We had a disappointing Honeymoon stay at Borgo Santo Pietro. We were really excited to end our 2 week break here, after having waited 8 months due to COVID to finally have our Honeymoon, it was sad to end on this note of disappointment.
I will start with the good bits, check in was lovely and the grounds are simply stunning. We loved the Borgo bikes available to borrow, and took them for an hour to cycle round the grounds and encountered lovely garden staff and can tell they take pride in their work here. The food in the trattoria is the best we had on our trip and again, the staff here were so lovely and welcoming we ate there every night.
The main let down for us was the attention to detail lacking for a 5* hotel. The pool was broken for the entirety of our 4 day stay, we had actually even phoned ahead to ask about the pool and were assured by the reservations team that it was lovely and warm and covered at night, and it was one of the main reasons we booked. When we arrived the first thing we did was go to the pool and found it to be freezing cold (about 15 degrees celsius instead of 24). I walked over to the reception to tell the concierge and he tried to persuade me it was all working as intended and it was in fact heated. I asked them to check it and get back to us so we waited to hear back. An hour later we were still by the pool and no one had said anything to us so I went back to check and they confirmed it was broken and should be fixed by the next day. We changed our schedule and were out for the day, expecting to come back to a warm pool but it was still broken and we told the front of house team. By the end of our stay it still wasn't fixed and no one updated us. Its a small thing but for a prestigious hotel I would have made it my priority to check the pool for a guest that specifically phoned ahead and asked for updates and at least pretended it was a priority to fix.
It was also a shame that there weren't any nice acknowledgements that it was a Honeymoon stay. We stayed at lots of other lovely 5* hotels on our trip and they all went out of their way to make us feel special and at least acknowledged our Honeymoon which they didnt at BSP. The welcome drink was lovely but all guests receive this, if I was front of house I would have at least given us more information about packages and activities we could do to make our stay feel special. The iPad in our room was broken so we couldn't see any activities and when we went down to concierge on our first morning we were told the cookery school was fully booked due to COVID class restrictions. Again this was a real shame and would have been nice to have an email beforehand to warn of small class numbers and to book ahead.
I did write this all in an email over a week ago and fedback to the Borgo Santo Pietro Team directly but they didn't respond. Again it's a real shame and not what I would expect from a 5* hotel. All in all we were disappointed with the service we received, so much so that we changed our flights and came home 2 days early, not before the Borgo Santo Pietro team insisted we were still charged for these nights. So many opportunities to make up for the lack of attention to detail and yet it seems there wasn't any interest to ensure we were happy during our stay.
As soon as you drive up the driveway you immediately know that you are going to be staying in something special. The grounds are stunning, perfectly manicured and breathtaking . The views from the Trattoria and pool overlooking the Tuscan countryside are beautiful. The main building is full of character and the bedrooms are all a delight . Modern amenities like the TV are hidden away in the bedroom so as not to ruin the ambience of the decoration is a very nice touch. We ate in both of the restaurants and preferred the more traditional food of the Trattoria but thoroughly enjoyed our evening in the more formal one . The tuscan country side is a delight to drive around with Chianti being about an hours drive away . Staying at the Borgo was a privilege , go there you wont be disappointed !
Overall we had a lovely stay. The hotel itself is beautiful, with real character in the common areas, rooms and restaurants. I think the grounds are possibly the nicest of any hotel we have ever stayed at. They are immaculately maintained and are simply stunning, with lots of different secluded areas to sit and rest. The food was very good and we enjoyed dining at both restaurants, while the Spa service was also great. Our room was nicely appointed and we particularly enjoyed the large indoor bath area in our suite.
The location is a little bit out of the way but we enjoyed the drive down winding country roads to get there and the setting means beautiful views over the Tuscan countryside.
There are a few things that could be improved though. On our first day our room was not cleaned until we called at 12:30, despite us being out for both breakfast and a spa visit in the morning. The bedding was also not great, with the under sheet coming off the mattress every night, such that we were in direct contact with the mattress which is not ideal. Finally while the staff were friendly and helpful I think overall service was a little patchy, possibly impacted by Covid restrictions with staff seeming a little stretched at breakfast and limited pool service (we had to go and find staff to order drinks/snacks).
Overall we had a lovely stay and would recommend a visit.
We are very lucky to be spending 8 days in this beautiful resort. The pictures which you see online do not do the hotel justice - it is stunning in every way. The rooms, the gardens and the pool are very beautiful. Everything is very clean and there is an army of staff working really hard to make everything perfect. The hotel has made important steps to make everything safe during these crazy COVID times, and we feel totally safe and relaxed here. Breakfast is delicious and delivered to your table or room if you prefer. Dinner choices are great too. The owners are super friendly and will sit and chat with you. For us what has really stood out is how informal, relaxed and friendly the whole atmosphere is. It feels like staying in a friend’s house. A huge thank you to all the staff who are working so hard, always with a smile. One last thing...you are surrounded by stunning countryside. We start every day at 7 with a 10k walk through the fields. What a way to start the day! Keep an eye out for foxes, boar, kingfishers, swallows and swifts and ask the hotel for directions through the fields to their river. Pure bliss.
It's been about a year and half since i stayed in this hotel, but I still talk with such reverence about it.
Italian countryside is magic in itself, but driving into this property was out of this world. It transported me into a magic enchanted setting.
Other than the fact that the rooms and the property was of course amazing, the thing i also enjoyed was walking through all the gardens and the property. It is quite large but quite do-able in 1-2 hours. there are little ponds, lakes, flower gardens (where they prepare all the arrangements on the property).
The pool is a nice spot to relax and the food is second to none- I don't think I enjoyed a better meal (at a hotel or even in all of italy and I was there for 6 weeks)!!) that is saying something as I very much frquented a number of the michelin restaurants and this came up on top for me.
breakfast is included and very satisfying and a few options for lunch and dinner. in our 3 nights here, we left the property once for 30 mins to visit the catherdral nearby. We didn't want to leave.
this property is a destination in itself
