We chose this BnB mainly for the price and location. We didn't expect five star amenities as the price we paid is quite lower as per market standards, but it didn't disappoint. We got what we paid for and more. The people at the "reception" were very warm and accommodating, special mention to Jessica, who allowed us to check-in at 10AM and even gave us special handmade Christmas gifts. If you want fluffy sheets, comfortable beds, excellent soundproofing and grand breakfast, then this BnB may not be for you. But if you just want a basic room with all-in basic amenities, a fairly acceptable breakfast, excellent customer service, great location at a fraction of a price, then I recommend you choose this BnB. Should i be given a chance to be back at Rome, I will choose this again.
The rooms were good, had basic amenities and air conditioned. Breakfast was provided inside the room and it has private bathrooms too, so overall very good for the price. The staff is also very friendly and helpful, they will provide you with inside guide and tips on visiting the sight-seeing spots.
First of all, the location is great, walking distance (5 min) to Saint Petro´s cathedral and to Vatican Museum. Easy to find hotel, I arrived to Termini station and from there I took the metro to the Ottaviano stop, Vía Ottaviano is just at the exit of the metro, and from there find number 43. It is a very safe area. I called a few hours before my arrival, because I was going to check in late (9pm), and Mary was very kind and she waited for me without any problem. Breakfast was fine, they prepare it the night before, fresh fruit and a croissant with marmalade with a box-orange juice. Coffee is from a machine. By metro or even walking you can access all Rome´s main attractions. The bathroom and room are quite nice, good to take a warm bath after all the walking! Mary has lovely daughters that helped me also to find an early (5:10am) shuttle to the airport, and they even printed for me my boarding passes. I would stay there again if I have the opportunity to go back to Rome.
So - I don't have anything really to compare it too. My review is based primarily on what we were looking for and other people's reviews. Here goes: In general, B&B rooms are notoriously small - however this one was fairly large and very clean. Small euro-style bathroom. Of course, buildings in Rome are old, so I wasn't expecting brand new, up to date decor, etc. Emily herself greeted us, making us feel very welcome. The main reason we chose this place was for the great price and only 5 (walking) minutes away from the Coliseum, Forum, etc. AND just around the corner from a main street full of sidewalk cafes and shops. There was also free WI-FI and cable TV (though I couldn't find any English channels...lol). If you've never traveled abroad, it may be disconcerting to you as many streets in European cities would be called alleys in USA, but it is quite normal. We felt very safe in this location. You have the option of just the room or for a bit more, have the breakfast, too. We did not get the breakfast, but chose to visit local pastry shops. I will say that we were short a few lightbulbs in the main room and bathroom. But I give this a Very Good rating because of location, cost, and cleanliness.
Rome was our second stop during our two-week honeymoon in Italy. We booked Maison Vaticana on Agoda.com for four nights and emailed the hostel one month beforehand that we would be arriving at 3pm, taking into possibility of train delays and getting lost trying to find the hostel. We were informed that "We are waiting you in our lovely b&b partner in via Ottaviano 43 at Ottaviano Holiday House".
A number of things went wrong when we arrived. Ottaviano 43 is a building comprising several apartments. The main door was closed and we did not know how to inform someone to open the door. Luckily there were always people going in and out of the building so we managed to enter. However, we weren't provided with the apartment number (nor did we know which floor the B&B was on) so we had to call Antonio who answered our emails. He told us we were too early (we arrived at 2:30pm) and had to wait for a lady to come and bring us to the B&B. We had to go out of the building, drag our luggages and settle ourselves at the nearest cafe. When 3pm came, using the same method as before, we entered the building but the lady was late! We had to make several phonecalls to make sure that someone was indeed on the way to collect us.
When the lady finally arrived at 3:20pm, she spoke in good English and was courteous but hardly apologetic for being late. We felt that the hostel caretaker should at least make sure they are at the B&B earlier than our said arrival time in case we are early. And then to our surprise, she checked us into Holiday House on level one in the building instead of Maison Vaticana. The lady informed us that Maison Vaticana had sent us there. We were really quite shocked because we had selected the hostel due to the good reviews and the facilities. And given that we had booked the hostel nearly two months beforehand, the hostel had had ample time to inform us if they needed to make alternative arrangements for our stay. We should have been told way beforehand so that we can decide if we still want to maintain our booking with Maison Vaticana or choose another hostel/ hotel. We had thought the email saying that they are waiting for us at Ottaviano Holiday House meant that someone will greet us at the hostel but will bring us to Maison Vaticana but hardly that we are supposed to check into the Holiday House! In the end, we had no choice but to accept the arrangement of staying in Ottaviano Holiday House.
Our booking was for a family room but we were given a double room (a check with the lady claimed that these two rooms are equivalent). The room was hardly adequate. It was getting a little colder at night in Rome and the room always felt a tad too chilly despite the heater having been switched on. The bathroom floor was leaking a little which I could resolve by placing a towel over it but the last straw for me was when the toilet bowl became choked on the second night. As the caretakers weren't always at the B&B, again we had to call Antonio the next morning to deal with the matter (this is becoming a really expensive affair since we are not using Italy simcard). When we returned in the afternoon from our visit at the Vatican City, a note was left for us saying that we are transferred to another room across the corridor for the remaining two nights. This room was much bigger than the previous (which I thought felt more like a family room) and the heater was working really well (confirming my guess that the heater in the previous room was not really working). The floor still leaks a little near the shower area but I think that's just a poor bathroom design than anything.
Breakfast was just a packet of juice, a coffee from the machine along the corridor and a small muffin (along with a couple of packets of biscuits) - nothing fantastic. Free Wifi is available but the signal was quite weak. Location-wise, the hostel was just located 5 min from the Vatican City and we literally walked all the way from our hostel through Castel Sant'Angelo to Piazza Navona.
Overall, the actual stay at the Holiday House was just adequate. The room was cleaned and made up everyday but the towels were not changed. Our main grouse was that Maison Vaticana was not able to manage our expectations and handle our request properly. For a couple on honeymoon, our experience at OHH really dampened our mood. We would not choose to go back to either hostels again if we were to revisit Rome.
