Location is a little unnerving as it is on a steep hill. Not a lot of parking. There were three sets of steep stairs to get to our room. If you are elderly or handicap this wouldn’t be the place for you. The grounds are spectacular. The rooms are nothing to write home about. No TVs. The bar was beautiful and the bartenders and servers were amazing and sweet. The food was delicious. Loved the complimentary breakfast. Very nice people. Extremely nice. But the room really wasn’t that nice ;(
I booked an "ocean view" room with two double beds. What we got was a jungle view, one double bed, and one single bed. When I inquired with the owner about this, I was asked "what do you want me to do about it?" Our jungle view room was very "okay".
Instead of going on about this icky part of staying at La Colina, let me tell you what was nice about the place: the staff (other than the owner )-this includes Jordey at reception, the poolside cooks, bartenders, and pretty much everyone else we met. The highlight was something out of the hotel's control: two sloths, a troop of Golden Titi monkeys, and a toucan. On our first night, we saw all of these in a tree within the hotel's grounds. We were able to see the wildlife from a fairly close view and this was a real treat!
We ate dinner at La Colina the first night-it was fine but nothing to go out of your way for. The second night we ate at Rafael's-which was excellent.
The location of this hotel is on the Quepos side of the mountain that is the main area of Manuel Antonio. We had planned to walk around but the steep location and missing sidewalk made it impossible due to heavy traffic. I suggest that travelers book a place closer to the Manuel Antonio National Park side (either on top of the hill or on the slope towards the park). The other side seemed nicer and more convenient to shops, restaurants, and sunset views. For the same price, we could have stayed in a nicer, more convenient place-and maybe even had an ocean view room with two double beds:-)
I paid extra for an ocean view. What I got was a dug out pit outside my room. No overhang so you sit in the baking sun, no shade. In the room there is no where to put your suitcase. Bedside lamps were cheap college kids lamps. The curtains are thin and flimsy so let's light through. And speaking of light, there is a lighthouse somewhere off in the distance and you are reminded of it every 10 or so seconds when the light flashes in your room through the transom. In the pool area there is one lounger type chair and a hammock. There are a few other chairs but everyone wants that one singular good chair.
Beautiful grounds, lots of stairs. Loved the pool. It was so hot we spent a couple of hours each evening/night in the pool. Loved the feel of the open air restaurant. The breakfast there was the best we had anywhere during our stay. The a/c was small and they request that it be turned off when we are not there so the room was very hot when we would return from a day out. The hotel is up on a hill so it didn't seem super close to other things to do. Staff was always nice and helpful. The shower could use a little updating and the toilet seat wasn't attached to the toilet. It was just sitting on top. They do not provide towels for the pool or for the beach so plan to bring your own. We had flying ants in our room at night so would have to spray ourselves and the bedding with bug spray at night. That being said, I would stay here again.
