On our way from Franz Joseph Glacier to Abel Tasman, we decided to make a detour to the old slaughterhouse after seeing pictures of the place on the internet. We are so glad we went there, common area and bedroom were stunning, built in wood (by the owner!), with an amaizing view to the Tasman sea. The hosts were very nice and helpful, and they have such an interesting life story! The 10min climbing walk to arrive didn't bother us and David was there to take the luggages with the quad if needed. We stayed one night but we would have loved to stay more. One of the most beautiful and special places we saw, we definitely recommend it!

We spent one night in the twin room. It has great sea view. The guest house is on a hill, takes 20 mins to climb up but you will find it worth the climb. Very good place to spend one night doing nothing or read a book or watch a movie with your friends. And the host is very friendly. We like the house very much.

our second NZ trip and this one was one of our "must come back to`s".

It is a 10 minute Bushwalk up the Hill to come to this Place but as soon as you are there you will see…. it's absolutely worth it. The place has a 180° View of the Tasman Sea/Westcoast. The Common Room and the Kitchen are well equipped and both has this great view of the ocean. The rooms are basic but very clean and the beds are really comfy.
The best thing about this Place is the Host. David welcomes you with a smile and a cup of coffee/tea, is always there for a chat and gives you advise or recommendation for trips etc. He even helped us when we had problems with our car. One of the nicest persons we met here in NZ!

Definatly a must visit when you are on the South Island of NZ. Highly recommended!

Off the beaten path and the road with a nice walk in, off the grid with water power, family built and run, splendid facilities with an adorable couple running things. They were the best hosts, plus the dogs are gorgeous! I stared with my parents and one other person- they were extremely accommodating, moving a mattress into a room so we could all share one room which had a wonderful view of the ocean to wake up to. Love, love, love this place!

We like the small backpackers without a big TV room and only a few beds. Well, The Old Slaughterhouse is definitely one of e most outstanding backpackers fitting into that category. No TV, no internet, no infrastructure - but exactly that makes it a perfect place to unwind and have a rest. Its stunning location far up a steep hill on the west coast with a 180 degree view over the sea is just amazing. We have never met any other backpacker hosts with so much heart and friendlyness. Even the animals (2 big dogs, a cat and a randomly appearing NZ chicken) are so relaxed. Don't miss this spot when you are traveling via Westport - and plan at least 3 days for it! Thank you again, Dave, for your warm welcome!
