed-up closely with Agoda on my booking, and informed me later that night everything is ok.

Supermarket next to that with just 1 min walk. Small but have everything you need. Taxi to railway station is only <10 mins.

We stayed here 2 separate nights over our 5 days on beautiful Hainan Island. This is a typically large hotel (for China) in Wechang. Rooms were excellent, spotlessly clean and well maintained. I cannot start to its location, as we were with a tour group, yet my take on it was that the rate was most affordable, staff were very friendly, as $much as they could be, given that the English language was difficult for them. Friends, even you read this, just remember that almost without exception, their English is going to be better than our Chinese. Highly recommended.

As above is a bad place to stay, unless you don't mind the fellow;
1. no control of air con
2. no control of warm water in the bathroom (meaning only cold water)
3. room condition is poor (room 1318 was never clean at all, fill with ants in the bed, need to change room)
4. room safety is not there at all (e.g. been block off as shown in picture)

Only good thing is front desk (check in/out) they are fexable

Though some people may not agree but I think it is the best hoel in this quiet town. It may not be up to the 5 star standard that it claims but the staff here can be seen trying their best to improve their image! Take for example, after breakfast, the front desk manager has asked me if there are any areas for improvement. I think this hotel will go along way because of such dedicated staff.

Breakfast variety is not international style yet as most of the food is still catering to the Chinese community. There could be more ham and cheese and yoghurt instead of noodles and porridge. The coffee quality also needs improvement.

They should provide some English speaking staff if they are serious about going international here in the area of tourism. However, I think their room amenities are comparable to the 5 star hotels in Singapore and definitely better than those that we have stayed in Hong Kong. There is a mini bar fridge, kettle for making our own tea and coffee, iron and board, hair dryer and plenty of hangers. These are quite essential to travellers like me. :-)

Don't worry about not getting information because their staff are both courteous and helpful. The surroundings of the hotel is quite nice. My only gripe is that the tea shop in the hotel only sells a limited range of tea. Even the common pu-er tea is not available in the shop. This surprises me.t

Wenchang is a small sleepy town with limited tourism, save overseas Chinese who come to visit their ancestral homeland. With that background - one would understand why there isn't more tourism or amenities in this hotel/area. But Waika probably is the best Wenchang City hotel -- otherwise folks are staying out by the shore to take advantage of the beach.

The hotel itself is nice - with comfortable spacious rooms and the breakfast buffet was actually one of the nicest we'd seen in a Chinese hotel in China - with mainly Chinese food choices, but also some standards suitable to the Western palate. The fruit plate they gave us upon arrival was also a nice touch.

The hotel has a second adjacent building, where possibly more rooms are, but where the spa and other amenities are located. We checked out the spa for their very reasonably priced massages, since it opened late. I got a Shanghainese pedicure and my sister got one too, in addition to a massage. I opted out of the massage because they are done on hotel beds - which tend to bother my neck. She said her pedicure was not that great, while mine was fabulous. Her massage was decent and the post-massage bath was very comfortable, since it is in a very deep wooden tub.

In the main building is a salon that also seems to open rather late.

The location is very close to the train station - we paid 30 rmb for the 10 minute taxi, though I probably could have paid 20. There are also tuktuks that could do if you didn't have much for luggage.

We took a local bus for 1 rmb down to the city center, which was really interesting.

My biggest gripe is that the concierge is hardly a concierge. They don't seem to have any familiarity with the local tourist sites nor know how to arrange anything. Luckily for us, they have an EXCELLENT bellhop - I think his name was Huang, who arranged everything for us. We are so grateful for his help - and disappointed we did not get a chance to meet him (and tip him) again before we left our short one night stay. He realized our Chinese was not strong, so spoke slowly and carefully for us. He also listened to what we were looking for, and made arrangements that suited us the next day (a 500 RMB day long tour to many interesting cultural sites in the area -- which requires quite a lot of driving, btw). For our immediate arrival, he also pointed us to a good restaurant for the famous Wenchang chicken, and told us how to take aforementioned bus to the city center.

If you end up having trouble with any tourism issues - try to look for this amazing bellhop!

One more note - there is a great BOC ATM in the lobby - a sight for sore eyes when just about every ATM in Hainan only seems to take Unionpay!

This hotel proudly claims to be a 5 star one. I don't understand how it got that rating.

I will list the pros out first:

1. The rooms are new and spacious and nice. Bathrooms are also clean and spacious. The lobby also gives a good impression.

