i must say I found the hotel rather basic upon arrival with the bathroom in particular being due for a facelift. Room had windows, but they open facing a wall. The fridge also disconnects when you leave the room, so it was basically useless.
On the positive side it was clean, quiet, staff was friendly and location is great for both a nice spot on the beach and sufficiently far away from the loud nightlife, although it was still an easy walk. Would return!
We stayed here for 5 nights (2 people). As mentioned in other reviews, this place is absolutely perfect for travellers on a budget looking to stay somewhere CLEAN and close to the action with amazing, kind and beyond helpful staff. Our room was impeccably cleaned every day while we were out. Though the accommodation was quite basic, it was good quality and well maintained. There was a DVD player in the room which was a godsend when one of us fell sick and it was raining out. The guesthouse is one minute walk from the main "strip" and about 20 mins walk from Ark Bar and the big party scene. The true thing that set this place apart though was Anna. Penzy (runs Penzy guesthouse and Sunny Guesthouse--they are connected) was out of town for a family emergency and Anna took care of every single need. From getting us a discount on a day trip to taking care of laundry to lining up a motor bike and helping us map a route. She was there every hour of the day and always had a smile and positive energy for us. This is the epitome of Thai hospitality and if I had a choice to stay here again, I would. Definitely recommending to family and friends who visit Samui!
The rooms were nice, everything was pretty basic, but there was a fridge, which was probably the highlight of the room. It was pretty annoying that we had to turn the AC off every time we left the room, meaning that we always came back to a humid and stuffy room. It did cool down pretty quickly though.
Penzy was great in getting the 4 of us a discount on our tour to the marine park, (thanks!), and was always willing to talk and make us feel welcome.
Even though we were in Chaweng, we were a bit of a walk from everything (we would walk 40 minutes to a better spot on the beach, but maybe we were just a bit fussy), but ultimately we didn't mind the walking. You're still pretty nearby to stuff.
The thing that irritated me most was that the mat just on the inside of the entry never seemed to be shaken out. As this was a place where you have to take your shoes off before entering, (obviously not uncommon in Asia), and having sand on our feet pretty much constantly, it was really frustrating to only get more sand on them before going up the steep and uneven stairs to our rooms.
This was the first hostel I stayed at in my month of exploring Thailand.
Overall it was basic but the staff we're so lovely and helpful it was perfect place for our first stay as we we're unsure on how things worked and where to go.
Location - The hostel is 2 mins from the quiet more pleasant side of the beach and about a 10 minute walk to the end of the beach where the party places are. The Main Street where the restaurants are is 1 min away.
Rooms - Our room had air con a safe and a fridge. It was meant to have wifi however it was very temperamental so it didn't work very often. You could go downstairs to the lobby and then it worked. The bathroom was a bit old but for the price basic is what your going to get.
Service - the service at this place is the deciding factor. Penzy and her team will do anything to help. The best service we had in all of our month in Thailand.
Located just five minutes from Chaweng Beach, I couldn't really fault the Sunny and Penzy guesthouses. The rooms were comfortable, clean and had all the basics that you need (including a safe, cold drinks, free hot drinks, good shower room, air con). What I really liked was the friendliness of the owners. I stayed there for the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan, and they helped organise the ferry trips and sent us of in a group, which was nice having been on my own.
