Clean and updated Holiday Inn, blocks from the University of Illinois. While the hotel was packed, the rooms were still quiet and comfy. Pool area was clean but very loud. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Champaign.
Weekend tournament for the junior high set, so multiple rooms, families and kids. Reservation made a few weeks in advance and rooms reserved, and no secret made of the fact that multiple families with children. Arrived at the hotel mid afternoon. What's the first thing that a group of kids want to do at a hotel when it's 5 degrees outside. Don't guess swim, because the pool is closed. Would have been nice to know before we booked and then had to entertain a bunch of restless natives from 3pm until bed time without a pool, and without outdoor activities being much of an option. Strike 1.
No heat in the lobby, thermostat said 62, clerks in their winter coat, lounge area in front of the large windows had to be no more than 50. So lounging in the lobby or using the provided computers, not a comfortable option. And speaking of heating, multiple people noticed that if the hvac unit in the room wasn't actively running, cold just poured in from underneath, like a damper wasn't closing when it was shut off. Strike 2.
Breakfast included according to tripadvisor. "We're making a restaurant, (actively under construction, power tool racket just off the lobby until quitting time) so we don't offer a complimentary breakfast any more. But do offer a breakfast for a price." And presumably not in the dining area, because it was under construction. Again, had we known this when we booked, we would have gone down the road. Strike 3.
Smaller issues, very little adjacent parking, majority had to park in a lot across the street. Staff had to manually enter several credit cards, couldn't get them to go through automatically. Couldn't get HLG rewards number to accept. Possibly because, "Well were not officially Holiday Inn yet" But all the signage said Holiday Inn.
Pros: Room was adequate.
Spent the weekend of 7/13-7/15/18 here having a visit with my kids/grandkids. The indoor pool was great especially with the heat index outside and the storms on Saturday. That’s about the ONLY good thing I can say about the hotel.
The fold out bed did not have any blankets provided (only sheets) so we requested blankets from the front desk at 7 pm - the clerk assured us it would be “just a few minutes”.
8:00 rolls around - no blankets. We call again - no answer at desk. We go down there - clerk says she “is looking for blankets” and will bring them right up to us.
9:00 - no blankets. Grandkids are tired and need to get to bed. We go downstairs again - another worker states she is going to “get the blankets now” and will bring them to us.
10:00 pm - no blankets. Kids have gone to bed using TOWELS to cover up with. I call - clerk is now nasty with on the phone. I head straight back down there - same girls are literally standing at the desk and definitely not looking for blankets. I firmly tell them I need the blankets and that I’m going to stand there until I get them. Amazingly - they suddenly were able to find blankets.
Three and a half hours for blankets. Absolutely the worst customer service I’ve ever received.
There is also tons of construction and only one elevator for guests and housekeeping to share so be prepared to have long waits and crowded elevators. Stairs are quicker! Housekeeping also has to cut through the pool area. (No fault of their own).
The breakfast was standard fare (cereals, fruit, yogurt, breads) along with some hot items (eggs, sausage, potatoes, gravy).
The staff was great - breakfast was fabulous. Hotel is undergoing remodeling but it was a minor inconvenience. pool was nice and parking was ok - room was good and internet was ok. I will stat at the property in the future.
Brought my niece and nephew to see the Engineering Open House at U of I. The hotel was comfortable, clean and friendly. I could tell there have been some updates done, specifically the hall carpeting. The room was clean and comfortable for the four of us that were in there. The kids enjoyed the pool. Breakfast the next morning was very good. I took advantage of the omelet station, which was also very nice.
