Westhaven Lodge is a unique place. The small hotel (7 or 8 guest rooms) sits atop an elevated peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and Whanganui Inlet, a tidal basin, with expansive, spectacular views of the inlet. The lodge has large, well-appointed guest rooms with luxurious bathrooms, and huge heated indoor pool. While there is no gym, the property features a half dozen hiking trails which will leave your leg muscles more sore than any stairmaster or treadmill. The property itself stretches over the entire peninsula, so guests can hike to both ocean beaches and the inlet. In addition to hiking, activities include surf fishing in the inlet, kayaking and, apparently for some parts of the year, hunting for wild pigs.

Monica and her family run the hotel, live onsite and make you feel like a treasured guest. The service is great and the food is spectacular. Meals can be made to order; my wife had her own custom meals prepared to her liking. We spent 2 weeks in NZ and all of our best meals were at Westhaven.

The plus and minus of the lodge is its isolated setting. The nearest commercial airport (Nelson) is ~3 hours away, with the last hour of the drive on a narrow, winding gravel road (4WD vehicles recommended). The nearest town of any size is at least an hour away. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place for you. If you want to go out to restaurants and bars, you are better off elsewhere. We were traveling with 3 teenage boys who loved the lodge for the 3 full days we spent there, but who would have been bored if we stayed a week.

The occasion was our Wedding Anniversary, a final gift to my wife of fifty four years.
Everything others say is true. But there is more. Bruno, the two Monikas and Tomas have invested their lives in Westhaven Retreat and, in the process, they have made a Holy Place, a thin place, where it is entirely appropriate to remove your shoes at the door.
If, like me, you still need to reach out to the Other and are wearied by the inane chatter of our contemporary world, you could do no better than to seek out the healing touch of Westhaven Retreat. Whatever it costs.

We had three wonderful nights at Westhaven Retreat and only left the grounds once - for the excellent walk up Knuckle Hill and the view over the inlet. The walk to South Head was special. Host were extremely welcoming, food was outstanding. Swimming pool, spa, and sauna were excellent. The views from the lodge were stunning.

West Haven Luxury Lodge, West Hell is more like it. In addition to meeting this lovely three generation family, you may stay in a well-appointed beautiful lodge, and yes, the views are quite pretty. What is not clear on the nicely produced website are a few important details.
The road to this place is a nightmare of hairpin turns, on gravel, sometimes with a single lane and oncoming cars. If you book this lodge, fly in, or forget it! Don’t be fooled by the professional photographs either, the beach is a very long hike down from the lodge.

When booking, there is a lower priced “cottage” option, which we thought was part of the lodge, but be forewarned, it is NOT! Really, it looks like a converted garage, or perhaps it was temporary housing for the family while they built the lodge. My husband booked us into the cottage and somehow the booking came through as only one guest. Monica was sweet enough to bring an extra set of threadbare towels and explained she’s adding my stay to the bill. Fair enough. This dated, musty cottage (complete with plastic plants and very dated decor) was SUCH a disappointment. We traveled extensively throughout the north and south Island and stayed in at least 10 different accommodations, all similarly priced. West Haven was the only one that was a disappointment.
It was not clear that once we arrived, food could not be ordered…and there is no place to buy food. Monica senior was kind enough to whip up an amazing, delicious meal for two, and we appreciated it but there was no option. We had to pay whatever they wanted to charge us, and both Monicas told us repeatedly what an inconvenience it was; wow, way to make your guests feel bad! Lastly, nowhere on the website did it say that we would not be allowed to go into the Lodge. The only time we were allowed to even enter the Lodge was to pay our bill. Monica wouldn’t even let us carry our dinner plates to the deck to enjoy the view. There were no other guests staying there, so what difference would it have made? Of course, we also were not allowed to step foot near the pool or hot tub, and by the look of all they toys scattered around, that was exclusively for the use of their children.
The property is pretty, but really it is a sheep ranch with few llamas thrown in. Monica’s husband works hard to maintain the animals and the property, but his early morning ride on tractor is rather a rude awakening. Oh, and the torn screens allow endless flies to come in, so perhaps they could provide guests with a fly swatter. Last but not least, Monica-used old shampoo bottles, really?
In summary, if you can afford the Lodge, fly in and out but above all, do not stay in the cottage.

