We're planning a family trip around Texas and we know there are limited lodgings in the area. So we called today (April 17, 2019) to get more information on their availability and information about the rooms themselves. The woman who answered the phone didn't know much information about the surrounding area when we asked. She was very short with us on the phone and seemed to be offended if we had any questions, such as: "distance to Big Bend headquarters", "wifi in rooms", and "AC in rooms". The whole phone call she was rude when we wanted to clarify anything and we had to do our own math on the rates of the room since she wouldn't give us an official figure.
Even though the place looks promising and has amenities that were complete bonuses, like the pool and AC in the rooms, we won't be going here due to terrible customer service.
Rooms were very clean. Owner Nereida Galindo was nice and very hard working, with a lovely smile, and accommodating (she lent me a cell phone charger for the night).
Wifi and cell service was spotty, as there was a wind storm that came through the first night we were there. We lost power and TV, but they got a generator up and running very soon after, so all was good.
The lights between the beds did not work (room 303) so we had to use the overhead light (not ideal for reading in bed). Based on other reviews I thought there would be a fridge and microwave, there was not. So you might have to ask.
Dinner at the Mexican Restaurant in front was fantastic. I ordered the Mexican Plate, which consisted of the same items I had at lunch in Boquilles, Mexico that day...this food was SO MUCH better! No alcohol is served and you cannot bring in liquor--not even a glass of wine-- so that was kind of a bummer. The buffet breakfast was included with the room (eggs, bisquits, bacon, potatoes, pancakes). It was good, but with any buffet, timing is everything regarding freshness and whether it's hot or not.
We did not use the pool, but it was open and looked clean, from a distance anyway. The location was excellent, about 20 miles to the Maverick Junction entrance of Big Bend National Park.
I loved this place. It is on the highway about 20-25 miles from Big Bend. Like many places in the area, it doesn’t look like much but do not be discouraged. When we arrived the doors were locked. I was a little nervous because I had not received confirmation of my reservation. Within a minute, however, the proprietor unlocked the door and explained he had been in the kitchen then gave a shout out to his wife who he said was in charge of reservations. All a little unusual and casual from previous check-in procedures. Our room was large and beds comfortable. Lots of quirkinesses- headboards are affixed to the walls and probably were designed for double beds but a Queen was provided therefore the two pieces did not match up. If you are OCD then look elsewhere—I thought it whimsical. Bathroom was very small but vanity is separate from toilet and shower. Lots of electrical outlets. Amenities were minimal but sufficient including the bottles of water. Fridge and microwave provided in the room. The microwave had to be moved closer to the outlet for use but that was easy enough as it sits on the fridge and can be just rolled a few inches as needed. Clotheslines are strung in front of the rooms so housekeepers can air out or dry linen. I saw a shower curtain hanging one day. Wooden shutters take the place of curtains. Great looking pool. Everything was spotless. Breakfast is provided and it was great-scrambled eggs, biscuits, fried potatoes, pancakes, bacon, sausage. The motel check-in and restaurant share the same building which also serves as a church on Sunday. The restaurant is usually closed on Sunday and Monday (the two nights we stayed) but because the motel was full, the restaurant was open and it was excellent. Very good enchiladas and the chili rellenos were perfectly prepared. My husband enjoyed the rice which is something he generally dismisses as too bland. My only complaint is that the salsa isn’t spicy enough to compliment the delicious freshly fried tortilla chips. It was just a really wonderful two days.
My ten-year-old son and I stayed here one night after visiting Big Bend. We were very comfortable and had everything we needed. The pool was great and surprisingly cool. The owner went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. She will do anything she can to make your stay comfortable. I definitely recommend it!
Basic but exactly what we were looking for at a fraction of the price of other area rentals... not to mention one of the few places with a pool. Convenient location. Rooms were clean, beds comfortable, good a/c, refrigerator, microwave, outdoor grill and tv (only 3 channels though). Enjoyed the privacy and cool, clean saltwater pool.
