With huge gratitude and fondness, I highly recommend both Om’s Home (Jomsom) and the Red House (Kagbeni) as clean, comfortable and welcoming hotels in the Mustang Valley. Over the past 5 years I’ve stayed at both hotels, multiple times, while working in the region. I’ve stayed there in Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall - always solo. The staff are warm and generous, the food is delicious (seriously good dal bhat, pizza (ask for extra spinach on top) and veggie burgers. They always have cold beer ready. And their smiles are deeply genuine.
I’ll post here some photos - one of my favorite room at Om’s, another of Nilgiri mountain, seen out the window of my favorite coffee shop in the whole world (no exaggeration there - it’s Himalayan Java, part of the hotel, where the manager, Sanish, plays beautiful blues on the guitar and jazz on the keyboard, and where the walls are covered with a gallery-full of oil and acrylic paintings of the Upper Mustang landscape by the massively talented Dhwoj Gurung. Not to mention the coffee, which is absolutely top notch). I’m also posting a view out my guest room window, and lastly a shot of a group of tibetan children all dressed up in their traditional clothes, walking by the hotel on their way to a Bon ceremony.
One last word about the Red House in Kagbeni - there is a guest room at the very top of the building that is gorgeous both inside, and from inside looking out. Truly breathtaking views. Total privacy. Modern even, and extremely clean, and yet somehow it’s minimalist style is perfectly aligned with the town’s very old and true magic.
Om’s Home, Red House - thank you for your kindness in hosting me so warmly over these last many years. As you know, I can’t wait to return!
