Perched just above the picture-perfect village of San Cassiano in the Alta Badia area of the Dolomites, the Hotel Fanes is a combination of Tyrolean charm and service excellence. The facility itself is gorgeous with stunning views of the Dolomites, two outdoor pools (one of which is 25m), an indoor pool and spa, a dining room with superb food, service and wine lists, indoor parking, and a friendly front desk staff knowledgeable in local hiking.
There is great hiking within a few kilometers drive and the Piz Segora lift is a few minutes walk across the street.
The meal plan provided us with breakfast, snacks from 1 to 4pm, and a five-course dinner. For those of us who are normally wary of hotel food, I can testify both the food and service were outstanding. We had communicated in advance to the hotel that we had some dietary restrictions. We were surprised that when we sat down to dine, the wait staff was fully informed of our needs and was ready to propose options to the regular menu where we felt that was necessary. Special thanks to Alessandra and the entire dining room staff for their friendly but very professional service. A side benefit is the Dolomites are as stunning as Switzerland or France, but less expensive in which to vacation.

We stayed here for two nights as part of a hiking trip. It's a delightful hotel with astounding views all around. Rooms are spacious; ours had a separate large sitting area with comfortable couches and an eating table and chairs! We had a canopy bed that was on an elevated platform. Bathroom was clean and spacious. We also had a small balcony. Opened the windows and doors at night to let cool air in (summer season). Meals at the restaurant were excellent, as was the breakfast buffet. The pools looked delightful, but we never had time to enjoy them. WiFi was dependable. The main part of town is a quick 10 minute walk downhill. Very pleasant staff.

We stay at the hotel for 3 nights. The hotel is very nice, the pool, the spa, the area and the food.
All was good till our last day. We plan to leave the hotel and drive to venice. The problem was that all the roads were closed due to biking competition. Nobody in the hotel told us before we leave the hotel about this. When we come back to the hotel to spend the 4 hours till the roads will open the staff dont even mind about us. They told us that they wrote about the closed roads in the notice board. I think that the minimal thing was to tell us about the closed road one day before or in the morning, that we know to leave the hotel before 9 am or after 3pm.

This is a really great resort in the lovely ski area of Alta Badia in South Tirol in Italy.

Rooms, service (in particular), wellness and food are all of excellent quality. The price level is high but nothing exceptional for a 4star superior hotel in this exclusive resort.

We booked late so only the larger rooms (mini suites ) were available. First we got a room on the first floor which was fine but had a very limited view. After one night we got another room on the second floor with better view and then we had nothing to complain about regarding the room. The cleaning was perfect and the room maids did a great job. The bathroom was large although we almost never used it because of the wellness area. Bathrobes, slippers and towels for wellness were available.

The service in the hotel is excellent everywhere. It is large so do not expect that the staff know you by the name (which I in fact find unnecessary). You will neither learn to know the owner family which can be nice but which is also not necessary. Otherwise you will expect a friendly, attentive, helpful and discreet service everywhere: reception, bar, restaurant, ski shuttle etc. The staff are all multilingual and understand and speak good english.

Food in general is fine. The day starts with a rich breakfast buffé supplemented by a breakfast a la carte menue which contains among other dishes the celebrated Egg Benedict. What you did not find on the buffé you could always ask for it, like fresh squeezed orange juice, and you got it promptly.

In the afternoon (starting at 4pm) there is cake buffet (and also some other dishes) in the bar area. Here you will find many hotel guests in their bathrobes passing on the way to the wellness area.

Dinner consisted of both an antipasto buffet as well as a cooked starter. It was followed by a "primo" which could be either ravioli, risotto or some other spagetti dish. The "secondo" is a choice between meat and fish. All were of high quality but I wish that some of the main courses could have had some more flavour. Now they were mild to the limit of being tasteless. Do not be so afraid of spices!

For dessert there were both a cooked dessert and a choice from the buffet.

We got good advice regarding vine. We had only wines from the South Tirol but for those wanting more internationally known wines there is a good selection from all Italian wine regions and also from outside Italy. They also had half bottles and wine by the glass.

We always looked forward to dinner every day in spite of our comment regarding flavours.

The hotel has a large wellness and fitness area. We never used the fitness area (tired after skiing) but used the wellness area every day. This has two parts, pool area and sauna area. There are two swimming pools, one indoor with an outdoor section and the new skypool. The later is unique. Here you can swim outdoors with splendid view of the surrounding alps. In fact this hotel is one of the very few which has an outdoor pool open in winter so it is an experience not to be missed.

I must admit that the sauna area made me a little disappointed. There is a very nice, but small, outdoor sauna with whirlpool where it twice daily are an aroma bath ceremony (aufguss in german). This was very popular and it was crowded every time I visited it. It needs an extension. The main sauna area I found dark and gloomy. There were a few saunas of different temperature and two steambath saunas. The "dresscode" is nudity as in all germanspeaking areas but no one cared about that but used the saunas wearing bathing suites. I think the hotel officially should claim the sauna area as being "clothing optional".

When it comes to ski service I must say that I have never experienced any better than this. You have your own skibox (room number at the front) where you can put skis, boots helmet and gloves in a heated areas so that everything is dry and warm for the following morning.

The main ski center is a few km away so the hotel has a very efficient shuttle service. We never waited mote than 5 minutes (often less than this) for a pick up, both from the hotel but also on the way back from the slopes to the hotel. The driver was very helpful with the skis. Again many thanks!

I should also mention the bar area with also has a very prompt and friendly service. I appreciated that we did not have to sign a paper for everything we ordered there or in the restaurant. If I should wish for an improvement is that they should serve South Tirol spumante by the glass which they don´t. Only Prosecco or Franciacorta which both are fine but they should herald the regional wines.

In all. Fanes is a luxury resort and it meets all the requirements you can have on such a hotel.

Ideal for a skiing holiday with regular mini bus to Piz Sorega lift which takes you to the lovely slopes above Corvara. Rooms comfortable. Pleasant pool complex with several relaxation areas and saunas. Excellent breakfast with freshly cooked options like Eggs Benedict. Evening meals made up of many small courses which suited me. Very pleasant, helpful staff.
