A wonderful apartment overlooking the sea in the beautiful quiet bay of Slano.
A nice welcome and it had everything we needed for our 4 night stay. Eating breakfast on the balcony was always a treat and the view and the closeness of the sea was great and it was very clean and good to swim in. Although the nice gentleman and ladies looking after the apartments didn't speak too much English they were always very friendly and we knew they would help us if we needed anything.
We were there quite late in the season so it was quiet and the nearby restaurants and shops were good and only a very short walk away. There is a large hotel in the village at the bottom of the bay but it was quite easy to ignore it and the people in it seemed to stay there and it was quiet.
The room had Air-Con which was good as it was hot both in the day and at night.
The closeness of Slano to Dubrovnick was great and although we were driving (the car parking by the apartment was fine and we always found a place to park) we could have easily taken a bus.
We are recommending the Villa Adria to all our family and friends and plan to return next year.
Where to start. We have just returned after five days in Slano/Dubrovnik. A beautiful setting but quite remote.
Upon arrival we were greeted warmly by the owner and offered a drink. This was done in Croatian as neither if the owners who run Villa Adria can speak a word of English. Their warmth shone through and we were surprised that nobody in the Villa spoke any English at all. The only help this elderly couple have is a girl who helps clean. Francisco and Anastasia really tried even to trying to communicate through a translation book. They managed to tell us that they normally cater for Germans, Italians, French etc, but few English. The only language they could communicate through was Croatian or German.
Prior to going we had requested low ground accommodation, we were place at the top of the Villa up four flights of stairs. There was no explanation as to why and we couldn't ask as no English was spoken. The room whilst small was clean and functional. On one evening we had been out and on returning the owners were sat outside and asked us by hand jest urges if we would like a drink. We accepted. Fortunately whilst we were there another young couple came. He was Israeli and the lovely friendly girl was from Ukraine, both spoke English and Croatian so we managed to have some conversation. We drank quite a bit of liqueur that the owner made herself from her fruit trees. A very pleasant evening.
With regards to Slano from what we saw it is somewhere for people to go for a long weekend or a holiday to unwind. The bay is beautiful but unfortunately it is spoilt by people throwing rubbish such as empty bottles, wrapping paper and all sorts if odds and ends into the water. The gravel beaches were full of cigarrette butts including dog excrement. We certainly stuck out like sore thumbs being or appeared to being the only English people there. The lady in the bakery on the two occasions we went in made us feel unwelcome.
The only real friendliness we felt was from the restaurant staff and the bus driver. I would certainly visit Croatia again but be more selective with my accommodation and where we stay. It is a very pretty beautiful country
Perfect location in the bay of Slano. We were welcomed by the owner with open arms and although he didn't speak too much English, he welcomed us into the apartment as if we were guests in his own home. Within 10 minutes of checking in we were on our balcony admiring the view with an ice cold beer, specially bought for us. The room was spacious and for the price very well furnished, with a fully fitted extremely clean bathroom. Although not too many places open around during off season there are a couple of decent restaurants just a short walk around the bay. Great start to our holiday!
We had a sea view with balcony, which was stunning- the sea is about 5 steps from the property. The views are spectacular, and you can walk along the seafront. There are mini 'beaches'- shingle not sand, and the sea is great for swimming. The room was clean and tidy, we had a small fridge and crockery/glasses etc. included. The air-con is excellent. The owner doesn't speak English but has a family member who speaks it fluently. It's more of a large house than a hotel, but very quiet and we didn't hear any other guests at all. Bathroom was clean and fairly small, only larger rooms have baths.
Slano is a quiet, safe town, with two good and excellent value restaurants 5 minutes walk from the hotel. It has a couple of mini supermarkets which sell a bit of everything, and a small tourist info next to the bus stop. Buses take 40 minutes to get to Dubrovnik Old Town, and about 50 mins to get to the main bus terminal where you can get the airport bus. There are 2 bus companies that run regular services.
Check in and check out times are NOT as advertised- we arrived at 2pm (told check in from 1pm) and the room wasn't ready for another 30 minutes, and then on check out (it says 10am on website) we were asked to be out by 9am or 9:30am at the latest so they could get the room ready for other guests.
I have booked a room for my mom's vacation in September 2012
She came back absolutely happy and told me that she absolutely loved the place.
What she outlined:
- a nice and quiet place;
-very beautiful nature, especially if you like long walks;
- not that far from Dubrovnik if you like to see some old architecture;
- very friendly and helpful owner.
Se does think aout coming back next year.
