this place is advertised as a "farm stay" however, the reality is it more like a great boutique hotel

wonderful clean room and even better meals! Wines and bar akin to an international hotel

friendly and entertaining hosts. (without being overbearing or intruding)

many thanks David and Sue for a great stay!

We enjoyed 2 nights at Mairenui, staying in The Retreat on the occassion of our honeymoon. We loved the complete peace and quiet and privacy of this special house. The view from the bedroom was hard to pull ourselves away from. We also enjoyed a few hours down at the river with the private swimming holes. This is the perfect place to come when you only have a night or two to spare when you really want to be away for a week. 2 nights felt like we were away for a week, that's how relaxed it was!

First up – we can only highly recommend this wonderful farm and its owners to you. Mairenui epitomises a kiwi back to nature olde world country experience. Time has stood still, with rutted access drive, original farmhouse villa, the old stable, and back to basics living. Every aspect of our accommodation was imbued with the character of settler life. But don’t expect a glossy magazine style – this experience is genuine farm pragmatism, and close to untouched. But the icing to this is the attention to the visual: delightful flowers, old carts, wagon wheels, bikes and interior decor. When it comes to creature comforts, it’s there, but in the context of honest farm life.
Our hosts, while we stayed only one night as we passed through, were immediately generous and welcoming, relating the farm work of the day and introducing us to some of their adorable horses, lambs, dogs and chooks. Our villa was independent of the farmhouse itself, allowing us our own freedom to enjoy the surrounds.
The Rangitikei region offers a wonderful sense of remoteness; the farm itself offers breathtaking scenery. Breakfast was just perfect: fresh, plentiful and served in the hosts’ character laden, roomy dining room.
This retreat is perfect for young kids: our 2.5 year old was entranced from the moment we stepped on to the farm. The drive up to Mairenui is beautiful; the experience once there, delightful. I chanced finding Mairenui on the internet, and our ‘punt’ gave us rich reward!
The only thing we would have done differently was to be better prepared for a cold night. We should have put bedroom heating on, as the open fire wasn’t enough. The villa is a draughty old girl, but we certainly don’t hold that against her.

We stayed at Mairenui for a night, and we remember it fondly.

We were a couple, so we stayed in the suite attached to the main homestead where David & Sue live. The place is a huge farm, with horses, sheep, dogs, and gardens that they've maintained for decades, with care that reflects in the beautiful landscape.

We were treated with such warmth and hospitality, in such a beautiful place, with such friendly hosts, that we treasure the stay. Thanks David & Sue!

“The Retreat” @ Mairenui

Aptly named this country hideaway is found by turning east off State Highway #1 near to the stranded low-flying D3 cafe, as all Kiwi’s know we are in: Mangaweka.

Almost straight away one senses a slowing down of pace, giving way to local traffic from one end of a narrow timber decked, truss beamed bridge. Whilst one waits for the local’s Ute to pass, a glimpse is caught of the modern Italian built viaduct for the mainline rail track peering from around the curve in the river.
20 minutes drive further up the road one enters a glad of 800-year-old Kahikatea, (white pine trees), and discovers a rustic house, (designed by now deceased Architect John Comensky) viz: “The Retreat.”

Other reviewers have designed it as “hobbit” like, which indeed is appropriate…however there are many other charms to setting: native NZ pigeons swoop between the trunks, Tui chatter away to themselves as they feed. Grey Warblers flitter close above your head as you sit outside soak in the quietness.
The hilly landscape swings from a distant view of Mt. Ruapehu to the Ruahine Ranges to the east.
Within the house, there are all modern amenities: stove, fridge, even a dishwasher. (There is a TV but who needs it?) Limited mobile phone access makes for a rather nice prerequisite for such a Retreat, (walk down the drive phone in the air - like!)...

There is daybed in bay window – perfect for snuggling in with a glass of wine and a good book. The main bedroom upstairs has a large set of French doors, which open wide to the landscape.

But probably best of all, is the bath, (with loads of hot water), with a timber window shutter above, opening directly onto the bush and birdsong…just beckons you to lie back and saviour.
Lots of chopped firewood awaits, you use for the evening fires and would be puuuuurfect for winter evenings.
We must go back and enjoy the hosts Sue and David’s cooking feats, as they also have had “great raps” from other staying guests; (as an optional extra).
