Detailed Reviews
As first-timers to Bali wanting a bit of surf and a bit of peace and quiet, Bali Starling Homestay fits the bill perfectly. The place itself is down a little lane and away from shops, main roads and the general madness of Seminyak and Kuta, although Seminyak is an easy scooter ride away. Canggu may eventually become the new Seminyak, but for now, it's on the edge between urban and countryside.
There are cafes and warungs in all directions, ranging from the wonderful vegetarian fare at Green Ginger Noodle Restaurant to crusty French bread at Monsieur Spoon at the intersection for Batubolong and Echo beaches. Great coffee everywhere, including at Bali Starling.
Therapy is the place for a massage at Echo Beach, a five minute bike ride away. We had the Panel Beater massage twice.
Lolak Surf School, very close by, has good surf instructors, although don't rely on texting to communicate with anyone. Much safer to use facebook chat as telecommunications seem a bit haphazard.
The complimentary use of the Canggu Club is great too - nice pool, food, and a fully equipped gym just in case you feel like a workout.
The homestay is under new ownership but fear not, the excellent breakfasts continue and Beryl is a more than worthy successor for Mike, who spectacularly failed to give her any of the details of our arrival or to organise any of the things he said he would. She put all of this right within our first morning and was an unfailingly helpful and generous host. (memo to Mike: disappointing performance for a guy who presumably marketed the homestay for sale on the basis of the very high service ratings on Tripadvisor - a very unfair situation to leave Beryl in, but one that she rose to brilliantly).
Thanks Beryl and J for a great stay. Bali Starling was exactly what we were after. P.S. - it's not only spotlessly clean and friendly, but also very reasonably priced.

We stayed here back in October. We originally stayed for a couple of nights at the beginning of our trip, loved it so much and came back for a few more nights at the end of our trip.
The house is amazing and the guestrooms are very comfortable and very clean. Mike and his wonderful hospitality also lend to the easy going and relaxing atmosphere. Mike also was the man behind the freshly cooked breakfasts each morning - delicious! Quite a few different things to choose from as well, and freshly made while you sit up in their lovely lounge overlooking rice paddies etc.
Having access to the Canggu club was an unexpected perk of being here and we ended up spending more time here than we would've thought :P
Canggu itself was away from the busy streets of Seminyak etc .. traffic on the roads is very light, it's easy to walk to the Canggu club and to the beach (10 - 20 min).
It was such a lovely stay and we'd be happy to stay again for sure. Thanks to Mike and his family (and their cute puppy) for their wonderful hospitality!

We had a great stay: other than the beautiful, fresh room and very tasty breaky, Mark is a superb host who shares great tips and insights about the area. I also loved the communal dining table - great travel chatting at breakfast.

Stayed there for three days. I had a very large room which was in great condition, everything worked and the couple running it were very helpful and friendly. The homestay only has 4 rooms, thus it is a very layback place with a view of cows, padis, bananas etc.
While there is no pool or many services avaialble, membership to the Canguu club was fine. It is a 20 min walk or short taxi ride and has grat gym, pools, playing fields etc.
The breakfast area also functions as a lounge room and you can sit around it at night havinig a drink and chatting away.
The location will not suit everyone if you do not have a car or bike as it is 20 mins from the beach and there is little to do immediately around the homestay. But if you don't want the noise and chaos of Kuta it is fine.
Definitely recommended.

If you are in Bali for the first time, it might be difficult to find, I admit. But for me everything was. Just because roads and buildings are completely different than at home. So if you have a mobile phone, be prepared, get the right numbers before and call and ask for help. Berryl our host is almost always reachable.
And if not, than there is the whiteboard. If you want a massage, you put your time wish on the board and the lady comes. Even if you might not have gotten a confirmation. Just relax. What you should do anyway as you are on vacation :-)
Rooms are spacious, also baths. Cleaning was done every day.
On the German Website there was one thing that was misleading. There is no daily cooked dinner. We had dinner together on special occasions. But when many good restaurants (8EUR) and warongs (1 EUR!) are close by, who cares. I enjoyed my breakfast with fresh fruits. Several variants are available. Simply ask.
As for the surfing, the guides are really warm, with a good heart and created a good atmosphere. Also pointing out where to sit and wait for the waves was very helpful. Longsleeve rashguards and zinc sun protection was provided and proved very important. And when they say to the girls to protect your bum, you should listen... The sun can be a bit merciless.
The yoga teacher acted as deputy camp mother. She was almost always around, went out with us and if needed adusted the yoga lessons to our time planning. Classes where small so you get enough attention and correction. Great!
I met many very nice people there and have really nice memories.

