Gate permanently closed but staff always available to let us in. Parking was across the street in a locked lot and staff were great about letting us in to park and retrieve car. We were the only guests staying at the hotel and we were given the top floor room with drop dead views of the city and water. Bed comfortable and clean but decor dated and tired.
Breakfast was continental, we were not offered eggs.
Worst part of our stay - and it is not fair to blame hotel - but it certainly affected our sleep, was the neighboring barking dogs at night! Wakened us at least twice each night.
Swimming pool was not open and we were told the hot tub would take 3 hours to heat so we used neither.
No restaurants within easy walking distance but we had the best empanadas at Pecos, an unassuming bakery between the hotel and Neruda’s home, which was well worth the visit. Our room had a safe that was not attached to the wall but I felt we had nothing to worry about. On our last morning we had to leave early and they had continental breakfast for us at 6:30 am.

The quiet , clean and spacious room was much appreciated after our Panama crossing cruise . The staff was extremely helpful and friendly . Also the breakfast was diversified with local products. Coffee and tee unlimited 24/7.

The location of this hotel is a bit of a problem now that it doesn't have a restaurant as there is nowhere within easy walking distance to get a meal. Valparaiso is extremely hilly and although the walk down to the more touristy area takes about 15 minutes, walking back would be a bit of a struggle in the heat and, as we had heard lots of travellers complaints about being mugged in Valpo, not advisable after dark. Taxis proved fairly expensive at £10 each way (including tip).
Our room was small and in dire need of an update with cracked tiles in the bathroom very shabby towels and a small safe that wasn't fixed to anything! It is also very awkward getting 23kg cases up the twisting stairs. The pool looked very unenticing when we arrived but after a clean it looked much better. The staff are very helpful; the breakfast is good and the terrace gives a superb view over town towards the sea. Pablo Neruda's house is a 10 minute, flat walk away.

In summary a very nice place to stay for 2-4 days.

We booked our stay for the new year fireworks on the coast of Chile very late due to being so busy. There was very little available and what there was had poor reviews. So we were happy one day when seemingly a cancellation occurred at the Alto Mirador so we booked from 27 Dec to 5 January. We later regretted not booking until just 1st January and then booking somewhere on the beach further north for the remainder. But hey-ho.

This is a hotel that will not wow you too much upon arrival. The word "Boutique" is used somewhat liberally for smaller hotels these days and it is often hard to pin down a definition of what this should mean in terms of expectations. We arrived very late at night (past midnight) and were delighted that a night receptionist was there to receive us. They have a fairly strict policy of keeping the front metal door to the street closed but they always have someone on reception 24 hours to come and open it.

The hotel grew on us as the days went by. It is quite a practical place to stay if you have a small baby as we did (11 month old). They put us in room 5 on the ground floor, which is right next to the breakfast/dining room, which has a kettle for boiling water. They were always happy to microwave baby food for us and use it to sterilise our bottles. It's such a small hotel that everything is just a very short walk away, handy if you have a baby.

Room 5 has a practical layout if you are a couple with a baby. They provided a baby cot that just about handled our 12kg baby and it sits right next to the bathroom so very convenient. The view from the room was ok, though we think views from similarly situated rooms upstairs must have better views. The terrace on the floor above has a great view.

Other real positives were:
The breakfast - I am a breakfast enthusiast and it's one of the things I always look hard for in a hotel choice. What I liked was their approach of doing a small number of things well with high quality, versus the mistake too many hotels make of trying to offer everything but with a lower quality. Each morning there was a lovely fruit plate of fresh fruit, very nice scrambled eggs delivered on request, bread for toast, yoghurts, and some cheeses and hams. A few things differed each day, which provided some nice variety. By the time we left, we had perfected the technique of asking for the scrambled eggs at the optimal moment once we had eaten our fruit and just about made the toast that we wanted to put the eggs on that they served! (Another breakfast bug bear of mine is hotels that deliver everything all at once)
Very friendly service - all of the staff made the effort to help with things and were always asking if there was anything more they could do. A very hard-working guy helped by parking our hire car in their parking spot nearby and diligently cleaned the swimming pool each day. That said we didnt use the swimming pool as it didnt seem so great.

All in all a nice place to base yourselves in Valpo for a few days and chill out using the terrace to read a book.

The Alto Mirador is a very nice, small hotel with extremely friendly and supportive service. The rooms are individually designed and the view from the terrace is absolutely fantastic. Only, if more rooms are kept, the breakfast room is a bit too small and it is not possible to get early breakfast. However, you will love it. Particularly the small meeting room with open fire and bar is very charming!
