Promised a lot delivered ok. Small cabins, well built, great shower, comfortable bed. Great hospitality nice meal, so so atmosphere reminded me a little of school dining room, we all ate together at long tables. New staff not great chefs, but meal was ok. Views are amazing, the only place to stay if you don’t want to ride 60k. Very expensive.

We biked from Kumara to Cowboys Paradise on a very wet day. The ride down into Cowboy's Paradise from the trail is a downhill with some switchbacks and through some very nice bush so that was a good way to arrive (vs uphill, if you had come from Hokitika direction). We were keen to get out of wet gear and were able to hang our gear on the wash line under our verandah. We had a lovely modern, carpeted, and warm ensuite room with a heater provided, separate shower, toilet and comfy bed. We had a delicious buffet meal which was served at 7pm for all guests. Mike and his staff were really friendly and we had some great conversations with the other guests that were also staying the night. There are board games or magazines also. The generator was on till about 1-2am and then switched off till morning. The noise didn't really bother us as it's essential to have power. Breakfast was either continental or cooked which provided a good start to another day of riding ahead. If you are passing through, definitely stop for hot chips and tomato sauce and a drink as a minimum or stay the night, have a chat to Mike and the other riders! This stop definitely adds to the West Coast Wilderness Trail experience.

We were a party of 25 - taking up all the rooms - even those that were still unfinished! For those in the new suites all was good with their ensuites, carpeted floors, etc - the rest if us did ok but had to go outside to use the communal ablution block as our rooms had yet to be visited by a plumber.

Still no one complained because we all got a good nights sleep after a traditional kiwi feed and plenty of beer and wine - next mornings continel breakfast at 9 was good - plenty of food for everyone.

Worth another visit in a few years once the cash flow allows them to complete the building and it stops looking like a building sute.

The good news was we had a clean and comfortable room, and the food prepared by the overseas workers was good. However things around the place are a bit random and unfinished. The heating "tripped", the hot water went off for a short time, and the generator is turned off at night. There is nowhere to hang damp clothing or dry wet shoes (on the wet coast!) - a few hooks and other practicalities would make a lot of difference. This place has so much potential but I don't know if it will change a lot. As yet I wouldn't call it good value for money. No internet is fine - the views are great and its good to see people talking to each other instead of heads down on their phones. A great bike ride, so be prepared - bring extra clothing, a torch and some patience!

Mike is an absolute one of a kind. The food was amazing and the room was lovely and clean. I’d definitely go back to be entertained by Mike, he made our holiday. If you’re after a polite PC host then don’t go here, but if you’re after a real experience he will have you laughing for hours , loved our stay !
