After visiting Vomo for the 5th time in 4 years, we thought it warranted us writing a review to share with other Travellers. We have travelled to Vomo just as a couple, with other friends and then with our young family.

The service levels are the best we have experienced in Fiji. You often hear of the phrase "Fiji time" and while this is good in that you have to relax and be prepared to wait for most things it can get annoying sometimes. But not in Vomo - service comes at a reasonable pace. The front line staff including the Island managers are friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to ensure your wants and needs are catered to.

The food is fantastic and a real highlight. Lunch and Dinner are normally 3 course meals except on the Feast night which is Lovo style buffet. The meals are nice sized proportions so that you can eat the 3 courses without feeling bloated. I am one with a large appetites and have never needed to order extra. There are lots of nice touches such as for Easter the chef handmade 100 easter eggs the night before for the guests!

They have a great kids club that is staffed during the holiday periods with around 5-6 younger Fijian women. Their youth is a plus as they are able to keep up with the energy levels of young children. It;s very pleasing to be able to sit down for a leisurely dinner in a stunning setting without interruption whilst your children attend Kids Club. Kids Club starts at 6pm and finishes at 9pm and childrens meals are all provided there.

We stayed this time during school holidays and whilst the resort was a full house you did not notice this. Only at eating times were you aware of how many people were on the Island.

Other highlights for us;
- watching suset and having drinks at the Rock's bar and seeing the fruit bats flying in to feed
- engaging with the genuine friendly staff who are not obtrusive, but make you feel part of the Island family
- watching the young turtles being released
- excellent snorkelling
- lots of physical activities if you are that way inclined. Kayaking around the Island takes about 70 mins. Or climb to the top of the mountain for great views.
- clothing laundered everyday, all part of the accomodation costs
- meeting other repeat guests. They apparently have a large number of returning guests like ourselves
- special dinner at the Rocks Bar and down on the Beach
- Meke show on Thursday nights. A must see - the good part is they explain the cultural aspects of as the ceremony is performed.
- The Villa rooms are a good size and suitable for a family of up to 3 or small children then up to 4. (4 persons generally and it is too crowded, but then you can get a connecting suite)

Area of improvement - the only one we could think of,
- They have only one 3 bedroom villa (with its own swimming pool) and it is so popular youy need to book well in advance. They should build another 2 of these.

Bula and thank you for such a positive review of your time on Vomo. Wow, five times in four years! You really are a Vomo Champion! We are so happy that you and your family love Vomo and we sincerely appreciate you coming back as we know there are a lot of fabulous holiday destinations available. It's wonderful that you were there to enjoy our Executive Chef's Easter Eggs. He was quite the chocolatier at Easter and he is a real asset to Vomo. We have noted your comments about more Private Residences. Currently The Royal and The Residence are well used and we are hopeful of building more in the future. We hope to see you back on Vomo again soon Vx

We recently enjoyed a family holiday at Vomo. We chose as it is the only luxary resort that allows children, clearly there niche. We read all the reviews which were all mostly accurate however the resort needs to improve to rightfully claim a 5 star rating. So we though we would highlight to good the bad and the ugly:
Como
THE ROOMS: The rooms are primarliy the same being a studio, mostly in a duplex constructing although they do have some that are detached. The rooms are from the resort inception as an adult only private resort. The rooms are getting a little dated now and the bathroom is a little tired, howeverthey are clean and comfortable. The beauty of this resort is clearly it's natural beauty. The biggest issue with the rooms is that they will only comfortabily house a couple with 2 small children or you will need to get a second room at double the cost. The resort is in nee of 2 bedroom accommodation to continue to target it's family market.

THE FOOD: The food is included as part of the tariff with breakfast plus 3 ccourse lunch and dinner. We felt that all we did was eat so you arenot going to go hungry here but if you are a large eater the you can always purchase additional meals. Our biggest issue with the food was that the chief often failed with the dishes provided. Although there were a few gems (paella & mud crab) the chief just did match the expecatition of his menu. Often the chef added one too many ingredients, failed with his flavour combination and never correctly seasoned his dishes. The food failed to match the 5 star standard of similar resorts.

THE KIDS: Allowing kids is clearly their niche and we were concerned that allowing kids would take away from the privacy and luxary of this resort, having visited many 'adult only' resorts. Vomo Island is large enough and has plenty of activities that you just don't notice the kids and actually add to the vibe of the island. On our stay the average guest had 2 children mostly under between 5 - 10 so about half the guests are children, so if this is a problem for you I would book elsewhere.

