Stayed here one night in a double room and wish it would have been longer. Although there are only shared bathrooms, this was one of my favorite accommodations of my NZ trip. It is an atmospheric old house with a nice common room and a spacious kitchen. It has a lovely view of the harbor and the owners are absolutely charming people who seem to enjoy nothing more than talking to their guests and providing travel advice. Breakfast is included and was also good. Also, they are one of the few hostels that offer free WiFi (you get a voucher for Zenbu). My only suggestion would be that they get a carpet for the floor because you could hear every step, but otherwise: perfect!

This place was perfect. Two girls looking for relaxing and chilling out. The house is clean and tidy. We stayed in a lovely separate unit, shared facilities in the main house. The couple running it were happy to chat and help with anything they could. Other guests were mature and friendly. Would have loved to have stayed longer. Family and children friendly

This is a great backpackers accommodation. Nice rooms, clean bathrooms, wooden floors and a nice outside deck with fab views. Free kayaks to use in the beautiful lagoon. Very helpful hosts. They will organize transport to/from Brown Hut if you intend to walk the Heaphy Track. You will have a relaxing and comfortable stay. Recommended.

We were greeted by the friendliest dog in the world whose owner was also super friendly. She introduced us by name to everybody staying at the hostel as she showed us round and was also great help when I later locked our car keys in the car (doh!). The hostel is a lovely old wooden house with big rooms well decorated, bit chilly at night due to the style of build but plenty of extra blankets available. Lots of clean bathrooms, comfy chill out room & good sized kitchen diner. Collingwood is a gorgeous wee place and the Gold Coast is stunning-wish we had more time to explore!! Thank you Somerset House!

Somerset house in Collingwood is a fine old house with a stunning, varnished wooden floor, carefully looked after by Chris and Hiromi the hosts. Both gave us a warm and personal welcome and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, even providing parkas for the rainy Farewell Spit bird excursion. The free breakfast was great with homemade bread, and other typically NZ touches. The kitchen area was spotless and our room for two was large and airy with plenty of space. Great views from the garden and very close to the Collingwood milk bar, fish and chips and hotel. In all, the very best three-night stay, with many suggestions from Chris as to activities, logistics and routes. If you are out that way, Somerset house should not be missed.

Wow i loved this place. A lovely cross section of people with regards to age - not a party hostel at all, but a place to meet great people travelling and interested in the like! Chris and Haromi run a wonderful place, which is spotlessly clean and they serve free breakfast which they actually have with you every morning - so special. When you arrive at the hostel they introduce you to the other travelers which was so great - after 3 days you felt like you had been there for ever - highly recommened especially for people travelling alone and wanting to meet people older than 25!!! I would definately be back and recommend it to everyone, which i have done!

The hosts are very active in the management of this hostel for mature guests and everything is clean and tidy. Chris and Hiromi are also welcoming and friendly and experienced people in their own right. The only negative was the pillows were uncomfortable

Took the Golden Bay coach from Nelson to Collingwood and this backpackers is a couple of houses up the hill from the bus stop. Chris introduces me to the other guests (remembering most names) and then rented his own car to me at a cheap rate so I could get to Cape Farewell and Wharariki beach at sunset. That’s well worth doing!!
I had a small separate unit which was great value. A well-equipped kitchen; eggs from their own hens plus bacon (to be cooked by me) set me back a whopping $3.50 and were delicious.
Chris is the local dentist and a beekeeper, and they are genuinely interested in their guests’ activities, so there is lots to talk about.
Lovely hosts and a lovely place.

This was a clean, small and friendly hostel. We had a small cabin which was warm and spacious. Shared bathrooms but clean and never busy. Close to beach and lovely views. The owners were so friendly and really wanted to help, it wasn't just a job, they wanted you to make the most of the area.

Relaxed atmosphere, charming wooden pavilion style building amid prolific veg gardens, breakfast ingredients supplied including eggs, shared rooms, OK for family but kind of crowded for singles. Showers & washing machines available. Handy for walks along Golden Bay.
