At this stage on our holiday, we had been on the go for a bit, and needed some relaxation time. This motel certainly provided that as we had booked the King Spa studio.

Initially I had thought that it was the bed which was a King Size Bed, and the spa would just be a bath with jets.

Well, it was a bath with jets, but it was one of those huge corner baths. Truly was a blessing for sore muscles.

The motel was located slightly away from the centre of the town, on the edge of the lake. There was a walking track from opposite the motel, down to the lake, but unfortunately we never got around to walking it.

The managers onsite were very friendly, and assisted us with our plans for driving the Milford Road, explaining where the best places were to stop. There was also an onsite laundry for fairly cheap which was nice since we didn’t have to then travel to the Laundromat.

The room was quite large, with a sizable kitchen, television and closet. The bed was slightly harder than I would have liked, but that may have had to something to do with the fact that I was quite sore already from all the hiking I’d done.

All up, very happy, great little motel, and would recommend it to anyone. Particularly if you like baths, spend the extra moola and get the King Spa Studio!!!

We were booked into a one bedroom unit, however when we arrived we were told there wasn't any available. So we got the disabled room. I'm not sure how someone in a wheel chair would get around in this room as it was poorly designed with no space and definitely no room in the kitchen area for a disabled person let alone my husband and myself. Not all the sockets in the power board worked and the soap holder wouldn't stay up right in the shower. Water from the shower covers nearly the whole floor in the bathroom and there is no shelving at the basin for anything. The bed was well lets just not go there. Very old place that has had the carpet replaced recently but no other general maintenance. Such a shame.

The Anchorage is located one street back from the lake. It is an older motel which seems to be the norm in Te Anau. Although the room was generally quite clean, I noticed some areas that were missed -- a couple of hairs in the sink, and dust in the kitchen. The public areas of the motel -- walkways and reception area -- needed a good sweeping and vacuuming.
The kitchen was well-equipped and the wifi and TV worked well -- appreciated after a windy day on Doubtful Sound! The motel staff were all friendly and helpful.

Thank you for your review. We have used your review for further staff training and to remind the cleaning staff about these issues. They were also not happy that you found a couple of areas that needed attention and take pride in their work.

Our party of four stayed three nights in this well located and friendly motel. The two bedroom chalet offered acceptable quality fittings and comfortable accommodation whilst equipment, parking and furniture were all very good . The management and cleaning staff were excellent, helpful , friendly and efficient. The motel has a good choice of free DVDs, extensive literature about local attactions and good laundry facilities. It is a Golden Chain motel so guests should get a loyalty card for 10% off rates. The location of this motel is very good, being just a few minutes walk from the lake itself. The lake features a very extensive Information Centre, with lots to take the interest on a wet day. Continuing past there is an enjoyable lakeside walk leading to the famous Kepler Trail. Te Anau is a great base from which to explore Fjordland and Milford Sound in particular. From here you have the advantage of being much nearer to the fjords than Queenstown so the opportunity to be flexible with trips there (and beat the weather) is much better.

Interesting, most of the hotels on the street start with an "a" this one included. We were here for three nights as a base of operations to visit both the Milford and Doubtful sounds. Room was clean. You park right in front of your door, partly roofed so dry. Good wifi. We had our travel agent book this place and had a unit with a kitchen, as we could then go to the food store and prepare it at the room.

Thanks for your review. All the motel business in Te Anau have been around a while and when they were named, paper directories were the only way a motel could be found - pre-internet days hence everyone wanted to be first in the directory and named their business with a name starting with A.... Just a bit of history. We hope you enjoyed your NZ holiday.

Yes! All the apartments have 4-ring stovetops, fridges, sinks, cutlery, crockery and adequate kitchen tools. We cooked several meals from scratch while we were there. There is a supermarket about a kilometer away, so you can buy your ingredients easily.