THE FACILITIES: SPA - provides a total offering but is in need of a renovation, messages are relaxing when you are interrupted by the tra ctor and law mowers. KIDS CLUB - the girls are great and engage the children, however club hut is in need of air conditioning. Swimming Pool - its far too small and there does need to be an adults only pool. In the afternoons the pool can be overrun by the kids. House Reef - the gem of the resort, right on your door step is a reef as good as any resort we have visited, including the Great Barrier Reef.

Comparing Vomo to it's peers it's certainly behind them and not up to their 5 star standard, but it isn't far behind and it niche of allowing kids is a winner. However if Vomo wants to keep it guest returning with older children then they will need to make some improvements.

Bula and a big thanks to you and your family not only for visiting Vomo but for taking the time to review us as well. It's great that you enjoyed the atmosphere of the island and all the natural beauty, including as it sounds the excellent snorkelling. It's great praise to be compared so favourably on that aspect and we will be sure to pass on your comments to our kids club girls as they will really appreciate your praise. Your review has highlighted a number of areas which we are planning on improving this year. By May we will have our new purpose built kids club operational and this will be a real enhancement to the guest experience. Our Villas are being rebuilt and refurbished and this is due to commence shortly. We are also working on addressing the spa too. As our menu changes often we will pass along your comments which are invaluable in maintaining our high standards. Our entire menu is included in our rates with no extra charges for meals in the restaurant so we trust there wasn't any confusion during your time with us. All the best and we hope to welcome you and your family back to Vomo to see our improvements. Vx

We spent 8 nights at Vomo with our 2 young boys and all we can say is WOW. It was our 5 th time to Fiji and first time at Vomo and it was better than we could have hoped for. Everything either met or exceeded our expectations. The photos don't do the place justice.
Kids club was out of this world, it was the first holiday where we didn't have to bribe our kids to go, they were begging us every day! It was so large with so many different play areas and experiences, but not overwhelmed with too many kids.
The new adults pool area is truly outstanding.
The beach is clear blue water and lovely white sand. A bit hard to swim in at low tide but otherwise beautiful.
The food offerings are excellent and kids are very well catered for with plenty of different options, and dietary requirements are dealt with very well even for kids.
But the best thing hands down was how peaceful and tranquil the island is. Even though it was at near full capacity it was never busy, most of the time at the beach and the pool it felt like you had the place to yourself.
Justin and his team do such a great job of making you feel welcome and attending to anything you need.
My one piece of advice is if you can afford it, just go! We're already saving for our next visit. Thank you Justin and team for a truly wonderful holiday of a lifetime. It is so nice to know that we have now found the perfect place to escape to when we need a relaxing break. Vinaka and see you soon!

This was a premier luxury resort - not anymore. Let’s say that just a 35 minute boat ride from the Sofitel and Raddison at Port Denarau there is now an island sharing the same; pack them in, feed um cheap (charge like a bull) philosophy.
What was once a fairly exclusive island retreat is now arguably a ‘family getaway’ destination; on this last trip I counted 24 kids in the main pool, all under 10.
Things change. VOMO has transformed.
Now boasting large concrete residential homes, built like big luxury sheds on the northern fringes, for dozens of people, the island (which is not big) can hold over a hundred guests. My last visit we would see only 40-50 other peaceful holiday makers, lovers and quiet small families..
The management is all ex Accor Hotels, and that Novotel feeling has arrived, and I can’t see it going anywhere, it’s just progress I guess.. I was a guest, nothing more, with a team focussed on the churn of numbers; no good bye from the GM and no reason to ever go back.

I’m on the hunt for my new island retreat, this place is no longer for me.
But, if your a family with 2-4 kids, it is probably a perfect island holiday… so give it a go. It’s still an amazing location and the Fijian staff are excellent.

It’s clear my expectations hadn’t changed after about 20 visits pre lockdowns, but the place has, dramatically.

