What a great break before lockdown, room brilliant, staff friendly and efficient and food great one of my favourites. The river was in flow the car park was just across the road and free and the work by Robinsons to react to the Covid situation was excellent.
We were looking for somewhere to stay in Lancashire, since we had to keep within the Tier 3 area and hit upon the SpreadEagle for 2 nights. We made the right decision. The room was great, the staff were attentive and the food was above normal pub standard. The weather was dreadful, but we can't blame that on the Spreadeagle. and we managed a couple of good (if wet) walks. In fine weather, this would be an even better place to stay. Jsut one suggestion: the emergency light in the room was far too bright, so we were glad of eye shades.
Booked the spreadeagle in a rush after cancelling a trip to the lakes due to tier 3 restrictions. How lucky we were that we did. It is a gem of a place. Standing by the river in a pretty village the inn looks idyllic. Inside we were welcomed by 2 very attentive staff. Our room was beautiful, spacious with unusual furnishings and very clean. The bath had no plug but this was quickly found and put right by one of the staff. Breakfast was wonderful with a selection of starters before the main course, served by the helpful waitresses. We had booked evening meals each night of our stay and wow! The restaurant was busy but well spaced and the food was amazing. We had the lamb flank and fish pie which were outstanding.
The Spreadeagle certainly delivered a top lancashire stay with the most helpful welcoming staff, beautiful comfortable rooms and stunning food. Great walks also from the Inn or a short ride to walk Pendle Hill.
We have stayed at The Spread Eagle before and really enjoyed its location and the standard of service. The government introduced a cut in VAT (from July 15th) in relation to food and hospitality BUT it is apparently not mandatory. Robinsons Brewery stated in a phone call that they had left it up to the tenant whether to pass this reduction from 20% VAT to 5%VAT. As it was a birthday treat for us we lived in hope that we would be able to benefit from Rishi Sunak's benevolence but it was not to be. No reference was made to this on the website or in the hotel, in fact when we paid the member of staff claimed not to know of this scheme's existence! It runs until Jan 2021 but not at the Spread Eagle. Very disappointing as we often told 'we are all in this together'.....some more than others?
Further : be warned that the problem with the (very) bright green night light still persists. We were in Room 9 and found sleep difficult as it was so bright. It spoilt a restful stay. Staff say they are awaiting Robinsons to rectify this problem although it has been noted in other reviews for months!
Conclusion : after several excellent meals and overnight stays at the Spread Eagle we shall NOT be returning
BEWARE ROOM #6.
Five problems (1) When we entered the room we noticed a smell then opened the very small window to hear the kitchen extractor fan. We asked for a room change but told none was available. In the morning the room was stinking of kitchen smells and our clothes were impregnated with it so much so that a complete laundry wash was necessary. (2) There is a bright green safety/security light over the door which shines throughout the room making sleep very difficult. Although mentioned in several other reviews on this site the staff seemed oblivious to the problem simply stating it is a safety feature – some feature! (3) One bedside light had a spent bulb and on investigation the bulb socket was broken and an attempt had been made to glue it which was a safety hazard by any electrical standard. (4) The bed creaked and the mattress was old and uncomfortable. (5) Minor but worth mentioning – every time we left the room the outside door handle came off.
We had a second night booked which we cancelled and were offered a refund for the first night, which we accepted. Despite all of this the staff were very courteous and understood our concerns.
