The hotel is surrounded by wonderful touristic sites in SALY. The hotel room is not god. Very outdated. Food is good though. Airport shuttle is not free either. So for wonderful located hotel but well maintained.
My room was oddly adapted, the bathroom separated from the bed area by a wooden wardrobe. Two single beds and very hard pillows. To shower you need to bow or kneel. No internet usable in the bedroom. Food is mediocre and repetitive. Infrastructure for our workshop was quite limited.
Booked this hotel for relaxing, but aware! When you need a quiet place, you are wrong! The hotel is very big and it is always busy. Activities all day long and music until 11 pm (on the Cascade Pool and on the beach its quiet). But when you search for such a holiday style, you are at the right place:-) The rooms are ok, but not a 4 Star Standard. No kettle, no coffee making facilities, old style, no fridge, no Mini-Bar, TV got a very bad signal, the rooms have no balconies and there is no Wifi in the rooms. The bed linen are very cheap quality and the blanket is too cold in the night, but the mattress was comfortable (but the housekeeping give you more blankets if needed). The shower had very hot water. Room cleaning very good. The rooms facing the Cascade pool are quieter than the rest.
The two pools and the beachside are very nice, a lovely garden, everything well maintained. Booked breakfast which was very good and tasty. A great choice. For dinner they charge 15.000 CFA (roundabout 23 Euros, without drinks), and on Gala nights they charge 30.000 CFA. That´s definitely too much. But you can eat outside, there a some very good restaurants in walking distance, or you book the all inclusive package.
So sorry, but I have four complaints
-they are specializedin french speaking guests, that´s overall ok, but in a 4-Star I expect some English speaking staff and all informations in local language and English. English speaking persons are very rare to find.
-Booked an excursion to Ile Gorée and Lac Rose, they promised me an Englisch speaking guide, but there wasn´t. This was really a bad day for me, I didn´t understand anything and I paid the same price as all the other french speaking guests. So I can say, they lied to me...
-the Wifi is so poor.... only at reception and the main pool you have connection, but only maybe and so slow... For people on business trips, definitely a No go
-The housekeeping come into your room, altough the No disturb sign hang out. A NO go too!
-The reception staff need a training how to treat guests. This is the first impression a guest get. As I arrived, no Hello or welcome. A rude person saw me and my luggage and said: Check in at 3 pm and walked away.... what´s that? I wait half an hour to ask the next one if i can use the pool until check in. In a very rude ton he said yes and walked away again, but I was not finished with my questions!!! After another 10 minutes waiting time I asked the third receptionist if i can store my luggage... Later, I went to reception for the check in but they didn´t find my reservation and they told me, maybe there is no room for me, because the Hotel is fully booked. OMG, I was really a bit desperately in this moment.. Again, so long waiting time... and then, thanks god, they found my reservation. I asked for a room in a quiet location but again, very rude: We don´t have, I told you, we are full, don´t you see the crowds of people in the Lobby? My good, what a bad treatment! Another woman screamed from behind, we have a quiet room location, so, the other one lied to me... what a bad behaviour.
After getting my room card, no informations about activities, breakfast-, lunch- and dinnertimes etc... on my last day, someone told me that the kayaks and the Catamaran trips are free! I found out, that they have a Spa... Too late for me... And they will never give you the feeling you are welcoming and important. When you asked something, they never concentrate to you, no they care for 3-4 guests at same time.
But all other staff was very very friendly, maybe the should manage the reception, hahaha...
Because of this incidents I would never book this Hotel again, and when you are not able to speak french, you will be very isolated. They give you the feeling, you are not welcome. This is a phenomenon in all French speaking countries all over the world:-)
A tip for the reception staff:
Hello and welcome to our house. Nice to have you here. We are sorry, check in is at 3 pm. But you can enjoy our bars, the swimmingpools and the beach until then. Please give me your luggage, I will store it for you. When you need a pool towel you have to pay a deposit and so on. It could be so easy:-)
Ah, the last complain. For my airport transfer they organized a very bad driver... car was not in a good condition and the driver molested me the whole journey! A shame!
Reasonably priced and staff are warm and helpful.
Buffet selection is good but after a week I needed a change. Warm desserts would be good.
I like the store where I got a swimming suit. Hotel is walking distance to a casino, restaurants, pharmacy etc.
Layout, private beach area, pool, drinks, activities are great but no one takes the time to tell you about any of these things. Think you can even get tennis lessons. The website says 2 restaurants. Only saw one where breakfast is served.
A tour or info leaflet is essential. My telephone didnt work and even if it did, there was no card to tell me what numbers to call for reception etc.
I stumbled across the spa on my last day. Shame. I would have spent more time and money there.
The white towels in the bedrooms are more cream from over use.
Wifi poor in rooms. We were large group and everyone moaned about this.
The shower sprayed water at hugh pressure. Felt I was wasting it.
TV quality was poor.
Cleaners knock and enter within 3 seconds. They need to be taught to wait.
