I loved this place. Was traveling with Gate 1 Travel and they booked us here for one night. I wish we could have stayed longer. It was what I thought Africa would be. It was out in the bush. Loved the rooms and the showers we're quite unique. Dirt paths leading to your room screened windows and they have canvas flaps that they put down at night. We ate outside at nights with lanterns for our lights and they built a fire in the fireplace. The food was excellent. And our hosts went above and beyond making us feel welcome. The setting is beautiful, the Malewa River, lots of trees, monkeys, and a warthog grazing in the evening. Also, I must mention George our guide, who took us on an amazing nature walk. All in all I loved this place and would love to return some day.
We had a great weekend at this eco friendly lodge. The rooms are huge and well serviced. Very friendly management and staff who took care of us. Wake up to the singing of birds and the sound of the river. With no mobile connectivity or in room entertainment like tv, this is the perfect honeymoon destination... The food is good though can be better. All rooms face the Malewa River. Mine had a bathtub on the deck. Game drives are available if the weather permits. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to run away from the every day hustle and bustle. Wi-Fi is available only in the dining / reception area
This lodge was my favorite accomodation during our 8 day Kenya Safari with Gate 1. The staff was friendly and attentive and the meals were excellent. Our room was a river suite and we LOVED it! Peter took us on a nature walk and did a fantastic job of explaining medicinal plants and guiding us through the incredible scenery. The night time game drive was also exciting as we got to see a den of Hyenas with several babies that came right up to the vehicle! I would highly recommend this lodge and only wish we could have stayed here longer.
While on a Gate 1 Kenyan Safari adventure we had the pleasure of staying at the Malewa Wildlife Lodge for one night, I wish it would have been more. The property is in the preserve and there are no fences, so it is not uncommon to have wildlife roaming around the grounds. If one needs to leave their cabin after dark you walk out the door and wave the provided flashlight/torch and an escort will come to you and escort you anywhere you need to go. Each room is an individual isolated cabin, offering ultra privacy. The cabins are rustic yet elegant. The staff were extremely friendly and the service was awesome. We went on a walking safari and learned a lot of the fauna and flora from a very knowledgeable guide. Later in the evening we went on a night safari in a safari vehicle. Plenty of wild life to see and photograph. I got some amazing photos both during the day and the night drive. The food was excellent and the Tusker beer was cold! Our cabin was huge and had a king sized bed, wrap around porch, a crows foot bathtub on the porch and a wonderful view of the Malewa River. There are no modern conveniences like television, telephone, or internet, however they are not missed while staying here. The hot water bottles under the covers at night was a pleasant surprise. Also, Maasai Mara is very eco-friendly. Another pleasant surprise was during dinner, they had posted that dessert was Chef's Surprise, the lights where dimmed and the staff came out singing happy birthday to my wife in Swahili, and they had a cake wishing her a happy birthday and us a happy anniversary, as we were celebrating both. I had casually mentioned it to my Gate 1 rep when I booked the trip. Gate 1 took care of all the bookings and logistics and everything worked out smoothly with no snafus. This wasn't a trip it was an amazing adventure. Thanks Gate 1.
I really do not want to give this little place a bad review as we had a wonderful time there but anyone who is thinking of booking there does not to be aware of a few things.
Accommodaton is either in huts or in river suites. We were first put in a hut but did not want to stay there. It was a sunny day but the rooms were cold, dark and there is no outdoor space with the room. We then moved to the river suite. At least they were light and there was a balcony to sit out on. However also that room is quite cold and needs a bit of TLC: paint is peeling off the walls, the shower is showing its age. The room was massive but not cosy, no nice soft furnishings.
The main area
Similar to the rooms, the main area needs sprucing up with nice soft furnishings, a library and a nice outdoor seating area where you could relax in the afternoon in the sun.
I know they want to be eco and all that but they can make the area in front of the lodge a bit more genteel.
The food is failry basic but nice
Martin is simply wonderful and will do anything to make your stay more pleasant
Hardly recommended. We even saw a leopard!
All in all as said, we had a great time thanks to Martin, George and the wonderful night drives and bush walks. However we felt a bit miserable with the room and the main area. It was just not cosy and welcoming. Someone needs to give the place a massive overhaul
