We stayed here on the first and last nights of our trip and it was an absolutely fantastic choice. We had considered several of the airport hotels but are so glad that we chose the Villa San Ignacio instead. First, it's only a 20 minute drive (without traffic) from the airport, so not that far. Second, it's a lot less expensive than any of the airport hotels (we paid $95 each night).
The main reason to stay here is the customer service. The staff go above and beyond to help with anything you could possibly need. They arranged taxis from/to the airport for us ($23 from the airport, because it includes the drivers' parking fee) and $20 to the airport. Both drivers were the nicest men, so sweet and accommodating (even with our 4am departure for our 6:30am flight!). Both spoke excellent English but were very gracious and encouraging when we spoke in our limited Spanish. When we arrived, it was easy to find our driver among the chaos based on the instructions we were given. We arrived at the hotel at 11pm and had two cold beers delivered to our room a few minutes later!
Breakfast (complimentary) was delicious with fresh juices, plantains, beans/rice, toast and eggs made to order. When we left for our crazy early flight, there was a knock at our door at 3:30am: fresh hot coffee and little to-go bags with bananas and delicious banana bread.
The rooms are pretty basic but since we were only here for two nights, we weren't looking for luxury. The pool area was a great place to relax with a juice or cocktail before dinner. We ate at the restaurant on our last night in the country and really enjoyed it. The grounds are also very nice, though we didn't have time to explore them.
The only downside is that we heard a lot of noise from traffic on the nearby road starting at 5am one morning. This may not affect all of the rooms. Ear plugs helped a lot.
Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend the Villa San Ignacio and would absolutely stay here again.
Finally, three quick tips for CR travel in general:
We rented with Vamos and they delivered our car to the hotel during breakfast for a $9 fee.
When we dropped the rental car back at Vamos at the end of the trip, we used Uber to get back to the Villa San Ignacio and had no problems with it.
You can pay for a lot of things in Costa Rica in US dollars but be sure to bring a lot of small bills ($10s, $5s, $1s) because change is given in colones and not at the best rate.
