The cabins are located in an older style, weatherboard building, with each cabin sleeping up to five via bunks with one double lower bunk.
Unlike many cabins, these cabins have kitchen facilities in the room and bedding is provided, making this accommodation sort of somewhere between a traditional cabin and a motel, but considerably cheaper than motel prices. Even though the toilet and bathroom facilities are shared, they are in the same building, so even in the case of rain, there is no need to be exposed to the elements, as the metre or so from the cabin to the bathroom facilities is under cover of a verandah.
The bathrooms did smell a bit musty, but that may be related to the use of septic tanks, and the age of the buildings, but the cabins themselves were fine and nice and cozy.
Ashley Gorge itself offers beautiful park-like surroundings with playgrounds and bush walks. There were quite a few spring flowers out in different places too.
During summer, the site is packed with campers as the river is popular for swimming, but in spring we were fortunate to have the place almost to ourselves over the course of a week.
There are relatively few budget accommodation options near Oxford, and this is quite possibly the best value if you can get it, but there are only four cabins, so if you're planning on staying over summer it can pay to book well in advance.
The hosts were helpful and friendly.

We booked one of the 4 pet friendly powered sites as it was our first time camping with our large dog. The designated area is fantastic! Loads of room (great if you have a larger dog) and with the river just a short 4 minute walk away it's perfect for water crazy pooches! We were fully self contained, however the amenities were always clean and well looked after and the owners super friendly and helpful. Great location close to some awesome bush/forest walks as well.

Rusty water was coming out of the taps including the shower-YUK.
Most sites were un usable due to them being to wet and waterlogged, even the dining room was flooded and the facilities looked old, tired and in some areas rotten. Friends in one of the cabins complained they were cold as the heating was insufficient & the noise from the people in the cabin next to them could be heard all night. Sorry but we won't be back again.

This was to be our last Campervan stop in South Island, and we really chose well - there was plenty of room to park and it didn't feel at all crowded. There is a nice walk down the gorge to the river and up through the trees where we found the 3 huge Sequoias. The facilities are good and you can get basic supplies from the site shop.

So glad your last night in the South Island was with us. Its a beautiful time of year to visit the park & reserve. The stags are also beginning to roar at night down at the river, each new season here we are experiencing new sights and sounds. Hope the rest of your trip was just as enjoyable. Kind Regards Sally
