During the 2019 festive season we stayed in a 4 bed chalet at Sobhebgu Lodge, which is part of Nibela Lake Lodge. Staff were really friendly. Accomodation was great, but in need of maintenance in several areas. AC in main living area. None in the bedrooms where it is needed most! Room ceiling fan above bed was of little benefit especially that windows had to be kept closed at night due to mosquito's... Balcony with lake view a plus as was the bon fire area. Main hotel building nice, but never any vibe. Not to mention drinks and food being overpriced. Main pool area lovely, but could do with more sun longers. Try to bring your own firwood as theirs is a rip off. Road to the main reception is ok for a normal car. Early morning boat trip was a highlight and a must do!!! DSTV available in each chalet and WiFi at the Nibela Lodge reception area. Can recommend.
Our overall stay was very pleasant. Got much needed rest and a food break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
A few tips on areas of improvement/ recommendations:
1. More variety for breakfast and lunch menus. Would also be great to have a kids’ menu since the lodge is child friendly.
2. Bigger swimming pools would be great, because if one family occupies the pool area, others can’t join.
3. Air conditioning in the dining and communal area would be great because the ceiling fans don’t make much of a difference.
4. NYE menu was VERY disappointing. Could have done a lot better, e.g. a full braai with a variety of meat and salads.
Otherwise, great and friendly staff that goes the extra mile to make you feel at home. A very relaxing stay!
Positives
Very friendly management and waiters
Great breakfasts and care about food preferences
Nice pools, trails, rooms
Very nice touches re Xmas present and notes in bedroom and boma dinner
Negatives
Very hot restaurant area, uncomfortable with no aircon
Dinners besides first and boma were not great, small and basic, couldnt eat some items.
Suggest check butter, milk, cream etc as they were always sour due to heat therefore some puddings were sour like peppermint pudding etc.
Dirt road is 23km not 20 as indicated by the signs
Suggest a snack shop as difficult with kids to only eat restaurant food.
Suggest meals prepared already like Xmas dinner so wait not so long for meals
A wonderful get a way location and a must for avid bird watchers. The staff are polite and knowledgeable; do the night drive and learn about the astronomy of the southern skies. The rooms are suburb, you may not wish to leave the room to do anything! The food is great too with a lovely view over the lake. Wildlife- wise, I only saw a snake ( black mamba and huge spiders!!) so be careful if you do a nature hike! Its a place to really unwind, The pool is a bit small if its the hot season and the resort is full, there is lots of room to expand the pool, so I recommend that upgrade..
My mother and I enjoyed a memorable weekend at Nibela lodge. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They catered for my veganism and I can recommend the curried chickpeas for breakfast! We enjoyed the swimming pool and sitting outside eating our meals. The bedrooms were comfortable and the coffee machine was a pleasant surprise!
