Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The host was very welcoming when we arrived & showed us all we needed to know in order to settle in. We stayed in the Garden Cottage. The place was spotlessly clean, the bed comfortable & the heater most welcome at this time of year. It was great to be able to cook in the kitchen nook though we were worried about the hob having no extractor to remove moisture or cooking smells - it was a little too chilly to leave the door open. Two suggestions: a compost bucket for food scraps & a box of tissues would be useful. We would recomend this place & aim to return some day.

Sylvie was fantastic, heard my bike lobbing up so came straight out and moved a car so I had a flat area to park on, real milk provided as well, extremely attentive. large room, all mod cons, old fashioned so so tidy. Well enough impressed as I only spent 1 night here to stay here for 3 nights next year, as hopefully I will be back in NZ next summer to ride around some more

Awesome little cottage! Used to be the police station! We had a lovely room - very clean and tidy and had everything we needed - great bathroom, dining area and the bed was super comfortable. Host was very helpful as to places to go and how to get there. We loved our stay and will definitely visit again!

A very pleasant place to stay with helpful hosts who made great suggestions on which local attractions to visit. Great value and very clean with a great location and a beautiful garden. First time we have spent a night in a police station (approx. 120 years old)@

We spent 3 nights in one of the front rooms, which had small but good kitchenette. Right in town. Friendly owners, they can book the Farewell Spit tour for you too. We would defiantly stay there again

We had 4 nights at The Station House whilst we explored Farewell Spit and surrounding region in this top corner of the South Island. Collingwood is a small place, and The Station House is perfectly sited in the middle, within short walking distance (50 metres) to the main street. We had the Garden Cottage, with a small sunny backyard and garden area full of fruit trees. We found the bed comfortable, we used the cooking facilities in the room, and found it usefully appointed with shelves and places to put things (too often we find motel rooms look great but have insufficient places to put things when we unpack). Parking is right outside. We did find the neighbours a little noisy when they departed early in the morning, and the WiFi wasn't too good in the evenings (presumably the bandwidth doesn't support the kids and other guests at peak times), but these were minor annoyances. The owner was very friendly and helpful, and we had great weather for our stay. We'd love to stay there again.

We stayed for one night, with our two children (aged 8 and 12) and we all loved it. The owners were very kind and our youngest enjoyed playing with their child. The garden setting was lovely and it was a very peaceful, relaxing place to stay. Very handy (a quick walk) to the beach and shops.

This one is hard to review. We booked the family garden cottage to allow us more space . Our stay was 2 nights. Location was great a short walk to the little township and great spot to explore the area right up and around farewell spit. Agree with other reviews about the character of this motel but a few things made it less about character more about wear and tear. Couch bedding etc needs updating with holes in the couch and was a bit musty and sagging The outdoor area is a small decking that sits in the owners garden .. they live in the house on site and it was a busy time for them so it was quite full on...not quite the quiet garden we thought it looked like when we booked.I guess in way that this motel felt more like an airbnb rather than a motel.Having said all this and stating that it really was not a great place for us it does have aspects about it that some have and will enjoy .

The motel is the old former historic police station and gives this place plenty of character. Room was very comfortable and nicely decorated keeping in style of the building. Very, very clean. Owners were very pleasant with a very warm and friendly welcome. Highly recommended as a base to explore the surrounding area including Farewell Spit and the start of the Heaphy Track. The Station House is minute’s walk to good cafes, the couple of restaurants in Collingwood and small museum focussing on the local history. A place for three or four nights stay rather than overnight.

Loved our stay here... should have stayed longer. Warm, comfortable, great shower and bed. If the walls could talk what tales they could tell of a by-gone era. Peaceful and quiet. The family lived behind us and we loved their son, Leroy's energy and enthusiasm.👏👏 But, when evening came and early morning, not a sound. 🤫🤫 So nice to feel part of the family. Put it on your list to visit. Highly recommend. Coffee and eats at the Courthouse Cafe delicious. Dinner at the hotel wonderful. Enjoyed muchly the museum and a big walk around the town. We will be back.Thank you Leroy, family and Collingwood