With a little bit of effort, this could be a great place.
We spent 2 weeks all inclusive at the Palm Beach Hotel in October .We were given a welcome drink on arrival , whilst filling in the registration forms . As we were late there was a table laid in our room with salads , cold meats , bread , fruits , cakes , bottle of cold water & linen serviettes .
Next morning we looked round the hotel facilities & discovered 3 bars , 2 restaurants ( one buffet & the other à la carte ), spa , fitness center , 2 pools ( one quiet & the other full of animation team organising games & fun). Gorgeous , well tended gardens with palm trees , baobabs , rubber & banana trees , beautiful flowering bushes , full of bright yellow and blue birds and large lizards . Ask the gardener to prepare a freshly picked coconut for you so the bar staff can make you a pina colada !
The staff can not do enough for you & their enthusiasm more than makes up for the slightly tatty carpets & curtains in the rooms . Since the problem with the beach being eroded in Saly , many nearby luxury hotels have been forced to close . Luckily Palm Beach still have their own private beach & have been able to stay open . While we were there , they had the WiFi system updated & all rooms now receive internet .
As October is the end of the rainy season , we were not many tourists in the hotel . However the choices on the buffet were exceptional , the cooks & waiters very attentive .
Different themes every evening with French , Chinese , Moroccan , Italien and Senegalese on Tuesdays . Every meal has a choice of grilled fish or meat with other prepared dishes under cloches . I enjoyed the fresh salads , colourful fruits & home made soups in the evenings . We ate in the à la carte restaurant overlooking the beach a couple of times ( just book the day before ) , and enjoyed eating al fresco hearing the waves & watching the sun go down . Memorable dishes at the à la carte were prawn cocktails , smoked swordfish , sea urchins with their poached egg surprise & lobster ( extra ). Desserts , I loved the baobab pancakes with ice cream & melted chocolate so much that I didn't try any other sweet .
The waiting staff were attentive & remembered your wine preferences , even laying your table in advance with the ice bucket containing your favourite drinks . All waiters were lovely but my favourite Gora was extra special as he prepared freshly squeezed lemon juice for me every breakfast during my fortnights stay . Chef Fall was also exceptional & came to tables to see how we were enjoying our meals & was always on hand to make sure everything was perfectly presented on the buffets . On saturday evenings a veal BBQ is held outside on the terrace & was enjoyed immensely by the locals from Dakar who come every weekend to get away from the hustle & bustle of the big city in bus loads . Bottled water is provided every meal & also by the cleaner if you forget to take your bottle to the room .
The Bars :-
In the main bar , fabulous bar staff , especiall " Habiboo" who remembered every ones names & favourite drinks . Always happy & smiling , bringing olives , peanuts , popcorn to the tables along with my gin & tonic & cocktails for others . He earned the name " Dr Habiboo" by making up baobab juices for those suffering from upset stomaches . We tended to use this quiet bar mostly . In the evenings 7_8pm there was usually music to enjoy during the apperatifs & relaxing before dinner .
Beach /Pool Bar :-
At the beach bar fun & games with fellow tourists & animation team for those that want it . Gloria is in charge of the animators & deserves a medal for her hard work .In the late evenings this is where shows were put on & the Senegalese dancers performed on stage . When I asked the barman here for a freshly squeezd lemon juice he told me it would cost 1,900 CFA so I stuck to gin & tonics with ice & lemon as that was allowed in the all inclusive , strange but true .
Luckily our room overlooked the quiet pool & bar so we were able to enjoy a siesta or early night without being disturbed by the entertainment .
Rooms need a bit of TLC & should have the old stained carpets replaced by lino & the curtains renewed . However this is a minor complaint when you see the wrack & ruin in the surrounding hotels recently closed down . When we first entered the room , it smelt musty / mouldy , but we left the window opened to air it & it improved . We only found out on our last day that there was hot water available if you ask the maintenance team . We were actually quite happy with the cool water as it was very hot & sticky . During our stay the cables were put into ditches dug in the road for WiFi . There are now receptors all over the hotel so should be excellent internet facilities . Flat screen TV which receives BBC World news along with plenty of French channels . Safe € 20 deposit . Hairdryer , tiny soaps , shampoo & shower gel , so I suggest you bring your own toiletries as the supermarkets are expensive here . We used the pool towels ( € 20 deposit ) as the hotel towels were grey and hard .
The airconditioning works very well .
There is a shop in the hotel for those who do not wish to go outside for gifts . I enjoyed browsing the local shops for colourful materials , karité butter body lotions , jewellery , masks , paintings & gorgeous dresses . Be prepared to haggle & walk away . Two minute walk from the hotel to the pharmacy , banks , opticiens ( only € 45 for reading glasses ) , casino . 15 minutes walk to supermarket . Mbour , the next village costs only 200 CFA by shared taxi or 300 CFA to la Somone if you wish to go further afield at a small cost .
We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday & would go back if there is another special offer as it was great value for money .
