We stayed at 1898 The Post for my partner's 30th birthday and we could not have had a better time. The whole team went above and beyond to make sure that it was a really special experience with loads of beautiful little touches, for which we are so grateful! Our room was fantastic - completely quiet and peaceful, very dark at night, with the most incredibly comfortable bed. We loved the style and decor of the hotel, and felt very safe due to the many coronavirus measures that the hotel installed. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay, we very highly recommend this hotel and all the team members who did such a great job!

Dear ella_in_belgium, How wonderful to read that you enjoyed your trip to Ghent and our beloved hotel! We certainly appreciate that you felt confident enough to travel in these changed times and it is great to read that this was enhanced by the measures we implemented in the hotel and The Cobbler, our cocktail bar. Belated birthday wishes for your partner and we hope to welcome you back on a future occasion! Best regards, Sven Steijvers General Manager

Having stayed at another Zannier hotel, we booked a trip to Ghent pretty much just to stay at this place. The hotel is well located for a tourist weekend, and relatively straightforward to get to via tram from the train station. However, we had a disturbed night's sleep as were unfortunate enough to have a room located close to the 'honesty bar': after the main bar closed this filled up and being situated in a turret the loud voices were amplified. A call to reception had no material impact. And, don't get me started on the stupid charges 'per half hour' for a late check out!

Dear AMCandFMC, Thank you for your candid feedback following your stay in Ghent last February. Like so many of us, the current situation gives us all time to catch up on outstanding tasks and it is wonderful to see your commiment of writing 12 reviews in one day about your travels the last few months. 1898 The Post is situated in the heart of the old city, adjacent to Korenmarkt Square and overlooking St.Nicholas Church - I whole heartedly agree, the best location possible for exploring our historic city! Our honesty bar is a quiet retreat (it only seats 4) for our hotel guests to read their own book, browse the wonderful array of picture books available or watch the world go by. At the same time they can help themselves from the premium spirits available and I regret this disturbed your evening rest. Our guests can check out till 12 o'clock (midday) - ample time to get another stroll in or grab a coffee some where! Next time, just leave your luggage at our front office to allow yourself just that bit of extra time to see the sights you missed the day before. Checking out at our dedicated time helps us to get the room ready for our next guests' arrival, who also want their room on time, just like we did for your arrival the previous day. Thank you for posting your review, stay safe, and come and see us again sometime soon! Warm regards, Sven Steijvers General Manager

The hotel was in a great location in Ghent with wonderful views of the church + water. The staff was very nice and the hotel room was beautiful. The room itself was a little small but the amenities (such as fresh ingredients for custom cocktails in the mini bar) were a special touch. Loved the Le Labo toiletries in the bathroom.

The hotel bar was beautiful with great cocktails and snacks. There was also an honest bar for hotel guests on the 2nd floor.

The hotel had such great charm that you felt like you were staying in a part of Ghent's history. I would highly recommend staying here!

A bit of a late review, but myself and my boyfriend loved our stay here so much I couldn't not write one. We stayed here from 23rd-27th December 2018. We booked the hotel as a Christmas treat, and we weren't dissapointed. We were in awe our whole stay, the hotel is AMAZING!!!

Getting there - we arrived at Brussels airport and got a train from there to 'Gent Sint Pieters' then from there walked outside of the station to the tram stop where we got the number 1 tram to Ghent Town centre, get off at stop 'Gent Korenmarkt perron 5', and it's a 2 minute walk to hotel. The total travel time was around 1hr 40mins, probably quicker in a cab, but we prefer to do try out local public transport rather than just hopping in a cab.

Location - Amazing, couldn't be more central. Right in the midst of the Christmas market, we could see the big wheel from our window.

Room itself - Amazing! As soon as we walked in the room we were in love, the decor and layout of the room were beautiful.

Hotel communal area - The hotel decor was amazing throughout, and the smell was delightful (must find out what they use!). They also had a nice spot where you could sit down and chill/ read, as it was Christmas when we stayed they had a massive Christmas tree there which made the area even better.

