2020 has been a year of travel plans canceled, rescheduled, and canceled again. But a trip to see my best friend in Georgia brought this beautiful place into view on my potential overnight reservations list. I’m so thankful it did! The price was right, the location was rural and scenic, and the hosts go above and beyond with COVID-safe routines when it comes to housekeeping concerns. These facts all caught my eye as wonderful qualities in their listing description. However, the actual experience of staying there is where the delight really was. I have never roomed at a better establishment in all my personal and business travels. The hosts were beyond hospitable and we’re genuinely interested in making my stay a cozy, welcoming, and luxurious experience. The interiors are a feast for your eyes with the beautiful combination of owner-created, modern artistic renderings juxtaposed against the house’s original and antique structure. The bedding made one’s sleep like a dream, and the food was simply delicious. I highly recommend staying in the verde room. Cynzia and Edward are delightful hosts. They have created quite the sanctuary in the middle of a quaint town that helps you get away from all the bustle and noise of the city while still retaining the courtesies and attention to detail that one expects from staff at 4 and 5 star hotels. This place is a gem, and its owners are a treasure. All reasons why I will be staying here again.
My wife and I came over from Marietta for a high school reunion and we knew exactly where to stay, her old homestead. It has been several years since her family lived here so we were so excited to have an opportunity to enjoy the home once again and see all the amazing things Ed & Cynzia had done. We loved it all, sitting on the front porch, walking through all the old buildings, staying in my wife's old bedroom (The Rojo Room), having breakfast in the Buchanan Dining Room next to the Vinson Parlor and mostly connecting with Ed & Cynzia. They were such great hosts. We had the opportunity to share some old stories of our experience in the old home as well as hear about all the things that have happened since. Would recommend this to anyone looking to relax and get a piece of history of one of the most charming cities in the State of Georgia. Can't wait to return with friends in the Fall for a Geogia game. Thank You Ed & Cynzia.
We had a wonderful time at the Gillen House! The home is beautiful and charming, decorated with the hostess’ artwork. The bed was so comfortable and the room/bathroom was beautiful. Edward and Cynzia are so welcoming and hospitable- we felt right at home. The breakfast was delicious and everything was so thoughtfully planned out. Even though it rained our entire visit, we still loved sitting on the back porch, reading and listening to the rain. Beautiful home and wonderful people- you won’t be disappointed!
I was looking online for lodging for the Notre Dame-UGA weekend. I wanted something on the east side of Athens so that we could avoid the heavy traffic between Atlanta and Athens. I found The GillenHouse in Maxeys. I didn't want to take a chance that it would be booked, so I called them. It was 9:45 p.m. on a Saturday evening, and Edward, one of the owners answered! (Personal Service) To say that we had a great time, would be an understatement. The house is perfectly renovated and beautifully decorated. Our room was spacious and had large (new) windows, Beautyrest King sized mattress, beautiful new fixtures and tile in the bathroom. The house was completely booked, but we felt as if we were the only visitors. It was very quiet. The home is filled with beautiful art created by Cynzia and Edward. There is a putting green and a driving range in the back yard. Plenty of lounging space on the deep porches, the upstairs screened porch, the back deck or beneath the hollies and or the magnolias. Cynzia made the most wonderful salsa from the tomatoes grown in their garden for us our first night. We enjoyed walking on the new Firefly trail that is across the street. We didn't have time to play on their bocce ball court, but hope to next visit. We both slept better than we had in months. We hated to leave.
My husband and I visited this lovely home soon after it opened. We were awed by the restoration work that had been done so tastefully within and without the house. The bedrooms were large and beautifully decorated, and the bathrooms were all brand new and sophisticated. It’s obvious that Cynzia and Edward enjoy what they do and pass that enjoyment onto their guests. We recommend it highly.
