Situated on a scenic bluff overlooking beautiful Golden Bay, Farewwell Spit and the town of Collingwood, Heron's
Rest combines the best of the "homestay" New Zealand experience with the many attractions of the outer Golden Bay area. Fine, if limited, restaurants, trips to the Spit, quaint (if only just a little weird attractions like a cafe situated 'way out in the countryside featuring tanned possum products), horseback tours and the best of the bucolic South Island lifestyle. The hosts are so welcoming and such genuine salt of the earth types; went for walks with us on the beach and invited us to Christmas dinner with their family-- so quintessetially New Zealand in its warmth-- that I would enjoin any and everyone to stay with them to enjoy a similar experience.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Heron's Rest, Collingwood, Golden Bay and would highly recommend both Collingwood and Heron's Rest as an ideal spot to explore Golden Bay. Angus and Maureen made us extremely welcome and even before our arrival helped us with advice and a booking for the Cape Farewell Lighthouse Trip. The accommodation is self contained and private and has lovely views over the inlet and bay. The cottage is original 'retro" and is spotlessly clean, with lovely linen and towels etc and we had a generous and delicious breakfast provisions delivered each day. We ended up eating in as my husband had caught lots of salmon at the salmon farm so we didn't sample the local hotel for dinner.

We stayed here for 4 nights. We booked a few months ago but found that new owners had taken over so from the previous reports had big shoes to fill. Found the place small especially since we were a family of 4 (2 teenage girls). The kitchen and bathroom especially were tiny and cramped. The views were great amongst the trees towards the ocean and looking down onto the village. Just a note you are in the trees so going out at night you might come across the local Wetas (which we did). But overall enjoyed our stay. I wouldn't recommend the pub for a meal extremely expensive and food awful.

During our New Zealand trip we stayed 2 nights at Heron's Rest. The cottage is quite spacious, clean and has all you need to spend a great time. Breakfast is available for 10 NZD extra per person and was freshly prepared as well as delicious. The hosts are wonderful and very warmhearted! They help you with everything you need.
The bathroom in the cottage was quite small but absolutely okay for 2 nights. The interiour is maybe a bit too vintage for our taste. However, the optional outdoor bathtub is a pretty cool feature, which we haven't had yet anywhere else.
If you are looking for tranquility and nature, this will be a great spot.

My partner and I recently spent one night at the Heron's Rest after doing the Farewell Spit tour. The accommodation was clean, comfortable and private. The outside bath under the trees was a real treat. Maureen was a lovely hostess with a great sense of humour (sadly we missed out on meeting Angus!) We will definitely need to return and stay longer, and will highly recommend to friends. Just a short walk from Collingwood but so quiet and peaceful.

We had a truly relaxing stay in the beautiful cottage, so quiet and peaceful surrounded by trees and close to the beach. Angus was the perfect host and his home made breakfasts are unbelievable. His knowledge and advice on what to do and see in the area was a great bonus, we did some amazing walks that we would have otherwise missed. thank you for giving us a place that enabled us to get rid of all the stress.

We stayed for 2 nights in this very peaceful region. The cabin was beautifully located and private. Very nice deck with a view to the sea, nicely decorated and with a great big outdoor bathtub amid the trees and the birds. The host were very welcoming and allow you as much privacy as you want while being very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very nice as well and can be had in the cabin or in the main house. This was probably our most enjoyable stay in all of NZ. Thank you!

Communciation prior to arriving was great and we were made to feel very welcome. The studio room was private, plenty of space, clean and tidy and the view lovely. The breakfasts were fantastic: One morning we had breakfast in our room, the second morning in the house, where we enjoyed having a chat with our hosts.
We mountain biked the heaphy track while we were in Collingwood and Heron's rest was very convenient for this. Angus and Maureen also let us leave our luggage at the studio while we were biking, which was really handy.
We enjoyed our stay so much that we have already booked to go back at New Year!

Friends recommended Heron's Rest to us,very glad they did, very good indeed. We had a lovely bedroom with a deck outside. Maureen and Angus are well travel people so our conversations were wide ranging. Very good breakfast which, including Maureen's homemade muesli, very nice. The hosts share the table with you so good conversation is assured. We had a fish and Chip dinner with them 1 night.of course a glass or 2 of wine both nights. Went to the Mussel Inn the other night.Went to the Farewell Spit Lighthouse, which did not grab us as we expected.( Not sure why this was ) Some other places in the area excited us more.Wharariki Beach for one. Wish we had more time there.
Thank you Maureen and Angus for a lovely time, hope we can visit you again in the future.

We stayed in The Cottage at Heron’s Rest. This would have to be one of the best accom options in Collingwood. Immaculate and private with a nice view above the village and bay. Judy is a great host…welcomed us with drinks on arrival. Highly recommended.

"The Cottage: Peace, quiet, a cocoon of greenery, all kinds of space, plus a 2nd room for our "stuff". Looks over the ocean, plus a huge bath hot-tub hidden in the foliage a dozen steps downhill. Is surrounded by trees and bountiful flower and vegetable gardens, on a hillside."

"The cottage does sleep 4 but we would have hated to have been more than 2 people as our large overseas suitcases totally took over the seperate small twin bedroom - size wise it was fine for 2 people for 3 nights - 4 people would have been too squeezy for us and the bathroom is fine but small."