Staff - Very friendly and accomodating. It was my boyfriend's birthday on Christmas Day, I told them this in advance, and they kindly left a bottle of wine upon our arrival, we also got chocolates on Christmas Day :). On Christmas Day evening we went to the bar for a cocktail and the bartender gave us a shot free of charge when he found out it was my boyfriend's birthday. On one day of our stay it was very busy and we didn't get our room cleaned (which we didnt actually mind) but a lady who was head of cleaning there i believe was so apologetic and offered to give us a bottle of wine by ways of an apology (which we sadly couldn't accept as we were checking out and only had hand luggage).

Breakfast - Bit on the expensive side, but then all of Ghent was. I believe it cost around 25 Euros, my boyfriend had it on our last day, it did look tasty but as a vegan it wasn't worthwhile as I would've only been able to have toast and coffee.

I couldn't recommend this hotel enough, especially if you're considering booking around Christmas market time.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in a Letter Room in order to view the van Eyck exhibition and to visit the city. The location is simply perfect with wonderful views over the historic centre. The conversion from post office to hotel has been achieved with extra-ordinary attention to detail and superb craftsmanship; the sense of place has been remarkably well-preserved. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the room was exceptionally clean. The bed was large and very comfortable and the room was quiet, in spite of its location in the middle of a busy city. The breakfasts were great (but not the coffee).
However, we did have some particular criticisms whilst staying: because of the height of the original rooms, the bathroom had been inserted on a mezzanine above the bedroom space. The toilet is on the bedroom level, but has no wash hand basin, which requires 14 steps up and 14 down; when the kettle needs to be filled the same operation applies. There is no ventilator in the toilet.
We usually enjoy regular trips to the bar when staying in good hotels, but were unable on 3 occasions to gain entry as the Cobbler cocktail bar was full of townspeople (and very noisy). We did not even try on the fourth occasion.
Our limousine service both from and to Brussels airport was completely unable to find the hotel; it did not appear on their sat-navs, nor are there any signs outside the hotel to announce its location or entrance. We lost 45 minutes on arrival touring the city.
We enjoyed our visit to Ghent, but would not stay in this hotel again.

Dear gianlorenzo, Thank you for taking the time out to post your balanced comments about your stay in 1898 The Post. I particularly enjoyed reading your lovely comments about our team members! Just like yourself, we are in love with our interiour design as well as the superb restouration, now already 3 years ago. I am delighted that we share the same appreciation for these works. The Cobbler, our award winning cocktail bar, is a hub of activity each evening. The team appreciate your patience whilst they accommodate both guests from the hotel and from the local area. Certainly each evening has peak moments and perhaps an earlier visit will assist in securing a table or a space direct at the bar counter, should your time be limited. Our room types vary is space and layout due to the protected status of our historic building. Our website highlights each one with a description as well as a variety of pictures - just have a look through these for your next visit and I am confident there is a room type for your individual travel need. Thank you again for your post and we look forward welcoming you back in the near future! Warm regards, Sven Steijvers General Manager

I'm not sure where Suite 23 is located in the property. However, the rooms and hallways are pretty sound proof. I must point out that the front of the property faces the square. We were there in the winter, while the Christmas Market was going on, and noise was not an issue. The rear of the property faces the canal, not sure if that would be a consideration in the summer time. The hotel is lovely and well appointed.

Dear guest - there is indeed a lift from the reception floor to Suite 23's floor (2nd floor). It's view is partly over St. Michiels bridge and the Leie river. Kind regards, 1898 the Post

Dear guest, We have 6 suites in our hotel - Suite 2, Suite 18, Suite 23, the Loft, the Tower Suite & Suite 39 (junior suite) - each room is described in detail on our website, with a great number of pictures to give a good view of each individual suite. Suite 23 is a single floor suite, with no steps. From the train station, tram 1 brings you to Korenmarkt Square (opposite of the hotel) in 10 minutes. Single trip is EUR 3. A taxi is to the hotel is around EUR 10 for a single trip. I trust this helps - thank you to 294DavidT for the detailed answer as well - and we look forward welcoming you to the hotel. 1898 The Post
