This is our first time in this Austrian Ski Resort, that's why this review will be longer than usual.
Hotel Pros: great location, very clean and spacious rooms.
Hotel Cons: food, service, counting on daily leaflets than speaking with newcomers, pretending to be eco-friendly - but more as marketing strategy, not in systematic way.
We found the hotel via our travel agent - the main requirement was to be close to ski lifts and to have its own spa. The hotel fulfills these requirements partially.
The hotel has perfect location, also it is equipped with 2 swimming pools, spa area for adults only, and sauna and steam bath next to the internal pool. In the mornings the SPA area is just perfect - empty, so we enjoyed the silence and the pool.
The sauna and steam baths are not working till 3 p.m., but I enjoyed the infrared sauna.
At the afternoons all the Spa area is really full of people, and thus - unpleasant.
We couldn't enter in the Salt steam bath in the adult's section at the afternoons.
Hint: I would recommend to avoid going in spa center after 4-5 p.m., in case you like to silence and solitude, having in mind that you cannot enjoy sauna for free.
Food: good, but monotonous breakfast, option to have some soup and snacks in lunch time. I am disappointed from the dinners - despite the efforts to present the food in a 'gourmet' style, the quantity was very minimalistic. Also if you have for example pumpkin soup for lunch, the same soup will be served for dinner - but in a gourmet style ;-) The vise versa was also true - dishes for dinner we could find the next day.
The service in the dining room was very dis-satisfactory (with only one exception of qualified and quick waitress during the NY dinner), especially the timing. Part of the staff looked inexperienced, taking dishes while we were talking or taking pictures, we were waiting the next dish for an hour, etc.
Hint: If you want timely serving, try to have table in more central part of the dining room.
External services: Be careful, if you expect support from the hotel for your ski experience. We counted on the hotel to guide us how we could book children ski school, and we lost half of the first day, because the ski cards were issued by the hotels' reception with a wrong date.
Hint: Plan and book your ski in advance via internet, or going to ski center out of the hotel.
ECO: The hotel pretends to be eco-friendly - you won't find room cosmetics (!!! but you could buy such). Every day we received at least 2 paper leaflets with menu, or daily activities. No matter what paper is used, it is far away for eco-friendly policy. If a hotel is eco, there won't be cut-off Christmas tree instead of alive one at the back yard. The eco-policy in this hotel is not a system, whole standard - but announced eco partial, sometimes contradictory measures.
The view of our room was just amazing because it's in front of the ski pistes and you could see even people skiing and the terrace is perfect for a drink relaxing under the sun. I liked also the service; they let us check in and use the sauna in advance. By the way, they provide you with a bathrobe, 2 towels and a bag for the spa. We were offered also a welcome drink and a goodbye present. You can go in 5 minutes by walk to the spa St. Catherine e in 3/5 minutes by car to the ski pistes. I would go back even in spring to have the view of the green mountains. P.s. the view from their spa is also beautiful. I would just recommend a big clock on the wall.
I stayed in this hotel in july with my sons who are 11 and 7. The hotel is nicely situated, spatious and with big interior and exterior public areas. Outside the hotel there are beautiful spaces to play with kids-spatious and intimate. The room is clean and cosy.
The owners are present and active in the hotel life throughout the day. They take care that their guests are well informed about the activities they can attend. The hotel has various programmes for the guests-wandering, bicicles, e-bikes... the children are free to use all kind of toys in or around the hotel.
Above all, we had a feeling of home. Thank you.
We spent Feb half term at the hotel on a half board basis, as a family of four in 2 double rooms. The hotel is about 2 hours drive from Salzburg and has good level parking available. This hotel is one of the most relaxing places we have ever stayed at, especially given that we were skiing the sense of switching from an activity to relaxation was remarkable. The rooms (701 and 702) were light and airy with high pitched ceilings with a pleasant balcony. The spa was perfect for a quick swim indoors or out, steam room and sauna, with a separate area for adults (+15yr) which was a very quiet area. My wife and daughter both had a couple of spa treatments (massage) and were impressed at the care taken as well as range of options.
Breakfast is a buffet and complete enough to last the day, we discovered that the hotel has a mountain restaurant and provided free vouchers for soup at the restaurant which was a big saving over a weeks skiing. The evening meal was waitress service , much more relaxing than a full buffet. The food was excellent and typical Austrian cuisine.
All the staff were very friendly, Petra the restaurant manageress ran a very effective service and was very helpful. Indeed all the staff we met were always friendly and looking for ways to make our stay more pleasant.
If skiing it's worth noting that the ski and boot room was on the same level as reception and a bright airy room unlike many which are in the bowels of the building. You can also walk to the main junction on the lift system, about 300m, you could ski in and out in a good year. Although we didn't need it the children's facilities looked good. It is some distance to shops and bars and our 21 year old daughter was feeling the lack of clubbing experiences. Her parents didn't view this as a drawback
Eschenhof has everything you need during your holiday...and something more!
We appreciated above all the toys room, where 2 capable baby-sitters were able to play for hours with our son and his friends.
Also they organize pretty activities for them (bread cooking, hiking for families, etc...). Above all you can use this room to leave your son during the dinner, when he is tired to be seated.
The hotel in general is beautiful, with a big spa and 2 swimming pools (1 hot and inside, very useful for children).
A very various breakfast (sweet and salad) in the morning and 5 courses for dinner wait for you and often you find mr. Ortner who is making something for you (waffel or smoothies).
In addition mr. Ortner organizes outdoor activities for guests (e-bike tour, sunrise and dawn in the Kaiserburg, etc...) and they give you (if you stay 1 week or more) the Karnten card, that you can use to enter free in 100 places (very useful in the rainy day and for families).
The lifts to the peaks are 5 minutes far by car (Nationalpark bahn), to Kaiserburg 5 minutes by walk; they are free with the card.
Everything went well during our holiday and I recommend this hotel.
I would suggest to improve starter
and children courses for dinner and could be amazing a short enterntainment after dinner (as the evening when mr. Ortner offers prosecco to explain outdoor activities).
