I booked to stay at 10 Castle Street as the nicest place I could find near some stables I was riding at. Julie, Gretchen and the whole staff made me feel really very welcome; knowing I was solo I think they made a bit of extra effort to make sure I felt at home, which I certainly did. The food and service was excellent as well. 10 Castle Street has the feeling of a well run private home or traditional London Club transplanted to the country, and I loved it for that. It is not at all corporate-bland which meant it was perfect for me. The house is beautiful, the rooms are clean and warm (when you put the radiator on) the bed linen fresh, the room minibar well stocked. Downstairs, open fires are lit every day making it very cosy. I really enjoyed my stay and will return. Recommended.
I booked one night at this hotel using their booking engine, whose name I don’t remember - which is a pity because it’s a sign of cost-cutting that they’re using it.
Half an hour after my booking was accepted I was told that my booking was ‘under threat’ because of an expired credit card and I should contact them within 48 hours to give them another card.
Since I could see that my booking was paid for using a credit card expiring on 05/23 with a credit limit of $1 million I pointed out to the hotel that they were wrong.
No reply - fairly typical of the service comments in these reviews.
A half hour after that I got a message saying the booking has been cancelled.
Ten minutes later I’d booked a room at a hotel down the road at 70% less that these eejits were charging
As I said to them - good luck outside Europe if this is how you treat your visitors!
Don’t waste your money. I can write a long review to explain the appalling service but that will make for tedious reading and waste your time. This amateurish establishment is trying to be high end, certainly with charging £300 minimum per night for a room, but they have no clue how to back it up with high end service or high end food. Instead they leave guests in the hands of untrained students resulting in average food and shocking service. If you dare comment you are insulted by the staff who told me I would have to ‘put up with it’!!!
What was meant to be a relaxing breakaway with friends turned into a disaster. Incompetent owners and management ruined our weekend.
I would absolutely not recommend this hotel to anyone. Please don’t waste your money. There are much better choices in this area.
10 Castle Street is lovely - a stunning hotel that we enjoyed on beautiful spring days.
The gardens are a highlight with manicured lawns, blossom and spring bulbs (cowslips, bluebells, fritillaries) and spots to sit and relax including some with fire pits. A field of alpacas too.
Our room (8) was lovely: spacious and clean with a huge bathroom and super comfy bed.
Food and wine were first class (including breakfast which so many places get wrong) and service was warm and friendly - especially the new barman. Oh, and it’s dog-friendly; our spaniels had clean and comfy do-nut beds and a water bowl provided, and plenty of attention lavished on them.
If I lived nearer I’d definitely be a member.
We had not been before. It was a quiet evening with only two couples dining, so we were accommodated in the charming drawing room. The food and service were fine and the wine chosen by the waitress on our behalf proved to be excellent. I feel that for a 5 Star venue, the attention to detail could have been improved. Staff should be trained to place napkins on the laps of guest and the constant “ No worries” when thanked might be appropriate in McDonald’s, but I think this needs to be addressed. Overall, we had a good experience and will return.