2. Housekeeping staff are helpful. So are the concierge staff.

3. Free wireless internet in the lobby.

Cons now:

1. Breakfast buffet may have variety but definitely not a 5-star standard one. The chef (the one at the noodle station) served a man who blatantly jumped the queue first and when confronted by me (female), just shrugged it off. Outrageous. What kind of 5-star service is this?

2. In which 5-star hotel in the world would you receive flyers advertising escorts and prostitutes stuffed under your room door??? Sleazy much?

3. Went to the sports room to play table tennis. The staff manning the area was clueless. He sat in the room with us and promptly fell asleep there. He also didn't know whether we had to pay to use the facilities. Clueless.

4. This 5-star hotel uses dispensers in the bathrooms to dispense soap and shampoo. No nice little bottles.

5. No free wireless internet in the rooms.

All in all, it is a nice hotel to stay in. Probably the best in Wenchang. Facilities are still new and room is spacious and comfortable Prices are also cheap, compared to Western standards..But the hotel doesn't deserve its 5-star rating/tag. A 4-star one at most.

Arrived at the hotel without booking, they managed to issue our group (7 rooms), maybe it was winter so there wasn’t high occupancy. The hotel is quite big with 48 rooms on level 7, considering Wenchang is not an extremely developed city, this hotel is one of the better one . Stayed in room 701 at the older wing, much to our delight this room is one of the two biggest on the level. Single bed was huge for one person to sleep comfortably. Toilet had a window of the view on the street (blinds provided), which was something interesting and different. Minibar (chargeable) is provided. 1 bottle of FOC plain water is provided.

Pros:
- Spacious room with two arm chairs provided
- Temperature control in the room, heater works well
- Free breakfast provided, spread is ok but starts only from 7am
- Pillow menu provided although we didn’t try it
- Supermarket located at hotel ground floor, convenient

Cons (except for the first pt, the rest are pretty minor):
- No hot water from the sink tap, quite disappointing especially it was winter. No issues with hot water in the shower
- Luggage rack is small, only can put one luggage.
- Toilet paper provided was not enough for one day/night, had to call to ask for another roll. No tissue in the room
- Shower head is attached, not flexible
- The toilet door of the room I have stayed still cannot be closed properly despite complaint to front desk
- Checking out takes time as they will send only 1 staff to check the rooms before processing your checkout. Be prepared to wait if they have multiple rooms checking out together

Went back to Wenchang with my family for Qingming Festivel back in late Mar. As my grandma was wheelchair bound, we needed a bigger space in the room so that it's easier for her to move around. They allowed us to view different rooms before proceeding with the check-in. The size of the executive room does varies so it will be good to let them know if you prefer a bigger room upon check-in. Chinese restautant at Level 2 serves pretty nice food.

Only down side would be the beds are a little too soft for elderly.

To be very honest, I don't have high expectations of hotels in China but Waika came as a lovely surprise.

Room was hotel-like, carpeted and all. The TV channels work; they even have CNN and HBO. Bathroom was spacious and came with a shower and bathtub. No stale smoke in the air. Staff, from concierge to housekeeping were polite and efficient. Only complain was breakfast. On the day of check out (we had to leave the hotel by 9am), we went down early for breakfast (7.30am; that's 1.5hours after it was supposed to have started) but the food were not ready. Everything came out in bits and pieces. What I don't get was, why we had to wait till 8.45am before we saw the bread? Surely, they were not baked on site (they weren't even hot when they came out, so nope)?

Location wise - there were a few restaurants across the road. A min-mart next to the hotel but if you want to shop (in Wen Chang? Seriously?), you got to take the Hainan's version of Bangkok's Tuktuk to the Old Street. Remember to bundle up in cold weather because the wind is icy! A one-way ride costs between RMB8-10; very affordable.

"The view on the high floor is good. I always asked to stay at the main instead of the annex building more from the convenience point of view as the restaurants and main desk is here. Dinner at the hotel restaurant is expensive. Just walk across the road to other restaurants or take a short bus ride downtown that cost just RMB 1 for some food and shopping. The bus stop is just opposite the hotel and when coming back the stop is just a little further down on the side of the hotel. Taking a train to this hotel is about 20 mins from the station near the Mei Lan airport. Taking a ride to and from the hotel via those tut-tut or motorised trishaw is only RMB10 per ride (not per person) for may be 3 people so long as all the people can squeeze into them and make sure to bargain with the driver."
