Our pre-booked accommodation with an AirBnB at Irvine Road, Cove was cancelled with short notice due to the owners concerns about Covid-19 leaving us with little opportunity to get an alternative place to stay. Fortunately after some quick research we discovered this motel (and were provided with a refund promptly by AirBnB).
We had stayed previously at Bluestone on George so were familiar with the area which is near the University of Otago. It’s over 20 minutes on foot to the Octagon area however there are plenty of fast food places nearby, we found the superb Bracken Restaurant within 15 minutes walking distance and there are easy links by car to get to Baldwin Street, the Railway Station and the Peninsula which were all on our “To Do List“. There is free parking onsite and although it may be a little tricky to manoeuvre if the place is at full capacity we were lucky and it wasn’t.
On arrival we followed instructions to cut through next door to 858 George Street Motel where our host Michael was manning the desk (he and fellow host Sally operate both places). Michael took us back across to Beechwood, organised check-in and gave us tips for getting to the Peninsula which we planned to do after dropping our bags.
The one-bedroom apartment was at ground level and was set-up for accessibility. It had clearly been renovated in recent times and was modern and spotlessly clean. We paid $257 per night for a 2 night stay.
There was a large lounge area with a well equipped kitchenette, a separate bedroom and an ensuite with a walk-in shower.
The lounge had a comfortable settee and chair, satellite television and a small table and chairs which was ideal for having breakfast. The kitchenette had a hob & oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher and was fully equipped with crockery, cutlery, glasses, etc. Although it would have been possible to self cater we dined out during our visit.
The bedroom had a comfortable king sized bed, and some wardrobe space and we found we slept well in what turned out to be a quiet location.
The ensuite was spacious with a large walk-in shower with good water pressure. An added feature here was the underfloor heating, ideal for avoiding cold feet.
The decoration and furnishings all had a contemporary look and were of a good quality.
Overall whilst we’d been looking forward to a staying in a stylish looking house on the road to the Peninsula, we ended up staying in stylish accommodation here instead. Covid-19 concerns prior to lockdown may have changed our plans but it turned out fine.
Both Michael & Sally were pleasant, informative and welcoming hosts. It is easy to recommend a stay.
