This hotel is right around the corner from Notre Dame, which is an excellent location! It was a perfect walk all around the city and not too far from the subway. Definitely in an ideal location. We somehow managed to snag a super good deal, so our room was cheap and it was very cute. We had a little table and chairs, our own bathroom, an armoire, a TV, and a full-size bed. The bed wasn't very comfortable (it was very hard), but otherwise the place was great. It was warm enough when we got home to get out of the freezing February weather, and that's the important thing! Since we went for Valentine's Day, it was nice that the room was cute and romantic. Breakfast was served in the Mexican restaurant below the auberge. It was very basic, some bread and juice. We didn't eat at the restaurant during normal hours, though. When we checked out, there was no one at the desk (in a small room), so we stuck the keys under the door. We also couldn't find anyone to ask questions most of the time, and the payphone by the check in area didn't work.
While the staff does work hard, I found the place to be extremely expensive for what it has to offer. The room was only cleaned before I checked in. Every day I had to empty my trash bin and make the bed (I don't know if this is a standard for hostels in Montreal). Rooms had a good size, and bathrooms were good. Watch out for the free triglyceride increasing breakfast which comprises one croissant, half a muffin and a glass of juice, no fruit. Wifi does not reach the rooms.
Very affordable and nice place. I lived in a room with two double beds which was very spacious and clean with private bathroom. The atmosphere was good and the location was extremely good. The only thing one could complain about is that the breakfast was not the best.
The hotel is close to everything. Subway station, tourists spots in the old port, restaurants etc. The room is big enough, very charming interior with a big high Def TV with cable channels. When we go back
To Montreal we will stay to this hotel again and request the same room.
Casa de Mateo is around the corner from Rue St-Paul and all the Old Port restaurants. Rooms are small and not very nice. My door wouldn't lock. Shared baths not well kept, puddles of water in the morning.
When I checked in I had to wait about an hour while the owners looked for the room key.
This place is very cheap but still not worth it.