This was the start of our honeymoon. It was quite challenging to find the place even our driver had to make several wrong turns to finally reach there. I would suggest to have more signs to direct guest towards the location. We had a late flight in and only managed to arrive at night. Mike was really thoughtful preparing instructions to help us check in late at night. We love the spacious bathroom really a joy to experience. The room was simple and cozy. The wonderful bit came the next morning. We were greeted to a lavish lounge that had an open view to the green plantation. It was a breadth along sight. The best part was breakfast. Mike came up to greet us and gave us the option of breakfast. I had his muesli granola option and it was delicious. His mix of seeds and nuts coupled with Greek yogurt really made it a special selection. It was the best muesli granola I have ever had. Thank you Mike for making it such a delightful stay. Looking forward to a longer stay in the future.

I recently stayed 10 nights at Bali starling, and was very happy. It is a 3 minute scooter ride to the beach, as the location provides for a very quiet atmosphere. Mike provides an A+ breakfast and coffee every morning, along with a plethora of local knowledge about the island to help plan your day, arranging anything for your needs, including scooter rentals or taxi rides. It was a 10 minute ride down to Seminyak for our shopping needs, and every time we ventured down there, we were happy we chose to stay where we did, as the traffic and congestion is insane in those areas. We were also able to take a very nice scooter ride to Tanah Lot and Ubud from this location. If you are here to surf, you are only a few minutes from the wedgy peaks of Canggu. Highly recommended.

Mike is a great host.
Hands on with everything!
Made us a fantastic simple breakfast and gave us a map with the best spots to checkout in the area for cafes.
Awesome price for a very clean, modern B&B in Canggu.
Will be back to explore the area more on our next visit!

I was in Bali for four months and after staying at B S for the first time whilst travelling the island, I ended up booking a room once every week for the remainder of my time in Bali. The owners were lovely and really made me feel welcome; helping with anything they could (and even catching the occasional spider). I stayed in 3 out of the 4 rooms and all were super comfy and clean with good bathrooms, air-con, TV's + DVD players. The breakfasts for me were a highlight. I am a Coeliac so cannot eat gluten and Mike kindly tailored the menu to accommodate my allergy. Everything is home-made, all is fresh and it came with a PROPER coffee (I highly recommend the Latte) so it made a fab start to the day. It was near to the coast and was about 3 mins away from an excellent surfing beach. They were able to accommodate my surfboard over night which was very helpful. The WIFI was fast, it was a sociable atmosphere and for me, was over-all a really lovely experience. I highly recommend this place...you feel at home even though you might be far away. Thank you Bali Starling!! If I return to Bali I'll definitely be returning here as well!

I have never been good at following through and writing reviews of the numerous places I have stayed in the past but I make an exception now. Moving to Bali knowing it was going to be my home for the next few years and the uncertainty that comes from such a big change was quashed by Mike and Marcella and their gorgeous homestay. They are fantastic hosts who have mastered the fine balance of good conversation and knowing when to give you privacy. The breakfasts are phenomenal, I did not have a favourite and wished I stayed longer to go through all the choices twice over. The homestay is a perfect combination of hotel quality but with the comforts of home. Large, bright and extremely clean rooms. While I walked everywhere, Mike did offer to help arrange transport alternatives even assisting me himself after checking out and heading to my next destination. Mike also gave me some tips on great places to eat that were delicious and reasonably priced. Marcella gave me the privilege of seeing their gorgeous two month old baby daughter everyday. A wonderful family, a fantastic homestay and I wish you guys well for the next phase of the business. Semoga sukses selalu.