Families with screaming kids - yes.
Executive retreat or honeymoon - NO

Response from Justin King, General Manager at Vomo Island Resort
Responded 11 Aug 2022
Dear 1999Sydney, Thank you for letting us know of your time on VOMO, although clearly I am indeed upset to hear of your comments. We are a small property that prides itself on delivering an exceptional experience every single time. If we have failed on this occasion I must apologize unreservedly. 1999Sydney your comments about the feel of the island is unsettling. To clarify, the resort has not changed its capacity in any way in more than 6 years. While it is true that we have built and launched a new residence, we have actively held back three villas from sale to ensure that the resort is not at any time feeling cramped. We still house exactly the same amount of people albeit in 25 resort style villas, and 5 residences. Our fully occupied resort generally holds 100- 110 guests at any one time, and this has not changed at all. Naturally as a family friendly resort there are a number of children over peak holiday times. What has changed is the addition of our adults only precinct and a greater choice when it comes to adults only dining through the week. The island itself has 6km of coast line, and 250 acres of land. I am therefore at a loss where the chaos that you described may have come from. I have sent you a personal message to encourage you to make contact with me so that I can better understand this as well as the sense that the property was any way Novotel like in nature. Despite your comment, I or our executive team have never worked in Accor properties with one exception of our Director of operations more than a decade ago. Instead we all have a distinguished pedigree in small luxury hotels so I am keen to understand where this feeling may have come from. We maintain a great sense of pride in what we can accomplish on our small (but passionate) property. I am sorry that we got it wrong however we are determined to rebuild your faith in us. Again I would urge you to contact me directly so that I may help to understand how we can best do this. Yours sincerely Justin King

Let me start by saying that this resort is most definitely a family one and you could argue that Fiji is really a destination best suited to families with small children. We travelled with our son who is 16. I had falsely assumed if you had to pay double for a second Bure for more than one child, there would be a just few children who would be mostly occupied in kids club but I have to say this resort is teeming with kids (although to be fair it is school holiday season in Australia and NZ). This wouldn't normally be a problem except the pool here is not at all large and the noise levels from children with their draping, water sodden swim nappies crying or shouting 'marco' 'polo' spoil the vibe in what can only be described as nothing short of island paradise. Fortunately for us the fabulous General Manager, Jacques suggested a quiet spot over the other side of the island where we could kick back and soak in the absolute serenity (albeit without bar service and comfy lounge chairs). The natural beauty of this place is staggering and If they added a pool to the adult-only Rocks Bar I would say I would be back in a flash. The rooms are really lovely, well-equipped and beautifully maintained and we enjoyed the view from the hillside villas and the free wash and fold service was brilliant. We also enjoyed the fact that there were no TVs and since the internet here is not up to more than basic surfing, it offers a great chance to disconnect. The food for us was mostly good but the fish was almost always overcooked and the salad often went under-dressed. They also really need to lift the standard, selection and freshness of the fruit at breakfast as to my mind that is one of the highlights an island experience. The drinks service also felt very slow but when staff did attend it was warm and genuine and always appreciated. Does anything beat a Fijian smile? And it is really lovely that it is all-inclusive (except for drinks and extras like spa treatments or beach picnics). In terms of activities, we really enjoyed snorkelling, stand-up paddle boarding, sailing and the spa is simply excellent and good value for money which is so rare on an island. The Thai massage was sublime. Thank-you Aum! There was a good range of activities here but I personally would have loved to see yoga added to the list although there is a challenging mountain walk for those who need a daily cardio fix. I would not hesitate for one second recommending this resort to families - indeed we met one family who had been back 9 times - just don't expect beautifully manicured gardens like you expect see at premium Asian Resorts, this island was obviously very badly damaged by the February cyclone and I would say it will take at least a year if not three for the removal of all the construction material and for the gardens and palm trees to grow back properly. Presently there is yellow tape around the tennis court as there is no fencing around it. I'd like to finish by saying that the Fiiian music will always keep lulling me back to the islands, but unless Vomo gets another pool, next time we'll be looking for an adults only resort.

Response from Karen M, Director of Sales at Vomo Island Resort
Responded 3 Oct 2016
Hi Suzy B, thanks for your detailed review. It was indeed Australian and NZ School holidays when you visited and we most definitely do attract families year round to VOMO, so you will probably always find we have children here. We've planted a lot of new gardens and these are still in their growth period, however vegetation grows a lot more quickly in the tropics. VOMO is a relatively dry island, not seeing the same rainfall that is found on the mainland or in other island regions of Fiji such as up north, so the vegetation is naturally more sparse than densely tropical. We take on board all your comments and thank you for your constructive feedback. Hope to see you back on VOMO again. regards The Vomo family

Also. Access from the float plane or boat to shore needs a thought as they run up on the beach and you step off. Or you can take a helicopter.

Bula We will be commencing the build of a new adults only pool in 2018. The date for this has not been finalised as yet. Meanwhile, there is the main resort pool by the Reef Restaurant and Vuda Bar and of course, over 4 miles of white sand beaches to explore that surround the island. We can also take you over to the secluded beach on little Vomo for a picnic at just F$150 pp and you get the entire island to yourselves for half a day - a must do excursion. See you in April! Vinaka.
