Detailed Reviews
Wonderful hosts, Robin and Dianne who made us feel so at home in their home. This Lodge was in a stunning location overlooking the Omaha beach in the far distance and the fields of Matakana.
Our room was perfectly comfortable and beautifully designed and decorated. The bed faced east and we could look out over the valley.
Dianne brought us a tray of wine and selection of nibbles including cheese in the evening which we enjoyed on the verandah.
Breakfast was perfect for us and what we would normally eat at home.
We should have booked for a longer stay instead of an overnight sleepover .

Our unit was private with a stunning view over rolling hills and cows - out to the ocean. There were moorporks, pheasants and cockateils. Great location close to Matakana and Leigh.
On arrival we enjoyed a glass of wine and cheese/crackers and the room was stocked with a loaf of beautiful fresh local bread, butter and spreads. A selection of cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt. Fresh juice, spiruina and tea/coffee.
Each morning fresh danishes were discretely delivered to our door with he Herald newspaper!
Fresh flowers were everywhere - even on the outdoor table and chairs. Honestly it was beautiful!
Bed was firm and comfortable. Stocked with everything you could need.

Stayed for only one night - wish it could have been longer. Lovely room with very comfortable bed and excellent outside space. We also had sole use of the sunroom, other than breakfast time. We sat outside and enjoyed the views for hours! Rob kindly booked us a table for dinner at the Matakana Market Kitchen which serves great food. Breakfast was served by Dianne who chatted with us and the other guests. Continental breakfast which was fresh and set us up for the day. This property is excellent and I would highly recommend it.

We were pleased to be able to make this booking as Matakana is very popular. The accommodation has a very pleasant view and you really feel like you are away from it all. The unit had everything one needed, and everything was of excellent quality. Everything was spotlessly clean and well kept.
Robin and Dianne are lovely hosts, who went out of their way to assist but privacy was respected. The continental breakfast was perfect and welcome drinks snd snacks on arrival also a lovely touch. Highly recommended.

We spent the weekend at Sugarloaf Lodge and highly recommend. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. The hosts Robin and Di so friendly and welcoming. We loved our breakfast in the sunny sunroom and the outlook is stunning. You could think you were anywhere in the world overlooking vineyards and out to sea. Treat yourself a weekend as less then an hour from Auckland.

We stayed here for one night, on our way to Paihia. When we had been there for a short while we wondered why why our agent didn't book is at least four days. There is a lot to do in the area and we wished we had the opportunity to explore. We were very fortunate to have stayed at this lodge. Much thought has been given to the guest accommodation. It is beautifully appointed, even down to the crockery and glassware available in the room. Breakfast was delicious. You will not be pestered by Robin and Diane, but you will be looked after discreetly, and hope to return one day.

I'm very sorry to say this was not value for money at $300 per night and it wasn’t even clean. There were runs down the outside of the toilet and the inside of the lid. The shower screen was not clean and the throw on the bed needed washing too.
We had taken some fruit and wanted to cut a melon but there were no plates or dishes.
There was no privacy as people kept dropping by and we were told to have breakfast in their kitchen where they stood watching over us making us feel very uncomfortable.
If you want to chill out and watch a movie for an hour don’t go here they have no SKY.
On the plus side the view was lovely, the bed comfortable and very quiet at night.
Overall we felt watched over and uncomfortable and won’t be going again.

We can only apologise for the cleanliness - we are generally most particular, but we have had the busiest summer in our existence although this should not be used as an excuse. The room has been completely stripped and cleaned again this morning. With regard to the lack of utensils, crockery and sharp knives in the room – we are not a motel, however in the past we have found that guests have been comfortable to ask for anything they need from crockery, extra cutlery, barbeques etc. We again apologise for that. For the lack of privacy – our format has been since we have been in business is to bring a platter of hors d’oeuvres and a couple of glasses local of wine to our guests in their room, at this point we ask what time and what they would like for breakfast; some guests like to chat at length at this point, some not. Breakfast is served in our house. The room is a living/dining/kitchen area. Again, our format since being in business is to chat to the guests at this point. We find they enjoy finding out about us, as we do about them. This is why, we understand, they have chosen to stay in a bed and breakfast rather than a motel or hotel. However normally we respect their desire for privacy and apologise if we didn't in your case. Regarding SKY – not we do not have SKY and as you will have noted it is not mentioned on our website, but we have a DVD machine, great restaurants and three fantastic cinemas in Matakana. We are sorry you found the experience disappointing. However some European guests who stayed the following night said Sugarloaf Lodge was the best B&B they had stayed in during their five weeks in New Zealand.

The only negative thing I can say about the Sugarloaf Lodge is that we only stayed one night. I would recommend two nights so that you can truly relax on the property. The two rooms are separate from the main residence and have their own entrance and parking area. The bed faces the view and the deck with tables and chairs were a lovely place to enjoy local wine and divine nibbles provided by Allan and Vanessa. That was a great way to start our evening. Allan had organised a taxi to take us to Plumes which was also very enjoyable. In the morning we had coffee on our deck before going up to the dining room for a beautifully cooked breakfast. Unfortunately we only had one night, it was such a lovely morning and it would have been nice to go back to our private deck, read the paper with a coffee and look at the glorious view. I also left my makeup behind and that arrived a day later by courier. Thank you so much Allan and Vanessa, we will definitely recommend your Lodge to our friends

This charming B&B was our first stop on our roundtrip in New Zealand in February. It turned out to be the perfect place. A little more than an hour drive from the airport in Auckland after the very VERY long flight from Europe we found ourselves relaxing in the beautiful countryside of Matakana. At the B&B the room was very comfortable and well equipped. A bonus treat was the “afternoon tea” which consisted of a glass of a local wine and a platter of locally produced snack food, to be enjoyed from the front porch where the view over the landscape was amazing. Last but not least, the service was both personal and utterly helpful. We got help with dinner bookings, advise on where to go wine tasting and also road advise combined with sightseeing tips as we were about to leave and continue our journey.
We highly recommend this B&B and would love to revisit it, should we have the opportunity to go to NZ again!

Hi Frederik and Carola Sorry to have taken so long to respond to your very kind review, but better late than never! We were so pleased to welcome you to New Zealand at the beginning of your trip which we hope continued well after you left us. It will be getting colder and darker in Sweden now, as we move towards summer, although it has been very wet and windy here! Best wishes to you both Allan and Vanessa

We stayed here as one of our many hotels/bed and breakfasts on our trip to new zealand. What a hidden gem. It was absolutely stunning and had so many special extras- heated floors and towel warmer, rain shower head, etc. The host was very accommodating as well, providing us with snacks and breakfast, as well as local recommendations. Very pleased!