Response from monika v, Manager at Westhaven Luxury Lodge
Responded 6 Jan 2014
Dear Madam, I am so sorry you felt this way. Your husband was not fully informed (did not read thoroughly) about the road, which is described in detail, with photos on the webpage and in directions we especially sent to you. The road is SAFE and very well maintained. It is regular School Bus Route. When you arrived, you were under the impression you had booked a room at the Lodge for $210. While you were here, we both established you DID NOT READ the description of the Cottage on the Agoda Website!!!!! It clearly states the cottage is a completely separate to the Lodge. Lodge Rooms cost $1080, so there must be a difference between Lodge guests, who pay for luxury accommodation, the use of the pool, spa, sauna and all meals. We understand this made you disappointed, but we took the best of care of you and cooked you a lovely 3 course dinner for only $64. We never overcharge!!!! For the one night stay you booked, you found many horrible and INCORRECT statements about Westhaven and the Cottage. One of the many criticisms you are correct about are the broken fly screens and you are right, they look ugly and are ineffective. We will be repairing/replacing them. We do hope you enjoy A HAPPY NEW YEAR and again we are sorry you did not see how special Westhaven is, like the hundreds and thousands of other guests before you.

Spa and pool not working and unfortunately we weren't made aware of this when we booked. Rooms were nicely decorated and bed very comfortable, but they desperately need a small fridge so that guests can at least have a drink in their room, as well as avoiding the long life milk pottles. This place is a work in progress with a lot to complete, so don't expect top notch, which the prices are.

What an amazing part of the world. My husband and I spent 3 nights at Westhaven and it was the absolute highlight of our 16 day holiday around New Zealand. We had a private beach to ourselves for one of our days with a picnic lunch made for us by Monika, one of our beautiful hosts. Westhaven has the most fantastic walking and driving tracks you will ever come across. We could not fault anything, from our room to the meals, you will never go hungry, and the service was incredible. A big thank you to this great family for making us feel part of it, if only for a short while, was very hard to leave. We will be back and definitely longer next time. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

We have just returned from a fabulous three nights at this magnificent retreat. There is simply nothing not to love about staying at Westhaven The peace and tranquility is just amazing The property is breathtaking with its many stunning walking tracks ,some to cliff top mountains with panoramic views and others to pristine private beaches .The meals are excellent and prepared with love , you'll never go hungry. There are many activities on offer or you can just soak up mother nature at its best. Monica ( Mum) and Monica (daughter ) are just the best hosts you could wish for ! They are great people and make you feel welcome at all times . If you are considering staying here, consider no more just do it.The only downside was leaving. We look forward to our next stay. Thanks for everything Simon & Claudia

After the drive, which is beautiful but with a few kilometres of winding grave roads you will arrive at Nirvana. The views of and from the lodge are breathtaking. The scenery around the 1000 acre property is totally awe inspiring that you could literally spend days exploring. The interior of the lodge is truly a work of art with lots of local stone and wood used throughout. The interior of the suites are decorated with a very fine eye for detail and the finest finishes and fixtures. The indoor spa area is wonderful with a full swimming pool and jacuzzi. Massage services are available upon request.

The meal package which is a must, (no other dining options around) includes 3 meals a day, picnic lunch is available. The food was very good, especially the in-house smoked salmon, and roasted tomato soup. Chef Tony is top notch!

Monica, Bruno, Monica, and Thomas are wonderful hosts and will make your stay very enjoyable.

If you have an electric car no worries, they have a charging station. Bear the lodge dog likes a scratch behind the ears if you get a chance.
